  1. I have an 01 Forester. While puttering underneath, I noticed it was not undercoated. I'm wondering if my body panels/undercarrage are galvanized? :cornfuzz: I'm wondering if I need to undercoat the thing or if it should hold up to the Salt in Salt Lake City! Anyone read a brochure or have any info on this? Thanks, Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming........:temper: 01 Forester, jealous............:madder:
  2. I don't feel so good...... Check the 10th digit of your vin! Starting in 1980 the 10th digit was an "A" and moves up the Alphabet each year. Your 87 should have an "H" in the 10th spot unless of course it's really an 86 in which case it would be a "G". I feel a little better now.........:-\ Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming........:temper: 01 Forester, jealous.............:madder:
  3. Does anyone know what year and what model diffs don't need any drilling. I have an 82 Hatch? I'm wondering if one year is easier than another year to swap. Thanks, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming.........:temper: 01 Forester, jealous............:madder:
  4. Have you thought about changing your vin number and using one of the available boots? :cornfuzz: Just a thought...... Sorry, Glenn, No wonder my projects never work right?
  5. My 82 Hatch did the same thing....... If I put my heater fan on high it blows the window out of the seal and I hear the wind noise as I'm driving....... I finally got in the habit of holding my window as I close the door..... and not running the heater over the 3rd speed..... I guess it's a moot point now...........since I removed my doors... For what it's worth, Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming......:temper: 01 Forester, jealous..........:madder:
  6. Your asking several questions and bringing up several points. I can tell you that by the time the brake lines exit the cabin and go out to the rear wheels they have already been mixed in the "Dual Diagonal Braking System". That's done up front. If you continue the line out each side to your wheels it will be the same as the factory. I have been told flaring is obnoxious. I decided to run pre-flared off the shelf lines to my rears. It seems to me if you could keep the flexible lines away from sharp edges and out of harms way they would be just the same. My .02 Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming--still without rear brake lines...:temper: 01 Forester, abs is great!...
  7. If I had 5 gears I'd tell you.:boohoo: But my Subie has only 4/dr:boohoo: I turn 3000 @ 55mph in 4th:boohoo: :boohoo: :boohoo: For what it's worth Glenn, 82 Hatch,........transforming...:temper: 01 Forester,....just plain fast!.
  8. Sounds like something to be proud of to me! Good Job! Sounds like you diving a true off-road capable vehicle! Glenn, 82 Hatch-well sort of,......transforming.....:temper: 01 Forester,..
  9. I don't want to hear all this whinning. What about those of us with D/R 4sp? Mine does 55mph at 3000:boohoo: My car has never been over 75 mph:boohoo: :boohoo: :boohoo: (74mph on her final on road run) At least you guys have a 5th gear:mad: Ok, I'm through whinning now. Glenn, 82 Hatch, slowbaru.....:boohoo: 01 Forester, fastbaru..
  10. Oil the :madder: out of the bolts before your attempt to crank them. Work the bolts back and forth before reseting your wrench and oil it again! Repete last step 500 times! In the rear, if you can see threads it is lowered. If you can just see the head of the bolt it's up!
  11. Subaru Called this their "Dual diagonal braking systems for safe, sure stopping." Aparently there are two separate braking systems, each with one power-assisted front disc brake and one diagonally opposite rear drum brake. Because each system serves as a back-up for the other, your Subaru has a reserve of stopping power. If that sounds a little like a Subaru advertisement it's because, I took it out of the 1983 brochure:brow: My .02 cents. Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous........:madder:
  12. This wouldn't be a "Squeeler?" would it? Check your brake pad depth????? You may just need pads????????? Look at your squeeler on your brake! My Trooper will make screeches/squeels when I steer to one side of the street and not going straight or breaking. Do some R&D on your brakes????? Good luck, Glenn, 88 Trooper...Squeeky
  13. It's called a Lift Kit (it's adjustable from 3" to 12" so far) Just kidding....... Do you have an owners manuel? It is covered in there.... It may be in the reference manuel on this site.:cornfuzz: If not you have two bolts at the base of your front struts springs. Crank these to compress the spring and it will lift your front. This is good for an inch, (if you can see an inch of space under your spring it's already been cranked up). You should have a rubber plug in you bed somewhere this should give you easy access to your rear adjustment nut. It's in the center of your trailing arm suspension bar. It's a 19mm and cranking this will torque your rear spring. This may also be done by a previous owner. Good luck! Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous........:madder:
