95 Impreza/93 Legacy Transmission Swap
Legacy777 replied to hawesey_t's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
They did make FWD's. They should be swappable. -
What year and model car???? I really would highly recommend against going one step colder plug on a relatively stock engine. Your gas mileage will be crap, the engine won't run as good, etc. If you truly think your car is "pinging" run higher octane fuel. If that makes no difference, then I don't think you're hearing any pinging. Can you describe what you are hearing/experiencing with some detail.

Exhaust ports are the same. You'll run into more issues with the electronics. The first gen legacies are OBD1, your forester is ODB2. There are some possible solutions, but it's not a "plug & play" type thing.

You shouldn't have to put the engine at TDC, you just need to make sure the timing marks on the pullies are aligned to how they're supposed to be aligned when doing the timing belt. I haven't done a DOHC timing belt, but on the SOHC ej22's, you just align the marks on the cam pullies, and crank gear, and swap the belt.

They should be interchangable. Changing the 95 over to a hydraulic clutch "shouldn't" be an issue. The clutch fork is different between cable & hydraulic. So you'll just need to take those parts from your 98 trans, and re-use them on the 95. Also, I believe the pivot ball for the clutch fork will need to be changed. There are two bosses in the transmission case. Look at both transmissions and verify the pivot is in the same spot, or if it's not, you'll need to move it. This may require you tapping the bosses. Only other thing to note would be speed sensors/speedo cable. I'm not sure if the 95 has a speed sensor, or uses a cable. I'm pretty sure it uses a speed sensor, so it shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise, you should be able to remove the cable and put in the speed sensor...
