considering replacing motor mounts...
nipper replied to mwatt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXinspect the tranny mount. it seems if there is a mount to go bad thats the mount. i had a vibration in drive, then the tranny mount was replaced (when i had the awd unit replaced) and the vibration went away. Also make sure all the exhaust hangers are tight and functioning. nipper

Full size spare for 06 Outback
nipper replied to LeeLau's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe well holds a full size spare well. The rreason they dont have one is weight savings, as every ounce adds up to weight savings and better mpg. nipper

Manual VS Auto for AWD
nipper replied to jasinwa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi was thinking a pushbutton on/off controller with indictaor and a drop out relay. This way The relay drops out whenever you shut the car off and even if you do leave it on accidently it resets itself on restart. nipper

Tires
nipper replied to Bo13mwz's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi've never been happy with CR reviews on automobiles or anything auto. They don't follow standard testing procedures or tests. They are good at appliances etc etc etc, but im convinced that honda or toyots can make a lemon and they would still praise it. nipper

Manual VS Auto for AWD
nipper replied to jasinwa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXno maybe, will do it really fast, especially if you live someplace with alot of curving roads. It would be the same as driving with flat. Only in this case you would prorbably fry the clutches in a tank of gas, where as a flat does it quickly. nipper

Manual VS Auto for AWD
nipper replied to jasinwa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX100% duty makes the duty solenoid now an on/off solenoid. 100% on is 2 wd. 100% off is 50/50 split. If you dont mind the tranny temp light yelling at oyu everytime you start the car then its fine. But keep in mind the few times somone just throws a switch in, they come back a few months later saying their clutchpack is fried. There is the fast and dirty install, and a proper install, which makes the TCU happy, and helps avoid forgetting that the switch is in the one position (using a drop out relay and a couple of push buttons). nipper

Outback Sedans
nipper replied to mwerger's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually what they came up with is pretty standard, just the way they describe it is far more detailed then anyone else does, but from an enginneering point of view they are right on target with the rest. Odd i had a runin with an oldsmobile timing chain, a 1968 (this was 1980 something), a few freinds, and a bottle of tequila. We discovered you can put a timing belt in backwards (needless to say it was a mess) nipper

swap 2.5 for 2.2 in 97 outback
nipper replied to outbackusjunkus's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI can't..Motor is seized. I understand the 2.5 can be good, usually, but once bitten for me. 95 2.2 is in the truck, ready to go for the weekend, harvested from a "freshly killed" 95 at legacy. EGR and dual exhaust ports as advertised. Now...time to prepare...where's that cooler... its always those little details they leave out, a seized motor is a entirely new ballgame. nipper

90 Legacy with 93 drivetrain now torquebind
nipper replied to allantico's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi have lots of questions about this. Just swapping the then new parts back with the old is not the easiest thing in the world to do. If he didnt know what he was looking at it is very possible that the replacement parts were on thier way out to begin with. ALso they may look the same, but i dont know if the clutch pack from the two trannies are the same. A majority of the problem may be the mixing of the parts from one generation to another. How exaclty did he "replace" the parts the first time, were they new? There is nothing on transplants, since this isnt a transplant, this is a frankenstein sadly. The AWD unit is made up of the clutches, the solenoid and an internal pilot valve. WHen the solenoid is energized it dumps the pressure and no awd. The solenoid cycles on and off, and the amount of time between on and off regulates how much awd you get. 90/10 through to 50/50. you can also get AWD at wide open throttle, reverse, and low gear. nipper

Outback Sedans
nipper replied to mwerger's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit is far far more complicated then that. Subaru engines are more hearty then any four cylider gm has. http://www.eric-gorr.com/techarticles/Fuel_Basics.htm Just because all engines have a piston valves and a crankshaft does not mean they all behave the same. Subaru recomends premium, but doesnt insist on it. They will tell you you might notice a loss in performance. nipper

nipper replied to mwerger's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhttp://www.subaru-global.com/about/parts/12.html they say it never has to be replaced, but there have been some issues with tensioners on a few of them, and there are a hell of a lot of bolts to get to that puppy. i worry about never has to be replaced. Translation .. when it does its going to require a 2nd mortage. nipper
