  3. hrmmm Seat belt gunk. It does seem to be a problem on the top guide thingy. il try cleaning that. You think that they can engineer around this after 20 billion seat belt retracitons. heheh nipper
  4. if the car has alot of milage, for the cost of the parts, i would just replace the tierod ends, balljoints and sway bar bushings and be done with it. nipper

  6. Its hard to tell, it depends how over torqued things were. If there was no play in the wheel after you re torqued it, you may have cut the bearings life, but not destroyed them. Subaru bearings are over enginered for what they do. One other warning, there is such a thing as too much grease. nipper
  7. well i wouldnt say crappy, it saved my life\ Odd feeling when it gihtens up on you, but the mechanisim doesnt age well. nipper
  8. im sorry yes i maent that too. if the ball joint has an internal spring they can only be tested with the prybar, but the pyrbar works for both. Of course there is the subtle hint when the wheel falls off .. nipper
  9. This is my only pet peeve i have had, i think subaru seat belts hate me. The drivers side seat belt does not fully retract, i have a 97OBW, but my legacy, even my 88 and 84 Gl did it. This is annoying, especially when its rainng and you get a nice wet seatbelt in your lap. ( i only wegh 200 lbs and built like a linebacker so lets not blame over extension ) How do i fix this before i dig into the car. nipper
  10. its easy. first off is the car tracking strraight, or is it fightiing against ruts and seems in the road. thats the first flag that something is up. Make sure the lug nuts are tight. Jack up the wheel of the car (pick one) remove the wheel cover. You may need a freind to help. grab the tire at 3-9 postion and shake it. listen and feel to see if there is any play at the center of the wheel (bearing). Next do this and look at the tie rod end, there is to be zero play. Next take a 2x4 or pipe and pry the tire up and down. Again there should be zero play Also during this tim look at the lower control arm bushing, it should not be moving aside from up and down. Look at the sway bar bushings. If you have done all this and still feel something loose, i would suspect the wheel bearing (its hard sometimes to diagnise if you never done it before, and its just starting to go). Repeat on the other side. Also while the tier is up in the air, spin it. Make sure it is round and true, look for dimples in the sidewalls. nipper
  11. it sounds like they want to me they want to pull the engine, possibly reseal the engine and replace the clutch cam seals main seals timing belts cylinder head water pump and oil pump seals timing belts? or am i wrong. if they are doing all that, they are high but bot that high nipper
  12. You ned to take it to a tranny shop, a dealer will want your first born male child and child to be named later. The shift linkage has a single shift rod that not only selects 1-2 but also moves it to 3-4 and 5-r. Other shifters use two rods, one for the front back motion and on to move from 1-2 to 3-4 5-r. It looks like the 1-2 3-4 5-r shift forks are internal to the transmission. The onl thing i can relate this to is olf rwd VW. They used one rod. The rod would select the forks to move, with the movement of the lever. The forks on the VW had two notches on them , where a sping loaded check ball lock the fork in place untill moved. When this fork wore out, the car would pop out of gear. My feeling is that what ever method is used to select which fork to choose is worn. Its been ages since ive worked on a manual tranny on a car, but if i recal this does not require a rebuild. The forks can (used to be) servicable. i dont know about subarus. The good news is the shifter doesnt seem to be part of the tranny.   13. OK its a stick. For some reason the shift forks inside the transmission are engagin two sets of gear at the same time. This is the only way you can lock up the transmission. I woudl have somone inspect the shifter and linkage, and motor mounts. its possible that there is sometrhing wrong with all three that you are just barly grabing the two sets of gears, then the physical movement of geting the car on the tow, getting it off, is disengagin what ever two sets of gears (1-2, 3-4 or 1-2 and 2-r, not sure about 5) This is going to be a tough one to diagnose, since even the act of jacking the car up may be enough to unstick the transmission. It is poossible its a bad shift fork. Have you noticed and slack in the shifter? nipper

  15. tire rack will drop ship to a mechanic of your choice, or one of thier installers. hehe i did have them shiped to the house onse just because i wanted to see how they were packaged nipper
  16. have your parking brake inspected to make sure it works. Porper way to park a car (which no one does including me unelss ...) on a hill. Stop the car with the brake pedal (hey on im back drugs so stop giggling), apply the paking brake fully, THEN put the car in park. a manual same thing but put the car in reverse. If you are on a steep enough hill, the load on the parking pawl (its just a rod in the tranny) will be so great that you cant move the selector out of park. nipper
  17. it could be just a bad run of ecu's, i bet they replaced it and didnt re-calibrate it. They can reprogram it in less then an hour. Glad its fixed. nipper
  18. could be a bushing not in the strut, but on one of the control arms .. just something else to look at, as i like to list all the possabilities. nipper
  19. Its called accountant enigineering. Cheap bulbs. (my theory). The radio shack bulbs are far superior and last a lot longer, and are far more inexpensive then subaru (if they will even sell them to you). nipper
  20. a bad ignitor can drive you to insanity. Il'd check the ignitor, or get one from a junkyard an swap it in (or three). This because of the timeline, sounds like once the mystery compnenet heats up, it develops an open and fails. nipper
  21. Time to call the area service rep on this. This is too dangerous to let go nipper
  22. First thing to do is check the tires, you may have a belt seperation that may not be showing up in the seat of your pants. Rotate the tires and see if it moves to the front of the car. Give it a shot nipper
