EA81 Water Pump
Dave the water pump couldnt be any easier to replace even if it were bolted directly to the top of the motor The impeller is int he pump., and the entire pump sits flush to the motor. As soon as you unbolt the old pump, just give it a good thwak with the backside of your hammer and it should pop right off. Then bolt the new one on.. badabing -Brian

Bay Area Meet... Early May?
Ok guys, my car is running so there is no excuse now. Im willing to travel to the bay area to meet some of you oldschool guys out there. Looks like everyone is busy in April, so how about we plan for something early May? Would also like to plan something central to us all. Maybe we can do a drive in Napa Valley. I know of some awesome roads out that way, also know of some good places in Sonora... but that maybe too far for some to drive. Lets start brainstorming. I want everyone there! -Brian

Water In exhaust?
Phizinza's got it. Instead of Auto Trans Fluid, I use MMO (marvels Mystery Oil) or some seafoam. Rev the motor to about 2500rpm and dump about 1/4 qt. into the carb... let the carb choke, but keep the motor alive. Do that about 2 or 3 times. -Brian
-
Water In exhaust?
Yeah, definatly sounds fuel related. I doubt its anything like a blown headgasket tho Check your filters and for the heck of it spray some carb cleaner around the base of your carb. Check for any leaking carb or manifold gaskets. I would also try the italian tune up. -Brian

Subaru owners have to own old VWs, too?
Classic Dave! Ive never owned a VW, but ive always wanted one. -Brian
-
Water In exhaust?
Doubt the water we drove through last weekend would make it act like this, expecially 3 days later. Might need to perform one of daves "italian tune ups". Could have gotten some gunk in the carburator. And yes... the idle on your brat is alittle high ;-) -Brian oh, and when was the last time you changed the fuel filters? That could cause a problem like this.

How much money and effort would you put in to your car? 5 grand?
Well 1st, let me say this. If you put a lift and tires on that pretty wagon, after a couple wheelin trips your going to destroy your $5000 Subaru. Now, let me tally up what ive gotten into my RX: Car: $1000 Rims: $80 Tires: $280 (Mount & Ballanced) Exhaust: $300 (No idea WHY you'd pay $600... ive never paid more than $300 for a COMPLETE exhaust.) Suspension: $60 Intercooler: $40 Pipe for I/C: $30 New(er) Turbo: $80 Stereo: $200 Amps: $150 Subs: $150 then my motor blew up... so now... Block #1: $80 Woops, that block is bad Block #2: $80 Head work: $335 (polished ports, valve grind, new guides, whole shabang) Clutch Kit: $150 SOA Gasket Kit: $200 Not about to add all that up, im affraid to see how much I've dumped into it. All I can say is Junkyards are your friend. Find a Factory Service Manual, and learn how to read & understand it. Unless you enjoy paying other people to work on your car. Thats cool to, just dont come crying to us "WAhhh i spent $5000 on my subaru" -Brian

A simple problem
Set your timing to 10 or 12 degree's. Also, isnt there something you can plug with a quarter to fix backfire problems on those old EA's? -Brian

Ea81 / Ea82
Ea82 is wider than a EA81. Ive heard of people having to modify their frame rails to fit a EA82 into their EA81 vehicle. I think the engine bay of a Gen1 is even smaller than that of a Gen2, so Im not sure a EA82 will fit right. The EA81 should work. I believe you'll need the engine crossmember from a 1981 Brat (Gen1 with 1800) for it to bolt right up. -Brian

Front diffrential, accel, or tranny. One is going to blow apart. help
bad axle, or bad hub. Doubt its a bad tranny. Well, since its a 3AT, that tranny has been bad since it rolled off the assembly line -Brian

PROVE SUBIEJIM WRONG!!! RX discussion!
The FT4WD and the AWD Tranny's should be identical. I'd be interested in hearing your point of view on the slight differences as I dont see how there could be any. Ive never seen a legacy with a diff lock switch... but i do know the STi's have one that is variable. -Brian

1993????
the VF11 is a good turbo to use. From what i hear, its smaller than the TD04, but it bolts up the same. Which is good, its a near bolton for your EA82T. However... The Bolt pattern for your up-pipe needs to be modified slightly. You will also need to run a WRX or the Legacy downpipe. You will also need to re-route your intake plumbing. The VF7 on your EA82T has its output pointing straight up, whereas the VF11 is at a slight angle. The stock EA82T intake plentum wont match. -Brian

No More CEL (WOOT)
Went and pulled codes. Well, expecting to pull alot of codes, but just found 1. Code 22, knock sensor. So i goto check out my sensor. While trying to get the plug off, i accidentally ripped the wire from the sensor... woops. So i tried to twist the plug to make it easier to get too, and the knock sensor just twisted off in my hand... WOOPS! LOL Guess it helps if the sensor is actually tightened in all the way. So I took the time to clean the terminal on the wire, also replaced the sensor with a spare I had, and put everything back together. Luckily the wire just snaps back in place in the plug... and i actually used a wrench this time when re-installing the sensor. Started the car, and no more CEL!! Also no more pinging... but where there was once ping there is now hesitation. I will have to check the timing again and install my intercooler now. WOOT -Brian

Your Worst EA82 failure
I threw a rod in my EA82T. Came through the top of the block, split it wide open. I got pix, will have to post them later (im at work). Also, i know Brad (Subaru_Styles) has also blown up a EA82T. -Brian

PROVE SUBIEJIM WRONG!!! RX discussion!
Your right.. jim doesnt know what he's talking about. FWD/4WD Cars dont have a center diff. When you pull the lever, it activates the RWD and you have 50/50 4WD.. no slippage or anything. The RX's FT4WD Trans is like any AWD system. It has an open center diff. Its not locked 50/50, but it by far is NOT FWD. Once you flip the switch your open center is now a locked center diff, and you have 50/50 like any true 4WD would. Its a wonderful thing! Subaru should have done more of it. -Brian