  14. Matt, Help us out! What else does it do? Make Clicking noise on corners? Backing up? CV boots split? Where is the noise coming from? Those of us with Inquiring Minds want to know..... I'll go back to reading the National Inquirer now..... Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous......... :madder: My Camry has had broken CV boots for 2 1/2 years and I still have not fixed them. It dosen't make a sound......even on corners:cornfuzz:
  15. I attached my hitch to a bolt plate under the rear deck. It then was bolted to the bumper. The bumper mounts were reinforced with 1/4 steel inside the frame rails. Never had a problem. 82's didn't have a shock absorbed bumper so this all worked well. May work for a bumper/tow bar? Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming.....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous..........:madder:
  16. TacoTim, My 82 Hatch had an intermittant fuel pump problem too. It would just leave me stranded and then it would fix itself. I took it to Nate Wade Subaru and they attached a light bulb to test/diagnose the fuel pump system and were able to determine that I had an intermittant short. Replaced the pump and never had a problem since. I have a Trooper that ate SIX fuel pumps in TEN months! (Dealer paid for most of them) They finally figured out that the wires were corroded and causing a low volatage to the pump causing it to burn out. Are your wires corroded? Good luck, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming.....:temper: 01 Forester, Jealous.........:madder:
  17. That's how it should be done. Someone InScabulated (similar to installed) mine with large power tools.:boohoo: Glenn
  18. I have an 82 Hatch that I have had since........1982! It has had a clutch, front CV's, water pump, alternator and a fuel pump in 21 years!!!!!!!! Still runs great. I calculated my cost of ownership at $375 per YEAR!!!!!!!!!! (not per month) This would include purchase price:brow: That's why I got a Forester. (one water pump bypass hose $11) Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous.........:madder:
  19. Thanks! That's the way to go for wiring. Is your hitch just a plate bolted to the bumper like the picture on the link? The Forester is a wide (frame rail to frame rail) hitch with the receiver just peaking out in the center? Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming.......:temper: 01 Forester, jealous...........:madder:
  20. Should loose around a #1000 pounds over what the Hatch had. I'm hoping it will weigh in around #1300-1400. It will be a 4-5 seater conversion and will look closer to a Scorpion, than a Rhino, when I'm finished. http://www.scorpion4x4.com/ It will have aluminum panels in front middle and rear on the side. The top will have a built in cargo rack that will tie into the rear rollcage (I call it the Xterra look). The hood will be the classic Scorpion style. To start off, (this may change) I will be using two sets of tires, my stock mud and snow's (because they're still new) and some 26X12X12 ATV tires (these will be custom made). I'm not using bigger tires because our gear ratios are so high (I value climbing). BY LOOSING WEIGHT my relative horsepower and torque is increased--so is my clearance. ...... 11 inches down the center!!! 20 inches at the cockpit floor!!! I'll quit Quacking on now..... Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...... :temper: 01 Forester, jealous........:madder: Tons of Hatch body parts available soon.........!
  21. The latest spy photo was released today on the Subuggy. Intelligence analysts suggest it looks very near completion. However reports from undisclosed high ranking individuals say the Electrical, Fuel and Breaking systems have yet to be installed/completed. Officials are unclear on how to release two or more photos in one thread?:cornfuzz: Glenn, 82 Hatch, almost transformed......:temper: 01 Forester, jealous....................:madder:
  22. I thought it said it was rated for #350? Which would be the weight of two people in the back. This would make sense if the suspension is the same as the other models. Don't quote me on that! Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming:temper: 01 Forester, jealous :madder:
  23. My cable always breaks in the left hand turn lane--in traffic:banghead: Pop and your moving into the intersection! My poor starter motor:boohoo: I'm gettin so I can install a cable in 10 minutes:brow: ---comes from a lot of practice:mad: My clutch cable pin in the pedal area is so worn it has the profile of a snowman! Even the pedal pin hole is elongated!!:madder: I hate Subaru Clutch cables............. Ok, I'm done now.:brolleye: Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper: 01 Forester, jealous.......:madder:
  24. Wait a minute..... Isn't that the Taco Bell Dog in the passenger seat?:cornfuzz: I know for a fact he speaks english!:bday: Where did he get those rims anyway? Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous........:madder:
  25. Getting the bolts in is the tough part........ Haven't done the wiring harness yet. Question, Do they sell the "adapter" for the electrical seperately? At a reasonable price? Anyone purchased one seperatly? That would be sweet to plug in the wiring rather than cut and wire. Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming :temper: 01 Forester, with hitch:burnout:
