It was the dreaded rust issue that led me to put a new body on my old 82 Hatch. It's much happier now.

G'day to all subie freaks
Sweet82 replied to suby rebel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Some years are better than others, some Subies are better than others... The Subie in your avitar looks like a winner! All the old Subies up here rusted away years ago... May 2007 be the year of the Subie for you (and all of us too). Cheers, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Rhino from down under. 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester -
Went Off-roadin over the Holidays! Took some pics because I couldn't believe how well the SnoBuggy worked in 15" to 20" of snow. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13823&cat=500&ppuser=584 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13826&cat=500&ppuser=584 Went over snowmobile trails and got the strangest looks? Never did get stuck and I sure asked for it. Too much traction! The only problems I found were at the end of the trails I had to "bank-bash" zzzto get past the snowplow piles to get back on the roads. And some of the hill climbs sure sucked the power out of that old 1800 engine. With 26" tires in deep snow, hills climbs, sure make me wish I had more motor! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13824&cat=500&ppuser=584 SnoBuggy after a good flogging. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13825&cat=500&ppuser=584 SnoBuggy after a nice cold bath. I love my SnoBuggy:D Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--SnoBuggy! 84 GL Mad Max--Needs new plugs 01 Forester--Serious traction action

If the snow is deep enough to give your Soob a problem, I'm not sure you should be out in the first place? Chains should get you a little farther but... once the snow is DEEP, your not going anywhere in your Soob anyway. Once we start pushing snow, the end is in sight:eek: Ice is a different story...:-\ Chains would help on Ice. I'm in the mountains quite a bit but I don't have chains for my Subaru. I do have them for my Trooper. In a bad storm I'd take chains and the Trooper.

I Cant Get The Damn Wheel Off> Help Fast!
Sweet82 replied to NewDriverOlderRide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have never been able to get my wheels off my 01 Forester without a fight! I had it "re-tired" the other day and I watched the tire guy fight with it. I laughed! -
I think you have the "Dual Diagonal" braking system. Your front right is on the same line as your left rear... If you don't want the HH (I can't blame you) just disconnect it and let it be. You don't have to mess with the brakes at all, just remove the cable that goes from the clutch area to the master cyl. Go Sk'o Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--disconnected HH cable. 84 GL Mad Max--connected HH cable. 01 Forester--no HH.

When the chips are down, I dig. Ya, it sucks and ya it takes a long time and ya, it's messy but it's the only sure-fire way to get out and it cuts down on body damage.:-\ Good Friends come in real handy at times like this...

The short answer is yes. That would also be the long answer. so...the answer to your question is Yes. Pics in my gallery.

Great Pics! Time for a receiver winch?

Super Swampers are good but, I wouldn't go that big on a tire. I have a 205/75 14 on it now and that's about as big as I'd go. The only reason I got ones that big is to get the aggressive tread. Anything smaller has snow or all season tread. Your going to miss your gearing if you go too big on tires.:-\ The rims I have are custom made by a company out of Denver. If I remember right they are 9" wide. I think they ran $80/rim. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=4836&cat=500&perpage=12&sort=3&ppuser=584 The 6ply ATV tries were $50/. They are Dirt Devil XT's 26X12X12. They measure out to about a 25.5" tire. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=4968&cat=500&perpage=12&sort=3&ppuser=584 The winch I have is a 2000# one. I use a pulley to double me pulling effort. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=11586&cat=500&perpage=12&sort=3&ppuser=584 The space where it's located was originally designed for an 8000# winch http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=40764&CategoryName=&SubCategoryName= I ended up using this one because it was $39 on sale. http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=92860&CategoryName=&SubCategoryName= I have pulled myself up my front lawn but that's all I have used it for to this point. I maintain that the basic frame can be made in a couple weeks. It's the detail work that takes the time... Build away! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester.

Plans were most helpful. Well worth the money. I would have spent way more time trying to develop a frame and platform. The time and frustration you'll save by having plans is incalculable. However, there are changes that need to be made to the basic building plans. Your climbing ability is a function of your tire size! Simply put, the larger the tire the less climbing ability you'll have. No magic here. You will loose weight off your donor platform. This will help but it still won't allow you to run huge tires. I run a 26" tire and I would class the buggy as a trail rig. It's not a Moab Rock Crawler. If thats what you need don't start with a Subie. It's great in snow. I installed a lexan firewall. It allows me to keep the cab warm in the winter time and I can watch the wheels do their thing. If I was in Alaska, I'd make the heater a manditory option! I run the 1982 manual dual range tranny, no modifications. The rear end is locked (lincoln style). It will get a little squirrly down hill on solid ice, but other than that the setup works well.

Run a Sooobie on Water? ...
Sweet82 replied to Davalos's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What I saw burning in those balloons was alcohol. The color of the flame gives it away. What those guys were smoking was Dope. The invention itself gives that away. The car never did run good when they were messing with it. No Sale! -
I was just messin around on that last post. Don't you guys ever sleep? I'm never on board at night. I'm out in the "Monster Garage" creating FrankenSubarus! Yes I did make a RhinoBuggy. I modified the plans to make it fit my needs. I feel there is a certain "Artistic License" you get when you receive the instructions. In the words of Captain Jack Sparrow, I thought of the plans more as "guidelines":brow: I thought the plans were worth every penny. Saved me a ton of time measuring, designing, testing and developing.

Welcome, There are several board members who are from Israel too. This is the place be if you have a Subaru! I have not been able to ask a question that someone has not found the answer for. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL MadMax 01 Forester

82 was a particularly good year for D/R trannys that need to be made into off-road Buggies! What are your evil plans? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester

On the EA81's it's "C" clip and the pedals slip off... This allows access to the pin and clip that secure the cable.

Anyone still have an owners manual?

Here is a diagram. This may make more sense. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13634&cat=500 With the rear end locked and traction control up front your only limited by your power. Best $5 mod I've ever done. The park brake handle allows hands off driving because the brake lever can lock in any given position. This allows hand on steering wheels and gear shifters. You reposition the handle or release it when you want.
-
A picture is worth a thousand words. I can't get a pic at the moment.:-\ I used two subaru parts. The hand brake lever was one part and the adapter for the two brake cables to the hand brake lever was the other part. All parts purchased as one unit from the JY. I hooked the two cable adapters together on their inboard side. I hooked the cables to the adapter on the outboard side. The park brake levers pull from their normal position in the center of each cable adapter. You can't hook the cables directly to the hand brake lever or you'll loose your ability to adjust the tension on the cables. Eventually I'd like to fabricate an "L" shaped bracket and see if this will pull the cable straight without bending the brake cable or the adjusting bolt threads on the had lever. Until that time this configuration works. As I have it configured it pulls straight and does not want to bend any cables or tensioning rod/threads/levers. Does this make any sence? Glenn

I finally got a chance to play with my dual park brakes in the snow. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=6002&cat=500&size=medium What a sweet trick that is! I had to put it in 12" of snow, off-road, uphill, in two wheel drive to get it stopped/stuck. Then while spinning the wheels (not the ATV tires), I slowly lifted one park brake lever.... SWEET!!! I slowly began to move forward again as the spinning tire slowed and the stuck tire began to move again. This mod cost me $5. Best mod for the money in my book! I was amazed at how precise of control you can have over the wheels by doing this. It was not hard to operate, very simple to control. Had to tell someone. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--snowmobile. 84 GL Mad Max--leaves green spots in the snow? 01 Forester--better not leave green spots in the snow!

Where are the vin's located on the 66 bugs? I have heard the door pillar and the windshield dash area? I'm looking at one that has neither? Where else could I look for a vin? Thanks, Glenn
