There is another solution. there is a anti-battery drain electronic switch. it goes between the battery and the terminal. Once the battery drops to specific point, it cuts the power to the system. When it senses a huge load (ie starting the car) it automatically resets. The downside is loosing any radio presets. http://www.prioritystart.com/ I have a problem with the cigerette lighter as charger things. battery cable is a 2 gauge i think . the cigar lighter is 16 gauge. 16 gauge can not hold that current. It may work depending upon how low your battery goes. With the remote starter, is it possible for you just to get out of the house once a week to start the car? Some cars are worse, and can drain themselves down in 2 weeks. nipper

Air bags look for a specific force and a specific shock profile. When i got rear ended at the red light at about 50 mph, the car that hit me did not have his airbag go off. They are finicky things. Soft hits (like soil) wont set them off necassarily. Glad your ok. A blow out on a curve at 30 mph can cause a loss of control they key is the curve. nipper

The FWD fuse is only a signal to the TCU to power the solenoid fully. it has nothing to do directly with the solenoid (thats why any fuse works) No FWD light on dash is most likely a burned out bulb. Thats what i did, i had the dealer replace mine for 825.00 nipper -
The first thing we really need to do is get somone to put a scope on the duty c solenoid and see what it is doing. They should be in snow country so they can play with things. Ideally it would be two (maybe three) inputs. One for the C solenoid, and the other two for the speed sensors. Once we get that information, we would know more about how the duty c cycle varies. My gut feeling is that more pressure is applied at low speed then high speed, and that the period is shorter (to allow for torque bind and higher Delta between sensors) then at highway speed. If we just stick with doing this at low speed, we may be able to go one better, and using a VSS have it unlock at 20mph and go back to the tcu. nipper

Some place in the last 15 years, the word hatchback and tiny car have become interchangable to americans. Honda for years fought internally to bring back a civic hatchback because of this. SAAB is the only one that got away with a hatchback, because it was a three door (this is where the three door and 5 door bit started). Hatchbacks also have higher insurance rates. To me the impala wagon is a 4 door hatchback. Same with the imprezza. Hatchbacks are very popular in europe. There have been studies on this, and attempts to hide a hatchback in some other ways. The term station wagon is also on that edge, hence now its a wagon, or the euro version, an estate (audi calls theirs the Avant). the term wagon is still holding on, but i think thats because of who offers wagons (Subaru Mercedes BMW Volvo) http://www.stationwagon.com/2001_models/2001_models.html (its an old page but notice how many wagons are upper end) Wagons are associated with upper range manufacturers, even thought there are fords and daewoos around (but how many of those have you seen) Personally i would love a legacy hatchback. Yes a good driver signals when they change lanes, they dont tailgate, and they wtach their dashboard. I can't beleive this is being discussed. you can be a danger to yourself or somone else by not scanning the dashbord. Dying in the middle of the road is very dangerous. There are a lot of idiots on the road, where the breakdown lane isnt safe either. Also I am 45, dad was a professional driver, and i was taught how to drive in High school, so that driving a million miles thing doesnt mean anything to me. I have driven just as much if not more. I am also an automotive enginner. Ild rather have gauges then idiot lights on my car any day. Yes the tach is something to be scanned also. The gauiges are there not to look pretty. You judge things in order of importance. I can tell you for a fact that the bottom of the subaru temp gauge is sluggish. the upper end reads higher then what the car is actually doing, but thats done for a reason. better for the gauge to read high then to read low and cook the engine. How do i know this? I have a scan gauge on my car so i can compare them. In my 26 years of drivng, i have had one broken thermostat. I have had altenators fail on me, but thanks to a gauge i could tell in advanced it was happening so i could decide when to break down instead of the car. the light its a 50/50 chance it will go on, and it wont go on in all failure modes.I have seen my temp gauge higher then normal, and that has told me that something was wrong with the car before it became an overheat condition. hell YES you shold be looking at the spedo when the cruise is on. How do you know the speed isnt creeping up. So by your a ferari is tuck in the carberator age since it has antiquated gauges instead of idiot lights. F1 race cars are stuck in the carb age since they have antiquated gauges. I'm bowing out of this thread, it goes against every common sense thing there is, and explains to me, and almost anyone on this board who craves gauges instead of idiot lights. i didnt say you should, i just said what is required. If its just a "300.00 car" then just drive it and dont worry about it. You are lucky it moves for 300.00 if you use that logic. Also i said a used tranny, not new. You do of course realize at some time it will need some new parts weather you like it or not, to keep from killing yourslef or someone else. So you have to realize that it runs, and not everything works for 300.00. You either live with it or put money into it to fix it. nipper -

The awd unit is in the tail of the transmission. Its easier to just replace the entire tranny, as the parts that are worn really need to be replaced with new. the amount of work that needs to be done its sort of silly to put in used. nipper -

When its that bad a fluid change wont help. the clutch packs are glazed, so they wont grab. If you have no transmission light, its the clutches. you need a new awd or to replace the tranny. nipper -

The factory system lasted me 10 years. the walker replacement p[ipes (guess who makes them for subaru) lasted untill the car fell apart 5 years later. No thanks ill pass. nipper -
Ok lets back up here. First thing to do is to replace the front 02 sensor. You will need to replace this anyway if you have a bad cat. the 02 sensor has the most to do with gas mileage. if you were complaing of poor performance (no pickup or cant get above specific rpm) then i would blame a clogged cat. You can fail inspection (even a non emission one) by having a modified exhaust. nipper

There is this thing on the dashboard, called an engine temperiture gauge. The gauge will read high if you are low on coolant, or if the thermostat gets stuck closed. Regular coolant changes of every 2-3 years are required. If you replace the thermostat it should be a factory thermostat. DO NOT let a subaru overheat hard, other wise you may blow a head gasket. nipper
