40 Miles per gallon with ol Gl wagon
TheSubaruJunkie replied to roadsubiedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah i didnt track my milage on this trip. My PDA was dead, and it has the software I use. I was lead-foot the entire way so i doubt it would have mattered. On the way home, i had an additional 50lbs on the bumper (installed my brushguard when i was in Reno) and also installed my roof rack so im sure there was more drag. -Brian -
40 Miles per gallon with ol Gl wagon
TheSubaruJunkie replied to roadsubiedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats some impressive MPG you got there. My '84 GL Wagon once got almost 60 miles to the gallon. BUt that was on a road trip from Ashland Oregon to Weed CA. I was following my buddy and he was following big-rigs the entire time. I think the wind draft helped alittle, cause after we left Weed my MPG dropped back down to the 30's. Im gonna be driving my new '84 GL Hatch from Sac to Reno today, and I think im going to log my miles and calculate my MPG. We'll see what i come up with. -Brian -
Awesome video and even better music. Resolution could be alittle better, but definatly some awesome action shots! -Brian

EA 81 rebuild guidance
TheSubaruJunkie replied to subestyle18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, the factory service manual. -Brian -
WOW the search function does work! Dont mean to dig up a dead post, but this should come to the top Im gonna do away with those PK rear brackets (sorry patrick, no offence) when i swap the lift to my hatch. -Brian
-
Oh, it may still become my daily driver I will have to take it easy... i hear these hatches are easier to wheel than the wagons. I will be sure not to piss any of you guys off. And Rob, it would be an honor to park my hatch next to yours at the show! -Brian

Last one i sold, GD, i traded straight across for a custom 2.5" Downpipe for the RX Oh, and the one before that I sold at the WCSS to Mike for $125. Ive known MAV for a few years and would rather see him with it than some Datsun guy. PM me bud -Brian

Yeah i cant wait to test it out. Im sure its gonna be alot lighter than the wagon, so going uphills wont be such a pain. -Brian

Went and picked it up yesterday. This weekend I will be extracting my lift from my old Wagon, and putting it on the hatch I'll have to find a way to scrape together some money for new tires... but Im hoping my coopers still have alittle life in them. We'll soon see More pix are here http://gallery.usmb.net/hatch Should be fun to see this hatch develop. And will be even more fun wheelin it! -Brian

another oil pressure question
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Kudos's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like thats normal to me. Maybe alittle low at idle, but any pressure is good. The tapping might valves out of adjustment. If the car is a 4speed, you most likely have solid lifters, check their clearances with a feeler gauge. The Owners manual should have the info for the valves. -Brian -
We should put this in the USRM for those of us too cheap to buy the right tool -Brian

$1250 :-\ 2nd most expensive Subaru I've bought, and its gonna tear me up when I go out and beat it up on the trails. But ive been searching for years for one... and one in this good of shape is worth it i guess. Russ, will definatly be makin the trip to WCSS8. Me and Jibs will be leaving for the show extra early to put in some more wheeling time on the way -Brian

Well, there's no point in resurrecting my Wagon The last time its really been wheeled was almost a year ago, when i managed to brush a tree and ruin my passenger side door. No worries really, but a year before that I struck a chunk of granite with the lower control arm. Front passenger side and it managed to tweak the arm really good. I replaced it with a new arm, but the swaybar and underbody mount were also bent, so the new arm is wedged in there real good. Makes for some very interesting pull to the right side, and turning left is a real chore. For the past few months, Jibs has been nice enough to store my lifted wagon at his property. I had moved to a new place, and the new house doesnt have room to store a beatup, broken down subaru. I did manage to get it out on a wheelin trip a few months ago with Jibs and his lifted brat. I believe that was the run that blew my headgasket Sooooo.... Thanks to my tax return this year I was able to pickup another EA81 to replace the wagon. Camping season is here, and i need to get out and do some fishing and get back into wheelin again! So thanks to uncle sam, and craigslist I went and picked this little gem up yesterday 148k on the ticker and the thing runs like a clock. A couple small dings here and very little rust (although it does have some rot, nowhere important). So, here in a couple weeks I should be making a visit to Jibs, where we will start to dismantle my old wagon. I will be transfering the lift, bumper and rear brakes to the hatch. Also, last weeks yard run netted an LSD which will end up in the new hatch as well. Ive almost lost count, but i believe this makes #14. Only EA81 type left to buy would be a sedan and 2dr coupe. Next to my wagon (when it was new), this has to be the smoothest runnin EA81 ive owned. Im not 100% sure, but the butt-dyno even tells me it out accelerates and pulls harder than my RX Guess that means I better do some more work on the RX tomorrow (new turbo sitting on the bench, different story). Anyhow, if you wanna see more pictures I will be putting them all in this album http://gallery.usmb.net/hatch I'll be updating that album whenever i get new pix so check back soon! -Brian

Reno-Tahoe-Northern Nevada Meet!
TheSubaruJunkie replied to subieman's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
You forgot Scrub... but i think we gotta get him another Subaru You know im always up for a meet. I think we're up for a small wrench fest to tear down my wagon. -Brian -
Who cant have much use of the USMB? Doesnt seem like a very social guy to me. Sounds like the dude who won best EA82 at last years WCSS. -Brian
-
I believe STD's were offered as Single Range 4WD 1600's. -Brian
-
Hey i fixed that damage! Can hardly even tell it happend. -Brian
-
Wrecked... 0 My cars run right. THe RX is running now, has been running pretty good for the past 2 months. My lifted wagon is forced into retirement after i beat it up on the trails. But, you know as well as I do how off-roading effects these subarus. IIRC you had to retire you hatch cause of it too. -Brian
-
The STD models are pretty much lower on the food chain than DL's. Not many were made, but its not that rare. -Brian
-
Wow hatchy, you need to calm down. The way i see it, GD is the only one on this thread to set things straight. And he's right. Unless you so some dramatic engine modifications, your still gonna have a 1800cc OHV EA81, and you'll be lucky to see 80hp with the weber. Removing the smog stuff wont make any more power.... but it will clean up the interior of your engine bay. So before you ask for help next time, make sure your ready to apreciate it. Or just freakin do it, then later we can hear you ask stupid questions like "why isnt my hatch running anymore?" -Brian

I used a N/A MPFI XT block for my motor. Dont know what CR it is really, looks like everyone has their own opinion. All i know, is I like not having to rely on boost. I do miss my 10psi but im happy with 6psi and higher compression. I say you do it Russ... use whatever block you can get your hands on that looks the best, but watch your boost. Dont over do it, and tune your car right. Ive only put about 800 miles on my car since Ive got it running. At this time, Im having some wierd boost problems, i hope its only my turbo. -Brian

Free 92 Loyale.. Blown Headgasket? (Q's!)
TheSubaruJunkie replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Eli... run the motor with coolant and fresh oil if you can. Let the motor reach operating temps and shut the motor off. Carefully remove the radiator cap, then restart the motor. Check to see if the coolant is bubbling, and if there is any exhaust fumes comming from the radiator. That there would be an indication that the head gasket has failed. That and a compression test are 2 ways to tell. -Brian
