EA82 SPFI surging problem....gone!
GeneralDisorder replied to Erik R's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Partsman - go to B&R auto wrecking. In Eugene. You will almost certainly find what you need. GD -
Knock knock knockin on Billy C's door?
GeneralDisorder replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would certainly be interested in buying some stuff for the benifit of the USMB. But if Paul does it..... he has to promise to ship the stuff within say..... a month. LOL. GD -
That's all well and good, but the real question is what are the differences between a DL and a DL-5? LOL. A lot of the things you guys mentioned are EA82 specific. GL-10's did exist in the EA81's as well. Also, it should be mentioned that every single option that was availible for a GL-10, could also be put on a GL. My 84 wagon was just a GL, but had A/C, cruise, PW, Digi-dash, center arm rest etc..... all options associated with the GL-10. So the real differences depend entirely on *which* GL your talking about. It could mean a ton of differences, or it actually could mean nothing at all. I think I heard one time that if you priced it all out, you could actually end up with a more expensive, more decked out GL if you ordered all the options, than what a GL-10 would have been..... GD

"This is my couisin Guido.... he likes kneecaps." LOL. GD -
You got lucky - believe me. My point is that you won't find one HERE for that price. Because people on here know what they are worth. If you find one for that low of a price, then the owner is either really desperate, or not very knowledgeble. And if any board members find one for that price, they are gonna snatch it up, and resell it. Or keep it. GD

Anything you get for $1,000 in your area will be awful rusty I'm afraid, or massively beat up. They are commanding a price now - in good shape - $3,000 - sometimes more. Keep looking tho. Out here in Subaru country, a Brat is a rare find under $1,000. GD

Somebody Save this car
GeneralDisorder replied to LegacyT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe in that part of the country it's worth something - here it's not worth jack really. We have tons of them that look better than that one..... you can pick em up for pennies already running. GD -
Remove the air filter - look down in the carb - if it's a 2 barrel, then it's a hitachi, if it's a single barrel, then is the Carter/Weber. Both suck about as much - but the Hitachi isn't as gutless, and has the added benifit that it's manifold is compatible with the 32/36 DGEV Weber..... GD

Here's mine - the camera doesn't really do it justice, but you get the idea: http://usmb.net/gallery/GeneralDisorders-Subaru-Pictures There at the bottom of the page. GD -
Anyway to remove the clutter on engine?
GeneralDisorder replied to colosuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes - it can pass just the emmissions test. The Webers are good at that. But if you have an under hood inspection, you will immediately fail regardless since the Weber is not street legal. GD -
The difference in RX and XT6 clutches.
GeneralDisorder replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
PM Qman - he's done it. He has an XT6 clutch with an EA82 flywheel on an EA81 mated to a D/R 5 speed. It's in his Brat, and went to the rubicon that way...... I'm sure he could tell you all about slippage if there is any. I've seen it in action - doesn't look like there's any problem to me. GD -
Yes - I second that. Water is a byproduct of gasoline combustion, and at times (especially when cold), there can be quite large quantities of it. I've seen if literally pour out of exhaust pipes when a car starts up a hill. This is also what contributes to the rusting out of mufflers and exhaust systems..... unfortunate, but completely normal. DOH! He was talking about the CAMshaft, not the CAMera! I'm stupid - sorry. GD -
Check that other fuel filter out. If that doesn't do it, I would take a look to see if the secondary barrel in the carb is opening as it should. You might not be getting both to open - the secondary is vacuum operated..... Check your throttle linkage, etc. Can you freespool the engine up past 3k? ie: not in gear? If you can, then it's not a fuel supply issue. After that - check compression in the cylinders - you might have a blown headgasket, or bad valve. Could cause the no power under load you describe. GD

4 to 5 sp. convertion
GeneralDisorder replied to SkankinPickle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No - they are too long, and do not fit in the knuckles. And there is no advantage anyway. GD -

GeneralDisorder replied to SkankinPickle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA81 axles will work as long as its not a turbo tranny. Mostly RX's and such had these, and they have a lower Lo range anyway. I think the 86 is the best year for D/R 5 speeds if I recall correctly. Best gear ratio's and such. GD -

Most newer digicams these days can do short video clips. My little canon elf can even do 20 seconds or so.... GD -
Brat Rear Belt Covers For Sale

I must say that I'm very impressed with the quality of the covers. As some on the board know - I'm very picky about such things. Ask him about reproduction shift boots as well...... Shift Boot GD -

What the ???? is this thing
GeneralDisorder replied to HardcoreSoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah - thats a condensor of some sort if I'm not mistaken. The one on my Brat was broken just like that - in fact - many of the ones I've seen are broken. The wire pulls out of the unit - it looks stripped when it does that. I didn't notice any adverse effects from not having one, but I replaced it when I located a good one at the JY. No difference with a good one. It just doesn't seem to have much effect either way. GD -
Need Dist Drive Gear from EA81
GeneralDisorder replied to colosuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Obsolete? That's BS - the EA81 is still made in other countries. They just don't want to get it for you. GD -
Anyway to remove the clutter on engine?
GeneralDisorder replied to colosuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The most common carb upgrade is a Weber 32/36 DGEV. Can't pass emmisions with it if you have an under-hood inspection tho. If you don't have to be inspected, then you can remove pretty much all of the vac stuff. You have to leave the disty vac advance, the brake booster, and anything relating to automatic trans, cruise control, etc. Electronics depend on what carb your car has. Some had feedback, and others did not. Generally - if it has an O2 sensor in the exhaust, then it's got the feedback carb, and anything you do to the system will piss off the computer. Replacing the carb is still fine, you just have to remove the computer to get rid of the dash light. GD -
