To get the dash out, you'll have to remove the misc parts in the dash, and then take the rest out as a whole. To swap carpet, you have to remove the seats and all the inner guts. It's not too bad. I had mine out when I rewired my stereo http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru/images/stereorewire/

Legacy Help
Legacy777 replied to aja573's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
So if the car is stopped and in neutral, and you rev the engine (gas pedal to the floor) the rpms won't go any higher then 3000? Have you tried checking the ECU for codes? www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/engine.html -
Please try and search. There are several threads that have good info. In fact this question was asked recently http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54448 You should be able to use a 98 MT. Being that your car is OBD2, you will run into some additional wiring issues, then what I dealt with on my swap.

I'm not sure what the final drive ratio is on the newer legacies, but the highest that the legacies have had is 3.90. I'm at about 3000 rpm at 80 mph....give or take. You won't really find a final drive less then that on most subarus (excluding the SVX). My recommendation would be to see if you can get a higher ratio for just 5th gear. I'm pretty sure there are some options out there. You may want to search http://forums.nasioc.com/forums or www.legacygt.com

The clutch style is different. You will need the clutch slave cylinder and possibly the clutch master cylinder & hyd. lines. You will also need to pull the speed sensor out, and put in the mechanical hookup so your speedometer will work.

Yeah, I'd recommend replacing the thermostat. Make sure you replace it with a subaru thermostat. The ones at autoparts stores will give you nothing but headaches. Also, the first gen legacies have a bleed screw on the passenger side of the radiator. That must be removed in order to properly bleed the air out of the cooling system.

The 2nd gen liberties had a complete makeover in terms of body styling. There were some mechanical. Either way, there's too many to try and list everything. Especially since down under, you guys were able to get the twin turbo models. You may also want to check out http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/index.php
