  1. i dont beleive in synthetic tranny fluid, but a mix is fine. Ovefill is bad, causes the fluid to be airated and foamy. Smae for the differential. nipper
  2. if i rember correctly on a flathead, anything you do to it will increase performance. i dont think your going to have much luck, but will be interesting to see the dyno readings. (and im a stickler for dyno reports, so you need to record ambiant temp and RH to make me happy ) nipper
  3. Missfire codes usually are a failing coil pack. You have a classic sympton of a cracked coil tower. In the early evening pop the hood, start the car and look for sparks. Next using a spray bottle, spray the coils, and the wires. Look for sparks. nipper
  4. there are ton of places to get catalytic converters. You REALLY need a new mechanic. DO a search on google, also i buy my cats when i need them from JC Whitney. nipper
  5. well considering how little there is to them, its shouldnt be a nightmare. i'm beginnig to rethink my svx lust, and go back to my first love, a coravir, since in comparison, one is far easier to work on. nipper
  6. TC rarely go bad on these cars, now if he said a flex plate he may have had a point. Either way it sounds like you got taken, as thats aproaching the price of a rebuilt tranny. Subarus are like legos, Theparts from a majority of years will interchange. How does it run now? nipper
  7. i got it off ebay. Dont by any ol red fog lamp. You need to by one that is E rated I bought one like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=200019982806&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT nipper
  8. Damn i wish i thought of that the problem is though with the 2006 there is no fromt license plate mount. nipper
  9. Not to mention it is now working as air pump. Mathmatically it is 25%, in reality its probably a bit more. The way some of the engine analyzers work (the huge ones in shops) is that they shut down one cylinder and measure the rpm drop to come up with a compression ratio (along with a few otherparimiters taken while the cylinder is firing) it is extreemly accurate. So mathmatically at 25% it does work. nipper
  10. in addition side valve engines tend to be industrial engines that are available in the third world, or small displacement (lawn mowers). Even those engines are heading for emission controls. nipper
  11. as long as its within 1/4 inch circumfrence of the other tires its fine. nipper
  12. Wheels and tires : 16" alloy with 225/60R-16 M+S Bridgestone Potenza (mud and snow tires) http://www.cars101.com someone is trying to sell you more tire then you need. nipper
  13. i remeber back i the 1980's and 1990's where cats were being replaced quite regularly. Back then thy onlyu had to last 60,000 miles. They have come a long way. nipper
  14. in about a week as long as a- no more dr visitis for a month b- no more lawyers c- i get my new insurance cards d- i get a vacation override on my meds. Anyone live off of 70 ? still short one or two places to crash nipper
  15. biggest reason for failure is bad gas or running too rich. i think about 10 states now use california emissions, mostly in the northeast. The good thing about it is that its becoming less and comon to replace a cat.
  16. Everything is wired , man that rear fog light is bright... pics arent the best but http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=917 The driving lights arent diriving lights, but the arent fog lights either. They must be cornering lights, which is even better, otherwise known as midbeams. They through a lot of light off to the sides and almost as far as the high beams. i'm happy. Air horns are hooked up to, but im sort of disapointed as they arent as loud as i wanted. It can be that they are very directional, and there arent many places to mount them properly in the outback. nipper

  18. hehe ok i apolgize most the counter people i run into have no automotive expierience at all and just read the codes as they sit. i heard one say to somone he had 4 codes and needed 4 very expensive sensors. i sort of shook my head as i didnt want to get involved diagnosing, i just told him to get a second opinion. i also applied at a chain as a manager ( i was between jobs) and told i was over qualified (automotive engineering degree, many years pulling wrenches etc). . Oddly i like working retail. And as you said there is high turnover, how is someone off the street supposed to know that the person hes talking to knows what he is talking about? nipper
  19. Never trust a counter person to tell you what you need. You need to replace the 02 sensor. Its rare that a sooby needs a cat. Also even if it does need one, the 02 sensor still needs to be replaced, so replace the cheapest thing first. The first sensor shold be a sooby sesnor and that communicates with the computer, The second can be generic and that one is for cat performance. Last month i got this code, replaced the front 02 sensor, no more problem (of course it happened 2 days before inspection). Never rely on an autoparts chain store person to diagnose your car. nipper
  20. do you plan to dirve at 130 mph often? H = 130 mph s = 112 mph. S is fine. Just because the car came out with X tire does not mean that they always need to be the same. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=35 This is probably the second set of tires on the car, and they went with either something that was cheaper, available or both. Also OE tires may be over rated for what is required due to being a marketing tool, or getting a good deal from the tir mfg, or both. There is also some questions about the same make and model the car comes with is the same quality of what you and i buy at a tire store (tire store better). i can sort of see that argumnet, but dont beleive it myself. nipper nipper
  21. yes yes yes yes Steel bolts and aluminum engine, they see no stress. This has been covered many times to the afirmative nipper
  22. if they move one way and not the other, its not the fuse block. Its the switches most likely. Some power seats have motors for indivdual directions, others use one motor and a transmission. nipper
  23. bah on physists, they make matter up as they go along. If they cant solve an equation, they just make a new matter name and go looking for it nipper
