  2. So you leave your car running for an hour or so while the other is charging? An invitation to theft. Also if someone isnt patient they can fry the thing. usually when you need a jump start you discover it when you have to be someplace. nipper
  3. I've been assuming its a 2.2, if it is its a quick fix, hence why i am against dumping the car. nipper
  4. the cig lighter things doesnt work, its a HUGE waste of money. At best that circuit is ten amps. ten amps wont even get the straters attention. I have a nice bridge for sale that i would throw in that lighter thing. nipper
  5. so you have no cold air coming from the AC? Did the mechanics put a set of gauges on the AC system? No mechanic is just going to give back a customers car with weak ac and say it is fine without further investigation. AC is one of the simpler things to diagnose, as there isnt much to go wrong. STick a refrgerator thermometer on the air outlet, and tell us how cold the air is and how warm the outside air is. Does your air move from floor to dash to defroster with the buttons? nipper
  6. The only time a module or alt gets blown up is when people connect to a running car (modern cars), and that was never in the procedures for jump starting a car. It doesnt pay to rush things. nipper
  7. Except in an endwrench article on timing belts it says that all the parts should be replaced together. But I mean why not fix the car? It takes time and money to buy another car. Not to mention you know your car's history. nipper
  8. Any particular reason why your giving up on this car? This was the mechanics fault, sadly, not the cars. nipper
  9. No. Connect the cars then start it up. If that doesnt work rev the engine to about 1800 RPM where the alt starts putting out power. You can start it with the car off, but if you have been trying a while you may need a jump start yourself. nipper
  10. I am not sure about the price but yes. That is the clutch RPM sensor thingy. What it does is check to make sure the AC compressor is spinning when it is on. This is to catch a seizing compressor so it doesnt snap the belt. I forgot that subarus use these, as its been a while since someone had a problem with one. nipper
  11. 5 passengers may be tight, especially 5 adults on long trips. The 200 lbs would be fine. nipper
  12. hehe i was one of those too with a 110 mile round trip commute. mine was a 1987 GL hatch. What killed that was rust, but since i always perfomed maint early, it ran like a champ till the very end. nipper
  13. On any car that you drive long distances in, the trick is to the schedualed maint sooner then later, that way you can catch problems before they break. You will be fine with a sooby then. nipper
  14. heheh i broks down in NV too, the ALT went, and there were none to be found in the entire state. I limped to the next "big" town. i may be wrong, but i am seeing 50% more. on the plus side you dont need them often. Parts are more of a maint issue and not a repair issue (meaning you wont need them ASAP). is there a AAA in canada? no matter what you get I would join it.
  15. Canada is a big place. We need to know where in canada. I love subarus, but if i lived in Nevada i would get a ford or a chevy for this reason, but being in NY the subaru is better. Also look up in your phone book under subaru, see how many dealers are around. Generally any good shop can service a subaru. Even the computers arent that hard to repair. the only down side is the parts are pricey, since they are not made in canada. nipper
  16. If it is running good, I would clean the pan, cheange the filter, and keep going. It may be just as said, leftover flakes. Better them in the pan and filter then in the bearings. nipper
  17. Replace the O2 sensor for crying out loud. 3 years? yes you could have done cat damage by now. When was the last time this car had a tuneup? nipper
  18. ALso check your engine grounds. You may have a bad ground wire. nipper
  19. You can test the crank position sensor with an analog multimeter. It should be the same strength on all peeks. We need to do the usual testing, move the aprk plug wires, check the plug etc. Is there continuity between the two coil towers? nipper
  20. Ah ok. Its summer, its august, my birthday is this week, so my brain is taking a vacation .... ooooooo shiney thing :-p:drunk: nipper
  21. www.endwrench.com Engine archives i remeber if something goes wrong with something else (egr maybe) there wil be no spark at #1 plug. Double check.
  22. Ya know... This is a OBDII Can-bus system. Meaning it uses a multiplexed communications bus under the hood (I think or uses it to some degree). Maybe some place in here lies the answer, but, considering i used to wire test cells for large equipment (bomb racks sonar systems mine sweepers)), its possible something very very very wierd is happening along those lines. Professionally speaking, i dont think there is enough RF energy from any of these components to cause this. Of course someone can just be screwing with you with the other key fob too nipper
  23. NEVER EVER EVER rely on those gauges from a DIY refill kit. they are crap. They get more people in trouble with thier AC system. Also to properly diagnose an AC system you need to read the low pressure, high pressure along with air temp. For those pressures you need the proper gauges. nipper
  24. I cant imagine anything do what is described here. nipper
