Snookered by the emissions police--Looking for help/background info
nipper replied to 79er's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell the rabbit ears still work, its the part between the rabbit ears and the TV that wont. i know NY stays with the year of mfg, as time does a better job of forcing old cars off the road then does forced emissions failures. And old cars that are still on the road usually pass with flying colors, as they are prized posessions.

nipper replied to 79er's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi did not know nor think they could make the emissions tighter then what they were for that year the car was made in. i wonder if anyone has tested this in a court?

nipper replied to 79er's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwere the standards always loose, and they just tightened them to the federal standard or somehting else? It's highly unusual for them to change the specs for an older car.

HHO Conversion on my Legacy
They still get 15% ? Seems sort of a waste of money since they just stand there.

Transmission: Help Please
nipper replied to jon38iowa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXStep one, clean the underneath of the car. I'm betting its not the tranny, but maybe one of the other many oil leaks subarus get with time. I dont remeber if this has a plastic or metal seperator plate. Likely canadits: Main seal front Cam Seals Oil Pump Seal These seals have a tendency to spray oil and make you thik the leak is coming from someplace else. Sooby trannies dont usually leak. So get yourself to a self rservice car wash with some engine cleaner. Clean under the car, then check it every day untill you can pinpoint the leak. nipper

Bad tires?
nipper replied to classact2575's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRotate your tires and see if it moves. If it does you found your answer. Also physically inspect the tires at that time. It also may be a rotor slightly warped. nipper

A/C squeeling and smoking
nipper replied to coolhonda...'s topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou have a siezed AC compressor. The fan belt is burning up and causing smoke. The smoke is pulled in to the car by the HVAC fan from the vents under the hood. Soon enough the problem will fix itself when the belt breaks. nipper

Water pump going south?
Usually the design parameter is around 100-110,000 miles, but they are so over built for what they do (and have to be) they usually last 50-70% longer, even more if the fluid is changed regularly. I would think it would have lasted till the first traffic jam in august with the mother in law in the car. nipper

nipper replied to njdrsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAlso if tyhis is the engine with the rod knock, that extra stress is going to wipe out that bearing in no time. There is a reason that companies spend a small fortune on balancing engines, and why they last so long. But then again, if this is the one with the rod knock, its doesnt have long on this earth anyway. nipper- Bubbles in my coolant!! Dangit!
nipper replied to Dickensheets's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXExcept it will trash your gas mileage. Just get it fixed. The longer you drive the car like this, the higher the possability of ruining the engine, especially if you want to go on a trip. nipper- Injectors Experiment...
nipper replied to njdrsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOf course it will cut off the fuel. The vibration can cause damage. Also you will use more fuel as the other three cylinders must work harder to get the car up to speed. Also since it is now not pulling its own weight, its just an air compressor, requireing more fuel from the other cylinders to move the dead cylinder. nipper- Stumbling on acceleration
nipper replied to Urban Coyote's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe need for a tuneup will do that. Do the pcv valve too.- MPG issues with a new Subie
nipper replied to Oregon_Legacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGet yourself one. Its also a vacume gauge. the higher the vacume the better the gas mileage. I think you may be on the turbo without realizing it, and that will hurt your gas mileage. once you get used to that bit of extra acceleration, you need to untrain yourself. nipper- hydro power
There is another post like this floating around. At idle your engine consumes about 250 cubic feet per minute of air. The ideal air fuel ratio for gasoline is 14.7 to 1. You can do the math, i wont :-p but between the load on the altenator, the amount needed to be produced, and the fact that no one seems to take into account how much water you need to produce said amount, even if it did work, wouldnt be worth it. nipper- Bubbles in my coolant!! nipper replied to Oregon_Legacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSomething just dawned on me, do the new soobies have a boost gauge? If not you may be on the turbo more then you realize, hurting your gas mileage. nipper- Stumbling on acceleration
