  1. Comparing a turbo to a N/A car is just silly, of course it is going to feel slow. nipper
  2. Thats how i got stuck with the cheap belt. When a belt breaks on a sunday afternoon you grab what you can get. And that is all they had. nipper
  3. Well while Blu was distracted getting his annual inspection (turn your headlights and cough please), i got into a 2010 outback. It was a short drive, and yes it was Blue. The car was a 2.5L CVT. Observations; Why does an auto have a hill holder? Tons of rear seat leg room. No folding up the rear seat bottom for a flat luggage floor. Very comfortable. Huge cargo area. The CVT will get you speeding tickets untill you get used to it. Mentally we all use the shift points to help judge our speed (think about it). NO shift points and the power just keeps coming. I was way over the posted speed limit before i knew it. Roof is taller then Blu's. If the imprezza can have 2 cup holders and a handbrake, why cant an Outback? Stereo is still sort of made for the car, but I am sure someone will come out with a kit. Ride is smooother then Blu's, but didnt feel wallowy. Steering is lighter then Blus at low speed (sometimes Blu's feels too heavy for me with the bad back). Blu has the same front realestate as a new imprezza, so the outback feels roomier. The car did not feel large or heavy, but then again i didnt throw it around like Blu. The more i looked at the 2010 the smaller it got ( i was staring at it for 10 minutes). Under the hood seemed more roomy for the 2.5, and the plugs look easy to get to. CVT would be quick to get used to. The dealer didnt have any 6 cylinders to drive, as he has been selling foresters like hotcakes and selling his 09 outbacks. He said in a few weeks he would get a steady Outback supply. Would i buy one? It would be between a 2010 and a Jeep. WOuld I replace Blu, only if he got fatally bent. Blu is paud for with only 60K on his engine, and 70K on his rebuilt AWD unit. The things I dont like about blu: With the back seat bottom flipped up can't recline the front seats. More front legroom Dashboard vents sometimes freeze me or bake me. Broken driver seat heaters (anyone have a procedure for r and r the heaters?). For all his miles he has only one or two rattles, and that wont get me to spend 27,000.00. I'm even thinking of getting him Lasik (projector beams).
  4. hrmmmm so make it tough on me. Is this a push button low/high? nipper
  5. Anyone have a on-line source for Gates belts or better? Blu just passed inspection (amazes me at 256,000 miles sometimes) and the dealer on the invoice recomended belts. Metric Subaru doesnt try to sell you anything verbally which is cool. I've noticed my belts squeel a but and i did replace one with a crappy autochain part store chineese junk one since it was about to break. It lasted all of three months (the belt was junk, so its not Blu's fault). The stores around here seem to sell junk belts. nipper
  6. STOP THE PRESSES! DUAL RANGE? You get stuck in neutral in the dual range? Here i thought it was in the forward gears. Next tiem this happens try jacking up one wheel of the car off the ground. This relieves driveline stresses (torque bind) and should fix the issues. Do not use 4wd on this car on pavement or packed dry surfaces. nipper
  7. Its been done before, conversion is a bit pricey but very doable. I would stick with FWD for range. If you do AWD you will loose range. Googel EV World or EV conversions or electric car conversions. Lots of info out there. nipper
  8. Yes if there is no CEL the senser is fine. Usually in the 99's cleaning up the grounds inside the spedo head solves the issue. If not then you have to replace it. There was a bad run of spedos in that year. nipper
  9. A real person reads thier email, so you can try that too. nipper
  10. Thats what i was thinking. Thingd have to be very bad to affect all the forks. Is your transmission and engine mounts in good shape? nipper
  11. No no no. By grabbing the linkage and shifting it, you get an honest feel for the condition of the shift forks inside the transmission. It will take a little force to get them in gear, but they should go in. nipper
  12. Can you shift the car from underneath, by moving the linkage at the transmission? nipper
  13. The TV show on scyfy channel. Aparently they are still doing the heavy product placement thing, but they only had one in this last episode. Since this was TIVO'd, all i know is that it is this seasons episode. Aparently Subaru bought alot of placement time. The only thing they didnt work into the episode was "symetrical All Wheel Drive". They even managed to work in the 0-60 time. The car was a WRX police car. nipper
  14. Lets jus say someone googled Subaru of America and found thier New Jersey Address Be overly nice to them, tell them you have been a loyal customer ever since Subarus were sold in this country, and how you named your children after Subarus. It cant hurt to ask. nipper
  15. You can have a failed solenoid and a tired clutch pack. That would give you no AWD even though the soleoid has failed. Since you had signs of this already this is most likely what happened. nipper
  16. Well if the solenoid is stuck wide open you may get a code. What is the code you have? nipper
  17. Solenoid failure usually throws the car into full time 4wd, not awd. Defaults is full time 4wd. The fuse puts the car in FWD for diagnostics, emergencies, and flat tires. No awd is a tired clutch pack. nipper
  18. Do both heads, otherwise you may never get a smooth running engine again. nipper
  19. How many miles? It sounds to me like all the bushings in the linkage are shot. nipper
  20. Diamond plate always looks cool, even the aluminum stuff. nipper
  21. Yes bent valves. And i agree that have a shop locally rebuild your heads. Lets keep those local machine shops in business. nipper
  22. I owned a corvair. And here i play with it in my head on how to put a subaru engine into a corvair nipper
