  1. Thats a huge gap.. Why not try something a little more conservative like .045-.050
  2. Backfire between shifts could be something as simple as an exhaust leak...especially in cold weather Do a quick search for the leads torxxx gave you.. thats ringing a bell in my empty head.. but not being much of a carb guy, I couldn't explain it to you if I tried.. seems sometime in the past, Qman gave some good info on it though.
  3. Kieth has a point on the Gas mileage thing.. Turbo+AWD+Auto Tranny = crappy gas mileage..No way around that.. will be substantially worse than EPA rating if you use the turbo the way it should be:D
  4. You, and everyone else experiencing that problem need to let SOA that their response to it is most unacceptable. SOA customer service really seems to suck when it comes to dealing with known problems.( for a prime example, do a search for 'clutch judder') I love my soobs, but unless money starts falling from the sky, I doubt I will ever buy a new one.
  5. Not at all. I am stressing to him that a five lug swap and an ER27 in an EA81 car is NOT a traight bolt on swap. He stated that he would be having a mechanic do most of the work. However you put it miles, it is custom work. Shops charge out the rump roast for custom work. That is just a fact of life. I would hate to see someone spend thousands of dollars on a $500 car because he thought it was an easy swap. as far as getting an ER27 into an EA81 car, ask Adam or Subaru brat how much work it was.. its not just swapping a motor. You know as well as I do that when modifying something beyond factory specs that there are always a thousand little things that need to be done. you and I may have the skills to do them, so it doesn't seem like such a big deal.. But take an old beatup soob to a shop and tell them to build you a trashwagon 5 + an ER27, and you will most assuredly be throwing a quite a lot of cash his way for the suspension mods, radiator relocation, and all of the other myriad little things that one stumbles across when doing a major mod. it is better to be 'overinformed' than underinformed and oversimplified. PS..MSSLGECKO.. for lifts, go to http://www.ozified.com
  6. I think Emily may have made a typo. The engine is noninterferential. A broken timing belt will not cause a bent/broken valve. I would be more inclined to believe that the timing belts were installed incorrectly. That would cause it to run like crap and have low compression.
  7. Yup.. the ones from autozone should fit our cars.. was just looking at them recently.. they are 14.99 for the adapter.
  8. Different cams as well.. 87-90 has 4 more HP than 85-86
  9. You would not be the first person to have a bad ECU.. Mine went up in smoke about 7-8 months ago.. Another board member came to the rescue with a used one.. its not a common problem, but I have seen it a few times now( all on turbo cars.. hmmm).. If it has taken 5 days and they still don't know why it isn't getting spark, and they think it might be a bad ECU, I would consider taking it to another shop.. maybe one that has more subaru experience..thats way too much time for a 'professional' to be working on it, without giving you any answers. There is a very thorough troubleshooting tree for ECU problems in the FSM, which your mechanic should have access too in some form or other.. if he doesn't have access to it, he's wasting your time. I think you should just send your RX to me.. I promise to give it a good home. What year is your RX? BTW, as a concerned citizen, I recommend against calling the dealer for a price on an ECU.. I would really hate to hear that you had a stroke when they told you how much they charge for old soob stuff.
  10. Have you checked for a leak at the compressor itself? They do get old and blow seals too.. Try PMing Electrycmonk.. Hes another one of you weirdos that insists on keeping the air ride on his cars.(quick elbow in the ribs to steve:D) He has 3 functioning air ride cars and now has quite a bit of experience dealing with its crap.. er.. uh.. quirks.. If you do insist on keeping it, be sure to do 2 things. Create a seperate bank account and continuously put moderate amounts of money in there to keep your air ride in shape. And make sure you set aside at least half of your yearly scheduled vacation time to work on it. (Is it obvious that I don't feel bad about my car not having air ride anymore?)
  11. See.. What'd I tell you ? Chances are you do have parts from one of my cars.. everyone around there seems too..Ol' Rob supplied me with a good deal on a couple of TO bearing clips(free).. next thing I know he has not one, but TWO of my subarus in his yard!! Seriously though, cool deal Greg. Its good to see more active/ useful new members on the board..And the guys up in that area are great soob people.. Even go so far as to say they are nice guys..Except Ken.. (I promised I wouldn't tell anyone he was a nice guy)
  12. ER27 and five lug into an EA81 car? yeah it can be done. It will take a bit of fabrication.. What miles didn't tell you was just how much custom fabrication it took rguyver to do 5 lug on a brat, or how much re-engineering it took Adam and Subarubrat to stuff an ER27 into their brats. If you are paying a mechanic to do this stuff for you, make sure he has a very good imagination, lots of fabbing skills and time.. Oh and make sure you have thousands of dollars in cash to continually throw at him.. have no illusions.. what you are asking is a custom project bordering on a monster garage type thing. BTW ER27 is 140-145 HP Edited for spelling typos
  13. Yessir Skipper sir, I sure did pinch off the return line. Boneyard pump it shall be!
  14. If the owners manual say 90, I would go with 90( or above).. Personally, whenever I run less than 91( no 90 here) The car feels sluggish and gross.. I run 93 all the time.. I get the best performance from it that way.. Almost every car I have had over the past 10 years has been turbocharged and I don't recommend 87 for ANY turbo car..
  15. Factory alarm on an 87 GL-10 Turbo? Never heard of such a beast. Please tell me more about it.
  16. Slapped a fuel pressure tester on my wagon yesterday.. never got above 30psi (kida oscillated from 22-30) ... Time for a new fuel pump.. This eplains quite a lot about the lack of power that I have had right after boost comes on.. also explains why passing anyone at 70+MPH on my trip to Austin last week was such a joke..Oh well.. I have new plugs, wires, air filter and fule filter.. after the pump, she should be a very happy car... Now if I can just find a good one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...
  17. Its all a plot.. Them there Warshington boys is tryin to take over the subaru world.. First they sucker you in with good deals.. Then blam!! They have your subaru.. Be careful of those guys.. especially the ones in the bonney lake, buckley, sumner, orting area;)
  18. on an 80s subaru they are...unless someone moved it... Good thing this is a subaru in a subaru forum.. tracking down that chrysler fusible link would be a real bitch on his 81 GL wagon:D
  19. Less than an hour for a bump?.. relax.. some of us are in different time zones..(some of us actually sleep too) For a partial answer to your question, there are quite few places where coolant goes through the intake manifold. However, the combination of coolant bubbles and one cylinder at 60 psi, I would stick with the blown headgasket theory.. possibly adding the cracked head theory to the list because of the fact that your car probably has Gen 1 heads
  20. Heres a link to one of the threads showing the guy that put an EA82T into a 914. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11111&highlight=porsche Will searched to find the above threads for you . I searched to find this one thread for you.. Try the search feature. its fun, friendly and spiritually rewarding
