Question Concerning my 1.8L
A couple drops of oil are nothing to be worried about. Soobs leak. I don't know what I would do if mine didn't leak oil.. I wouldn't have anything to complain about.. can't have that now can we? Something fell off.. or you ran over a small piece of metal.. or you left your camera(or in my case, my metal coffee cup) on the roof and it chose that moment to fall off(my poor cup has tons of road rash) If all the important stuff is still there and its got all its fluids and isn't making any funny noises or running crappy, I wouldn't sweat it.

Need clutch info please -THANKS USMB guys
Pull the engine(at least partially) . Its easier, IMO than pulling the trans. How long it will take depends mostly on how good you are with a wrench. I undestand you to be pretty good, so I don't see any reason it should take more than 3 hours.. and thats if you stop for a beer half way through.

Buy outback buying ?
calebz replied to rweddy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRust isn't usually too much of an issue on newer soobs. The body panels are galvanized to prevent rust and it seems to work pretty well. 2.2 is the motor to have for reliability sake. The only way to be sure whether or noth there is rust is to look.

GL-10 Wagon Vs. Standard GL Wagon

Start with the obvious. If you don't know when the last time a tune up was done, do a tune up.. plugs, wires, cap, rotor.. the usual suspects.. Report back when you have completed that.

New 1st gen owner.. knows nothing
Without analyzing the vin, I can tell you a few things., it should have an EA71 1.6 flat 4 4sp single range 4wd( It works because they just don't break:D) I like the looks of the 78-79.. Its the 81-84 I don't like. There are other Gen 1 owners that can give you more detailed info. Congrats on a cool find.

Recomendations on rotting Subframe repair
They aren't too terribly hard to find as long as you don't need a Turbo Car.. those are a pain in the rump roast to find.

Recomendations on rotting Subframe repair
Drive it down here to Texas, go to the Pick'n' Pull and buy one with a good body/toasted engine/tranny.. spend the weekend with a local board member and swap the good stuff from the rustbucket into the yard car.. guaranteed to have no rust... Then have your old rustbucket hauled off to the yard.. a fun weekend, a few hundred bucks and you are good for another 10-20 nasty salty east coast winters.

can you tell me what yr. is my EA81?
So does that mean it has uncovered timing belts, or no belts to cover? It may sound like a silly question because you say you are asking about an EA81, but in 85, many soobs went over to the EA82.. Just trying to attain some clarity:D PS.. your name is floortom.. are you perchance a drummer?

'85 Subaru gl-10 wagon
UltimateRX is now DR RX.. he's alive and ... umm.. well( I suppose;) ) and very active on this board.. He sold the Ultimate RX to someone.. Its still a secret as to who acquired it.. I'm sure when it actually runs and is road worthy we will all be enlightened by the glory that is the ultimate RX. Congrats on an Easy fix. Those are the best kind.

'85 Subaru gl-10 wagon
Hey miles.. check out this magnificent quote from the original post Definitely not a timing belt issue. Do the dash lights stay on and flicker when the car is running?.. that would make me lean toward the alt.. When my ignition module in my disty died the lights would flash a little just before it stalled, soI am still leaning toward the ingnition module/coil idea.

'85 Subaru gl-10 wagon
D'oh! wrong terminology. Thanks for the correction Rob. I meant ingnitor module.. you would think I would know better since I just had to replace mine a few months ago.. for similar problems to what you are describing.. but the addition of the oddly acting dash lights throws lots of suspicion to the alternator as well.
