  1. MY 98 forester with auto trans. I got this loud grinding noise only when engine reaches its operating temp(after driving 40 mins with 80F outside temp, AC off). The noise is present when I rev the engine rpm up in P and N, also present in D when drive around town. When I got home and ready to pop the hood(with the engine running ) to see where the grinding noise came from, the car no longer making noise:confused::confused: All the fluids are full and clean except power steering ATF( its dirty but no leaks). So what are the possibilities? Oil pump? Pulleys? Front diff? Trans? The car drives good without any warning lights on Please help
  2. I dig up the manual and found out that it can be adjusted thru 2 ways. 1)At the ECU side or 2)Using the select monitor Different from 92 SVX which you can probe the Volt meter into the TPS connector to see if you are at about .48 or .50V
  3. Good luck with it, I never seen anything like that either. I was about to suggest axle tool but I dont think it can beat the 12 ton press:eek:
  4. Nice. Please keep us posted. I really hope the engine will hold up without any problem. Good luck
  5. How do I adjust/check the throttle position sensor on MY 98 forester? Thanks
  6. Thanks. But are there any physical differences by just looking at them???
  7. The EJ22 in one of MY 95 legacy has a dual port exhaust and I thought MY95 and 96 have single exhaust port, so that lead me to think interference EJ22 has dual port exhaust:confused: Maybe someone before me replaced the engine with a interference from 97???
  8. How can I tell if an EJ22 is interference engine or not??? MY 95 vs MY97??? From exhaust ports?
  9. Did the exhaust smell rich or like rotten eggs? Change the CTS and see what happen? Could be cat converter??? Dont know much about CA smong test spec.
  10. I spend an hour looking for the part number of this O ring @ subaruparts.com but I couldnt find it. Anyone knows the O ring part number? Thanks
  11. I read about something like that, but the installation of the spark plug antifouler was at O2 sensor location. Not in the spark plug well. But again, I never hear of antifouler before this and I am open for any suggestion and advice:lol:. Maybe the antifouler is used by old style engine with carb engines???
  12. I also took the rest of spark plugs of the engine. They are autolit platium except one is NGK. I hate this kind of maintenance hack job:mad: But again, I got the car cheap so:grin: I will keep everyone updated on this issue. hopefully nothing major
  13. The trans is currently out of the car, so I cant really crank the engine for compression test. Will do after hook everything up. Thanks again
  14. Thanks for everyones suggestion!!! Got the antifouler out:banana:using screw extractor #5 I got from Harbor Freight. Came out easier than I thought:lol:. The thread seems to be OK. I didnt see any sign of cross threaded spark plug hole. I will get new NGK plugs and see what happen once I finish install the trans. So what can make a spark plug foul? Leaking injector, worn piston ring/oil control ring? Any suggestion?
  15. Would you run into balance problem when just replace front half of drive shaft?
  16. Did a quick search on google and its indeed the spark plug antifouler. Now I have no idea how to remove it and what also bug me why was it been installed at first place for the reliable EJ22 engine?
  17. Never heard of antifouler:confused: maybe the injector is leaking into cylinder? I will try to soak the area with PB blaster. How is this antifouler attached to the head? Do I turn the wrench clockwise to loose it??? Can you provide more details? I really appreciate everyones input!!!
  18. Sounds like its better/easier just to get a used head? The car is not ready to be driven yet, brought the car as is without trans, but once the trans/clutch is fixed, the car will be able to run on 3 or 4 cylinder to a machine shop to see if they can do redo the hack job???
  19. Ready to replace the plastic leaking seperator plate and there is this part next to crankshaft rear main and it just started to leak oil. What is this part? And how was it sealed(RTV, O ring or gasket) Thanks
  20. Got the 96 OBW manual(bad trans) as a project car 1 week ago( have not hear how the engine run since I got it ). While getting ready to buy the clutch kit, I look thru the engine bay and this is what I see. Look like the spark plug crossed threaded at one time and who ever did this just put in some kind of adaptor to let the spark plug seat(instead of repair it properly with helicoil) :mad:And when I remove the spark plug boot, the end of the boot is all burned out My questions 1)Do I need a cylinder head? 2)I dont know if I can remove it, it seems in the well pretty tight. Any tip or trick to remove it? 3)Any advice? Thanks a lot!!!
  21. It was indeed a rubber gasket/oring. I simply use one of the oil filters gasket/oring from a toyata filter. Fit perfectly and no leak now.
  22. I had a similar experience with a MY 93 impreza. I dont remember the details since it was more than 5 or 6 years ago. Anyway, the impreza was installed with after market remote entry/start system. But it was not done right, the wiring shorted out and it kept blowing a fuse(I forgot which one) Check the wiring by the left kick panel and all your relative fuse. Good luck
  23. i wont be worry about the oily paste/crap on the drain plug, its the chunks that came out i will be concerned:eek:
