Too much oil?
nipper replied to mtbe's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Basically its called find a shop, one you can trust, and keep an eye on them. I use a jiffy lube, but i watch them. I was disapointed in the dealer service since they didnt top off any of the fluids. My regular mechanic gets the oil change if the car needs something else at the same time. nipper -
Too much oil?

Almost any shop has a 19.00-29.00 oil change special. Just when they tell you your car needs work, be able to say no. At any shop the oil changes go to the high school kid, the class three mechanic. nipper -
Let the rump roast ride an off dirt bike or ATV and see how hard work it is. In NY state ATV's are banned from most the state. They have been banned only because of injuries and not the noise level. The law sounds constitutionally vague as written, and unless fixed decibles and distances are stated, will most likely get tossed out. He is a spoiled rotten brat, but got to give him credit for standing by his words. nipper

Lots of states let you pump your own gas. Its more uncommon that you can't. Try a differnt pump or differnt station. The pump your using may be set to sensetively. And as suggested slow down the pump. No one is going to arrest you on the spot if pump your own gas to try to figure out what works best. nipper

Blow-by question on a carbed engine??
nipper replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When was the last time the PCV valve was changed ? The engine is showing some wear at that compression but still good. The subary chimney effect on the filler can be a little alarming, but nothing to be too concerned about. Gases get traped in that pipe. It may pay in the cold wether once a week to let the car properly warm up to burn off those contaimenets. nipper -
To be honest, unless the ecu cooked something, i couldnt tell from looking at it either. You said the fuel pump realy is working. you need air fuel spark to start a car. You have air. Without spark fuel is useless. Spark comes from the cam/crank sensor, sends a signal to the ECU, the ECU tells the ignitor to send a signal to the coils. The Fuel pump relay coil low side goes to the ECU. You said there is power on the low side. You said there was no power for a code reader. You checked that the ECU has power. Last check assuming you checked the position sensors is are the fuel injectors getting any signal.

i just want to rule out everything before you chase down an ECU. Its sounding more and more like an ecu. If: Crank Sensor tests good Cam sensor tests good No signal to the ignitor no signal to the injectors ECU is receiving power from both sources ECU ground is good then i would agree its the ECU. nipper

Converting my Loyale Wagon to Electric?
nipper replied to Davalos's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats what i was thinking, a second car for short trips and good weather. Winter i want HEAT! Summer i can deal with convertable or something akin to it. 80% of my driving is in the less then 20 mile range. Sadly i cant walk a miule yet, and i cant drive a stick. Now for you it may be a differnt story. But study your needs over a month. Look at the weather you have and what scarifices your willing to make. Also there is said sometrhing to be said for having a fuel powered vehical god forbid there is a power problem or you have to get out of dodge fast (like us with hurricanes). nipper -

There is no such thing as too many oil changes or to often. As long as the oil is getting contaiminated, just add oil to the level, and change it when you feel comfortable. nipper -
DO you have a sunroof ? You can have a leak, or the drain hose for the AC is clogged. Also make sure all your body drains are open. Do you have any rust? Rear brake sounds like it could be a cracked drum, but you dont know till you pull the drum off, but there is something wrong with it (hard spot, out of round etc). nipper

Converting my Loyale Wagon to Electric?

Actually thats very inneffecient. What would work is a small generator keeping a battery pack charged and the batteries driving the motor. Butr even that would would outpace each other on a long drive. i like the 45 mile range for around town, that would last me a week. Now if the kits werent so expensive. nipper -
the cylinder or the entire switch. you can remove the steering wheel trim to get access to look at it if your not sure. nipper

Aot of MFG's did that to get some extra time to get the bugs out. 1995 is a transition year for other things though (like spedo cables). I wouldnt be surprised if there is the odd 1995 OBDI running around. Now if subaru hasnt been able to make a good looking car since then, they havbe some serious issues Personally they got real ugly (or really dull) with the last generation of Legacy. I want to kick some designers in the but and tell them not all of us want to drive a camry clone. nipper
