A simple problem
TheSubaruJunkie replied to MachineAgeVictim's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Set your timing to 10 or 12 degree's. Also, isnt there something you can plug with a quarter to fix backfire problems on those old EA's? -Brian -
Ea82 is wider than a EA81. Ive heard of people having to modify their frame rails to fit a EA82 into their EA81 vehicle. I think the engine bay of a Gen1 is even smaller than that of a Gen2, so Im not sure a EA82 will fit right. The EA81 should work. I believe you'll need the engine crossmember from a 1981 Brat (Gen1 with 1800) for it to bolt right up. -Brian

PROVE SUBIEJIM WRONG!!! RX discussion!
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Zefy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The FT4WD and the AWD Tranny's should be identical. I'd be interested in hearing your point of view on the slight differences as I dont see how there could be any. Ive never seen a legacy with a diff lock switch... but i do know the STi's have one that is variable. -Brian -
the VF11 is a good turbo to use. From what i hear, its smaller than the TD04, but it bolts up the same. Which is good, its a near bolton for your EA82T. However... The Bolt pattern for your up-pipe needs to be modified slightly. You will also need to run a WRX or the Legacy downpipe. You will also need to re-route your intake plumbing. The VF7 on your EA82T has its output pointing straight up, whereas the VF11 is at a slight angle. The stock EA82T intake plentum wont match. -Brian

Went and pulled codes. Well, expecting to pull alot of codes, but just found 1. Code 22, knock sensor. So i goto check out my sensor. While trying to get the plug off, i accidentally ripped the wire from the sensor... woops. So i tried to twist the plug to make it easier to get too, and the knock sensor just twisted off in my hand... WOOPS! LOL Guess it helps if the sensor is actually tightened in all the way. So I took the time to clean the terminal on the wire, also replaced the sensor with a spare I had, and put everything back together. Luckily the wire just snaps back in place in the plug... and i actually used a wrench this time when re-installing the sensor. Started the car, and no more CEL!! Also no more pinging... but where there was once ping there is now hesitation. I will have to check the timing again and install my intercooler now. WOOT -Brian

TheSubaruJunkie replied to Zefy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Your right.. jim doesnt know what he's talking about. FWD/4WD Cars dont have a center diff. When you pull the lever, it activates the RWD and you have 50/50 4WD.. no slippage or anything. The RX's FT4WD Trans is like any AWD system. It has an open center diff. Its not locked 50/50, but it by far is NOT FWD. Once you flip the switch your open center is now a locked center diff, and you have 50/50 like any true 4WD would. Its a wonderful thing! Subaru should have done more of it. -Brian -

Northern Nevada Meet 4/1/06
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Jibs's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Hey guys... hope this works. My DSL has been down, i kinda tricked it into working. Anyhow, the RX made it there and back with no problems. Other than the coolant hose blowing. Sorry jeremy it had to be you that was driving at the time, only wish I could see the look on your face The wheeling was awesome! The dirt we were on was very forgiving, im glad none of us broke anything. Dave, your flat tire doesnt count Too bad my Wagon had to go and blow a head gasket. Probably shouldnt have driven it to the gas station with no coolant Oh well, i think i have a lead on a replacement wagon... now that I know the RX can make the trip (and effortlessly might I add) we will have to setup another wrench fest soon... Jibs... check that camera. There is some awesome footage of Dave conquering that 1st hill climb I know i got some great shots of you and jeremy trying as well. Oh, and thanks for letting me mob your silver brat through that puddle, that thing runs nice! Still needs a low range :-p Hey STi dude, you gotta try to make it out with us sometime. Whens your dads birthday? We'll try not to plan it for that weekend -Brian -
Can I force my defroster to work?
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Guys. Went out to check that vacuum line, and it looks like i didnt re-connect it quickly found a vacuum source and now the defrost is working WOOHOO!!! RENO HERE I COME! -Brian -
EA82T, RX, stupid buttons for the defrost, heater and blower wont work. The OFF works, but then i cant get anything to work. When i got into the car this morning and turned the blower fan on, it works but blows through the vent as if the A/C button is pressed. The Defroster is pressed, but no matter what I do i cannot get air to come out of the defroster. Sucks cause I gotta drive over the pass tonight and I cant really see through foggy windows. Is there a way to manually force air to go through the defroster? -Brian

Flutter under boost
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, ive run this Intercooler before, on the old engine and it was nowhere near 3psi drop (what did you have? a kenworth Front Mount?) With the stock engine it was a night and day difference with the intercooler and without. With the intercooler I had hardly any hesitation under boost and acceleration (well, until my knock sensor went bad... different story). Oh, and with the high comp pistons, i can afford to give up 3psi if i have to. -Brian -

Thats a good idea, i may have to go do that. When i put all that on, i was eager to get the car running so I wonder if maybe i didnt tighten the intake plentum tight enough? I did connect the green connectors and my CEL went off (oh yeah, it came back on yesterday and has been on all day). Then i checked the timing and it was at 18 degrees. So i bumped it up to 20 degrees and went for a test drive. Still some hesitation but im hoping the intercooler fixes some of that. -Brian
