Check your tires, make sure they all match and are inflated. If you have a manual there isnt anything you can do beyond that. If its an automatic pup the fuse in and see if it goes away. if it does you will need to change the tranny fluid asap. With luck you should be able to nip this in the but and not have any further issues. nipper

Sometimes Subaru runs a special on timing belt service. Lateley ive been finding subaru competative with local shops for some things (they were the same price as a tranny shop to repair my AWD guess who got the job). I used grand Prix SUbaru for that job. I am in oceanside and have a shop i like. nipper

If it was a majority of your miles that would be different. It really is just a matter of how much money they are asking for it, and what your comfortable with. remeber 215K may not be much for a subaru engine, but that are lots of bits peices attached between the flywheel and the tires that are just as important. Inspect the chasis carefully, anything else can be fixed. If your comfortable with it go for it. nipper

Replace the bushings with performance bushings and you will notice a big change. Also realize its a station wagon, not a wrx. the car is heavy and will have lean. But the polyurathane (i think thats it) bushings will help alot. The car has sway bars on it already, but you can go to a beefier one. nipper

I can tell from my bad back its not easy to just wire in a switch. I dont think its easy for somone over a x age with a good back. Passing wires through the firewall is not easy (glad i did all mine at once). nipper

But with computers, its normal for the battery to go dead in a month. a Top end car will do it in 2 weeks. Technically there is nothing wrong with the car, aside from it sitting too much. Remeber its not just the alarm. Its also the radio memory, the TCU and the ECU. nipper

Doing the Tbelt - can I start it w/out the aux belts?

The water pump, oil pump and cams are all thats needed to run the engine for a very short duration. If it runs crappy, it means the timing is off. nipper

Amuse me. Chek the voltage output of the alternator. If the altenator is dying, the battery light may not come on, but the brake light will (aint electricity fascinating). my altenator does this on my 1997. Once the altenator warms up, it pust out full voltage Dear Santa ..... nipper

nipper replied to usaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf this is you 99 2.5L it is time to replace the timing belt, cam and main seals, and reseal the oil pump. I dont think you need idlers or a water pump since those tend to be more mechanical in nature. Timing belts last about 7 or 8 years by factory spec ( which your coming up on ). Now if thst was from the early 1990's ild say replace everything. If its a big leak, its not dangerous perse, but it will smoke you out of the car with the defrosters on, and you run a danger of loosing a significant amount of oil out of the engine. nipper
