  1. So your saying it was a 1600 Turbo 5 speed methinks not, but I've been wrong before. GD
  2. Well - we used to be able to no problem, but recently they have been really tough about it - like not allowing them unless you have a signed note from a doctor, or have scheduled it months in advance for something like a wedding, or a funeral or other emergency. Also - my best friend is in my unit - and in my section, so if I went off-roading without him, he would be a little pissed - and if we BOTH tried to get out of drill, they would surely know something was up. GD
  3. No oil on the dispstick is nothing to worry about - after about 1.5 quarts they don't register any more, but likely there is a few quarts left, and as long as you didn't lose oil pressure, and it was running fine, then you probably didn't do any major damage. GD
  4. My wagon was a 2WD 5 speed, and it's just a GL...... so there goes that theory on the GL-5. Nice try tho. hehe GL-5 and GL-10 aren't that weird tho - have seen those, and they were sold here.... But what in the world is a GFT-5? It must stand for something - they don't just pick letters out of the air - the designer must have had some reason for picking that combination..... GD
  5. I was watching "God of Gamblers", and durring a shootout in a parking garage, there's a blue EA81 coupe, and there's a close-up of it's badge - it's a "1600 GFT-5" Anyone want to speculate on what that badging might mean? Maybe that's one of those dual carb 1600's? Just thought that was kinda cool. Never seen that before. Anyone else seen any weird badges like that? GD
  6. The Kit is about $325 if you look hard for a good deal. Think I paid about $350 - but there's no sales tax here, so I still got a good deal. GD
  7. Totally - just a pic of the wiring and the mount would be good enough for me. I can replicate it if I have an idea on the wireing. Doesn't seem that it would be too hard, as long as the alt is internally regulated like my 85 is. GD
  8. I put Redline MTL in my wagon's tranny - still grinds on the downshift into third - the difference between Redline and the crap that was in it is noticeable, albeit small. I will use Redline in all my manual trannies from now on because they are old, and I want the better gear protection. I discussed this with Mudrat79, and he said that of the 20 or so trannies that he's put Redline in, about half were corrected by the use of Redline, the rest still had a grind of some sort. Sometimes it helps - sometimes it doesn't, but at least your not putting some foreign fluid in it like ATF (not to say that this doesn't work - it just isn't comfortable for me). The Redline is what is supposed to go in there, it's just a high quality, and will sometimes help grinding issues, and prolong a tranny that really needs to be rebuilt GD
  9. Your correct - power locks were NOT an option on EA81's. My wagon has every option you could get - except 4WD - go figure. Course - it's got 4WD now..... GD
  10. Only quote I can remember from my DI was from a female..... very petite black woman when asked if we could leave post.... "Not no, but HELL no private!" She was actually pretty cool tho - just tough as nails. Not someone I would mess with..... GD
  11. Blue light is NOT better for visibility, and White is also not optimal. The Sun is more yellow, and your eyes were designed to see in that light. Study's have been done to this effect..... the blue and purple lights just look cool, nothing more. GD
  12. NO car on the planet? I find that hard to believe - I mean I like SVX's too, but that's crazy talk. I'll take a '77 Lotus Esprit Turbo (White of course) over one...... or a Lancia Stratos.... I could come up with a dozen more I'm sure. All of which are sure to turn more heads than an SVX. GD
  13. If you don't know about carbs...... install a Weber. Redline Weber sells a kit for your engine - kit number K730. I could help you install it if you like - much better low end torque, and way easier to tune. GD
  14. .........:madder: You are a bad man. Please sell it to me BEFORE hitting trees. I have a thing for Gen 1's and would be saddened to see antother needlessly destroyed. It's not like they make them still ya know..... Seriously - I will buy it. Might have to make payments to you, but I'm well known on the board for paying on time. GD
  15. Smack em..... just do it carefully. They are a press fit, and should be installed with a press.... but people have done it without. Not me - I usually get a good one from the JY, and toss it on. If'n I was to do it tho, I think that probably I would take it to a machine shop. It's hard enough getting the axle out and back in to have to bother with the bearings too. Make sure you pack em with grease very well, as they are difficult to repack later.... GD
  16. 79 Brat in Portland eh?? Just sell it to me, and your troubles will be over Black smoke..... could it be blue? White would be too rich, or burning coolant..... blue is oil. Black.... well - really dirty oil I'm thinking you have bigger probs than the carb. One easy solution would be to install a Weber - no more carb troubles then. GD
  17. Actually - it sounds like maybe a bad front wheel bearing. These can make awful noises - something like someone trying to drown a cat...... Could be an axle too - the on gas / off gas nature of it sounds suspicously like an axle. Really there is no one answer - it could be none of these. You'll just have to rip it apart and find out. GD
  18. She's right on the Ford PS whine - they make an awful racket. And they don't seem to have a problem with it. Seen em do that for 200k and not die. GD
  19. With only 110 HP, even if you modified the engine quite a bit, the problem is that with 28" tires, your gearing won't be right - I'm afraid it will never be fast. Maybe if you drop in an EJ engine. She means acceleration right? That's a tall order with 28" tires man. GD
  20. Matt's not THAT bad guys - he's got a bad rap because a couple people find him annoying - and everyone else just jumped on the bandwagon. I personally don't think he's that bad, just needs to work on the social skills a bit. I've met him on several occasions, and besides the whole Volvo thing, and a few odd personality flaws, I think he likes Subaru as much as any of us. He's young, as are most of the people in this thread (not you corky ), and he'll learn over time. Getting along with everyone is a *skill* - it has to be learned. I'm a pretty blunt guy, and that has put me in a few awkward situations in my life. I try to avoid that now if possible, and keep negative comments to myself if I can help it. It's a learning process, and it just takes some people longer than others. Oh - and welcome to the board Patti - your alight in my book - any woman that can put up with us Subaru nuts can't be that bad. And don't be so hard on Matt - be constructive, and help him learn what he's doing wrong. Either that, or beat him about the head and shoulders with a wrench. GD
  21. The carter fuel pumps are good - summit racing has em for like $59 As for an oil pump - I don't see any need for a high volume pump. And there's only one on that page that's $109 - same part number for both turbo and non turbo. You would do better to get a new SOA oil pump and gaskets, and an oil cooler. Keeping the oil cool will keep it denser and give you greater pressure. The stock oil pumps are fine if the block is in good shape, and the seals on the pump are good. GD
  22. The car I got all my 4WD parts from is still a daily driver for my good friend that I sold it too - has about 320,000 on it's EA81, and no sign of stopping. It's got lots of power too - runs better than my Brat that only has 129,000 GD
  23. 3rd gear syncro is dying - the only real fix is to rebuild the tranny, or to put in another. You can try Redline gear oil - it may help a little, but I wouldn't put any ATF in there - that's just asking for trouble. The lube is not the cause of your problem, syncro wear is the problem. GD
  24. Oh yeah - I can smoke my 28" MT's in 2WD from 1st gear. I even got a chirp going into 2nd the other day..... GD
