    WV trip

cool pictures... I like the ones of it being loaded, with luggage and rider on the roof... hehe... the bridge picture it great... and I love that you took the forester down the river... would love to get mine off road a bit more for some comfy forest time...
  2. I see lots of car trailers on craigslist... I'm sure there's a good option to get you both in the same vehicle for your road trips... they're not as much fun when you're in separate vehicles...
  3. that thing looks pretty sweet... nice and clean...
  4. that makes sense... and I did reduce the 5/8 and 5/16 hoses into a single 1/2 so that's got to be messing up the flow a bit... I guess the best thing to do would be to have 2 holes in the weber air filter the same size as the stock hoses and get rid of the reduction T... time for another trip to home depot... hehe...
  5. if you have a weak battery and alternator then you're not getting enough juice... revving it a little gets the alternator going and makes more juice and everything gets happier... could also be a bad ground... sounds like an alternator/battery issue...
  6. I have the same setup as you and haven't had any blue smoke... I took the 2 stock hoses that went to the subaru air filter and hooked them to the weber air filter... the driver's side already had the pcv line hooked into it... I simply made a T from pipe fittings at home depot and hooked them into the supplied weber air filter spot... since this is the same setup as stock I don't understand how it could be wrong... the stock system had both valve cover hoses going to the air cleaner, one on each side... maybe mine is ok because of the different diameter hoses... no idea...
  7. the typical 5 speed d/r is a 4WD, but you can get one from an RX that's AWD, but the gearing isn't as low so it's not as good for off-road...
  8. weird, my disty was hooked to the hitachi and when I put the weber on I stuck it on there... the only difference I could think of would be when the carb is choked... but I really have no idea... I left mine on the carb like it was...
  9. if you go to the old USRM from the Subarus of the 80s link at the top here then there are a couple links: Using Center Lamp without stock relay CenterLamp Install without stock relay
  10. wow, that's some dry ground... love the rock chasm... not too sure about taking my subie on the dunes... it doesn't need a sand-blasting... but the southern part of the state is on my list... need to see crater lake some day...
  11. I was admiring the exhaust system and skid plate... what'd you have to do to set up that shot? checked your photobucket, there's some good ones in there... ... wish I was in the area at the time to tag along... although I don't know where the bridgeport parking garage is...
  12. wow, those look really good... makes me wish I had mine powder coated...
  13. that's what I have... I thought about that, but since I shouldn't really need the cruise any more I just yanked it all out and will see if somebody else wants it for their car... I would have put more thought into it but the threaded end of my throttle cable through the cruise it broken to that I can't really tighten it... I'd have to get a new cable either way... so I decided to just get a non-cruise throttle cable and install that... works great...
  14. yeah, I was afraid of that... I've heard of people stripping the cruise out for their off-roaders... and a lot of people get webers for off-road... but I do love my luxury options... the cruise, the power steering, the power windows... guess I don't need the cruise THAT badly... mainly just for this upcoming trip from wisconsin to oregon... guess it'll just have to tug on the linkage a little and idle faster... not like I'll be stopping very often...
  15. I would think so... on the s/r you have the vacuum system to keep the 4wd engaged... on the d/r you have the linkage... either way that's the only real difference... and if you're going to do it I'd go for the solid feel of a lever to shift into 4wd rather than trust the vacuum...
  16. so nobody with a weber on their ea81 has cruise? I'm thinking I'll have to end up fabbing a bracket... not even sure the correct bracket is on mine now... which is why I was hoping for pics... I know I need a new throttle cable since the nut at the end rusted to the threads and now it can't be tightened and anchored properly... wasn't an issue before since it held itself in and reached the hitachi just fine...
  17. wow, that's in nice shape for having been moldy! not a great idea to swap the newer engine, as they were more problematic even though they had a few more horsepower... however, you could swap the fuel injection system over... but since it sounds like your carb is in good shape you don't really need to do that...
  18. I keep mine mostly on defrost with a little to the feet... this with the center dash vent allows air to flow all around... then I just adjust the heat dial for the season... for some reason I tend to keep the fan on a low setting even when I don't need it... I think it's the need for fresh air... and when it's really nice out I put all the windows down and blow the dog hair out... (:
  19. awesome find! I've always wanted to stumble upon one of those barn/yard finds myself... but usually the people have some emotional attachment or think they have a goldmine collector car...
  20. that's not horrible if it's city miles... highway miles that could be a little low... I know I've seen a few mileage threads around here... my '82 was getting about 20 around the city... but I just put a weber on it and haven't gone through a tank of gas yet...
  21. looks like fun... yeah, the powerwagon is cool... it's a beast... half of those aren't even trucks anymore, they're just cages... which one is a subaru?
  22. I'm thinking of getting a roof basket, but didn't want to have to remove the chrome roof rack on the ea81... but will stress rip the roof rack apart if I attach a basket to it? I know it's screwed on ok (it's the non-adjustable one), but it just doesn't seem THAT beefy... I just think it'd look nicer to have it attached to the existing rack instead of having to get towers and cross bars to mount it to... has anybody put a basket on their stock ea81 rack? got pics?
  23. so I swapped a weber on... runs great... no hesitation... however, I'm having an issue with the throttle linkage... I have cruise control and the short cable from the cruise box isn't long enough to reach the linkage from the stock cable holder... and the cable isn't long enough to reach the weber cable holder... I used the hitachi linkage on the weber... it just seemed right... nice and roundy, with a hole for the lead plug at the end of the cable... so right now I just have the cable unmounted... which works fine... but I'd rather have it secured somewhere... so what have other people with cruise control done with their cable and linkage when they've swapped to a weber? pics?
  24. best one yet... Northwest Offroo'd Team... or N.O.T. for short...
  25. the outbacks are pretty nice... the only thing to really watch out for on the 2.5 motors is the head gaskets... they're prone to failure... keep lurking on the New Gen forum and just read away... lots of knowledge to be absorbed...
