Preventative Maintenance
nipper replied to morrocco88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFirst thing i would do is pull off the timing blet covers, and like said, inspect all the seals and see what they look like. i would suspect if a head gasket was done, the valve cover gaskets would be new, the exhaust gasket, not to sure what else would be easily seen. i imagine eht e cylinder heads would look cleaner then the rest of the engine under the covers. Replace timing belts, if the other seals look ok, replace the crank seal, waterpump, oil pump seals, and any belt idlers. There is no tranny filter to replace, but a tranny flush will avoid torque bind. USe suabru coolant and deminerilized water, and you should be good to go. ALso check the vin with a dealer to see if any recalls were fixed. You may even luck out and find out a dealer did the headgasket. nipper

new to the board need some help
nipper replied to detubbs's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXnice try but .... when the defroster is on it pulls in fresh air no matter what you have the climate control set at. The ac alwyas comes on with defroster, unless its really cold outside. Keep looking, as the failure mode for the ac clutch is it wiether seizes or stops working. i still say you have a fluid leak. nipper

Synthetic Oil AFTER replacing seals?????
nipper replied to mal's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyou know there are two school of thoughts on this, one says it will leak, others say it wont. Personally i would just stay with regular dino oil at that age in the car. i mean the car is 9 years old, why even take the risk. What are the reasons you want to switch oils. nipper

And tricks or tools needed to swap doors in an OBS?
nipper replied to idosubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt should be just a bolt on, then you will have to check them for alignment. Alignement can be a bear, or real easy if you never done it before. nipper

nipper replied to detubbs's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCheck all your fluids, including the power steering fluid (which is overlooked ... but can leak on the pipes). If you think its a fluid leak, next time you park the car, slide a clean peice of cardboard under the car, and let it sit overnight, then check it out. To keep the gasses from leaking into the cabin, put the heater on recirculate, which will work for heat, but not for the defrosters as it will override your selection. You can see the CV boots from under the hood. nipper

My 91 Legacy needs your love
nipper replied to Rhubey's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds like you need to check your clutch cable adjustmenr, and possibly the throw out bearing is letting you know it is there. Adjust the cable then keep an eye on it. Do you know if the clutch was ever replaced? nipper

02 Leg/Out brake job...need expert input
nipper replied to jgang's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYup the holse dont have to be very big, nor alot of them to be proper, hence my comment on you get what you pay for. Cgeap driled factory rotors have too many holes that are too big that are too close tto the edge of the disc. nipper

02 Leg/Out brake job...need expert input
nipper replied to jgang's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCars do suffer from brake fade today, just not that many thank goodness. Drilled rotors can be done right or can be done very wrong, they must be cross drilled and then properly annealed to reduce the stresses of the drilling. Therws is alot more to it then just driling holes int disc, as alot of cheap rotors do do. SLoted rotors are good, but i dont know if they are available for the roo. http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/rotors.txt http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=6955 corvete uses crossdrilled rotors http://www.corvettemuseum.com/specs/2006/index.shtml http://www.valvoline.com/carcare/articleviewer.asp?pg=pht20000717tp&cccid=4&scccid=5 but i will conced that slotted may be better then drilled, as it seems the only place to get good drilled discs is brambo ild still put brambos on my car anyday. A brake sysytem is a trade off many tyhintgs, like anything else in the car, and you need to look at your driving style. It should be looked at as asystem and not individual parts, and the most forgotten peice of the system is usually the flex brake lines. nipper

Brake Light On
nipper replied to Sydfloyd44's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXa brake light is something that you NEVER ignore, out off all the lights on the dash this one comes on you investigate it immediatly. It sonds like the resivoir is low, and thats from a leak or the pads are worn down really low. Im going to suspect its the pads since your not complainging about brake performance. ABS may or may not come on with low pads, on some brands it does (like GM), and some it comes on when the third brake light is blown. Just and FYI. nipper

grinding (abs) in only one wheel?
nipper replied to fnlyfnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually when does it make this noise, all the time or just first thing in the morning? On inspections, they only pull one wheel to inspect the brakes if the dont do it electonically, and fro some reason its always the left front, murphies law i guess... so its possible you have a sticky caliper and a bad pad ... nipper

97 Outback vibration
nipper replied to 97OutbackTN's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXim thinking its a partially clogged catalytic converter. Here is a test if it is. Next time the problem occurs, note what engine rpm it is happening at. Next shifting the car manually, in D3 see if it happens at the same engine rpm, and at d2. It should happen but at a lesser extent due to the rpm/hp curve ... just an idea. A cloged cat doesnt always throw a code, but it will get worse with time. Other possabilities are a collapsed exhaust system, or as stated before a blocked air box. nipper
