  1. So are there maps or something availible from BLM so you can tell where it's legal to go? We've got thousands of acres in Oregon that is private property, but with absolutely no developement on it, no signs, and the owners live hundreds of miles away, which creates the problem. How can you tell?
  2. There's got to be someone who's put a Cherry Bomb onto a stock EA82 here. What does it sound like? Any recommendations? I hate my muffler. Too quiet.
  3. ...is something I try not to do. But sometimes I just don't know if you're allowed to go somewhere or not. Of course, owners should post signs in obvious places, but they don't always do it. So, my question is how can you tell for sure if some spot in the woods/desert is OK to drive on or not? And, if you go offroad where it's not allowed, but there's no way to know it, is it even (legally) your fault?
  4. Anybody know where I can find out what the official names of colors on older Subarus were? I saw a metallic green Loyale with these really cool yellow stripes, and I wanted to know what color my "black" Loyale really is. Also thinking about repainting my car since it's getting pretty chipped up.
  5. All right, I'm back! I saw a light blue wagon in a dirt driveway in CA or NV (can't remember if it was EA81 or 82 or what city) but I could swear it belonged to a board member. I did some prety fun trail driving/creek crossing (with 5 passengers and luggage) between Bryce Canyon and Antimony. Saw some VW powered buggies with surprised-looking drivers. Well, after a few hours I got tired of driving 55 and ended up doing 70-75 most of the way. I actually paid less for gas everywhere along the way that I do at home! Got home, washed the car since I did some donuts on the salt flats (nobody told me there was mud under the salt!) didn't have any problems except for having to add 1qt of oil. I love my Suby. It rocks.
  6. Reno, then SLC, antimony. http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&un=m&cl=EN&ct=NA&rsres=1&1a=&1c=medford&1s=or&1z=&2a=&2c=antimony&2s=ut&2z=Surprised that many people here have actually heard of Antimony. Only $3.10? Wow! I was going to get gas tomorrow morning, but decided to get it tonight, because my uncle, who is in touch with truckers, says it's going to go up $0.12 tomorrow because of that refinery that got wiped out. I went to a gas station. The dialouge went: "We only got super" "Well, do I pay the super cost?" "Uh... yeah" "See you later then" Yikes! Good thing I got paid today. I don't watch the news and today was the first I'd heard of the massive flood. Holy crap, this is like 9/11 scale stuff. There was a dead guy on the side of the freeway and the cops were passing him because they were trying to save the saveable.
  7. I appreciate the responds, guys. That's one thing I like about the USMB. Big, friendly community (usually). Unfortunately, I don't have enough time off to make stops in Reno and the Grand Canyon like I originally planned, although I would like to tour the country someday meeting fellow USMBers. I don't expect to have any trouble with the Sub, just wanted some kind of back up plan.
  8. On September 2 at around 8:00 PM I'll leave Medford, OR headed to a ranch in Antimony, UT (recently featured on Jay Leno). There are several ways to get there; Mapquest suggests Going through Reno, then SLC, on to Antimony. I've been a passenger on this route maybe 5 times and I know it's a lot of long, straight, hot roads. I would rather to go to Reno, then Black Rock, then Antimony, but I've never taken that route. Does anybody know those roads well? I'd like to stay in the 55mph zones as much as possible because 2500RPM is nicer that 3500. I'm doing this on an extremely tight budget, I can't bring many spare parts, but this is probably the last time my whole family will get together (we've outgrown the ranch) so I'm bent on getting there. Cross your fingers and wish me luck! Also, my stubborn pride prohibits me from asking for a bail-out if I break down, but an offer for a little help is never refused.
  9. I tapped the brakes on a hill in the 92 4WD Loyale and nothing happened. I know nothing about hill holder, does my car even have it? How do I adjust it?
  10. 1. Hack saw off muffler and cat (if legal) 2. Weld (JB Weld and C-clamps if too poor) on $20 Cherry Bomb glass pack (directed to the side of car for maximum coolness) 3. Have fun with the improved handling and braking that go along with a louder exhaust (rice joke)
  11. Wow. The Dodge one looks fake to me, look around the edges. The thought of that car being smashed is nice though.
  12. If those poo stabbers refuse to sell it whole, then maybe you or someone else in the area could snag the engine w/turbo while it's still complete?
  13. There's a big problem with hybrids. Aside from all the as of yet unknown things that can go wrong with them... Hybrids are made to pollute less. Honda and Toyota making them suggests that one day they will convert the whole line to fully electric, leaving Prius and Insight owners with half-"evil polluters" and half prototype motor driven cars that nobody wants. Just a thought.
  14. Why would you add extra oil to a rebuilt? Do they like to eat it in break-in?
  15. I did my first oil change on the Loyale today, and what a pain in the arse that car is. I couldn't get to the plug because of the skid-plate so I had to take that off first. I found a chunk of mud between the plate and oil pan that weighed about 2 pounds, I guess the heat vulcanized it or something because it was blackened and I couldn't break it. Then couldn't find my '88 owners manual, so I just put 3 quarts in. Who knows how much it holds? And when I find my '88 manual, could I go by that since '88 cars could have EA82s too? On the plus side, the Sub has the easiest to get at oil filter I've ever changed.
  16. The best safety equiptment on an old *Bimmer are your feet and hands
  17. Power steering fluid is fine... radiator fan's been removed... didn't make the noise today. Maybe just a visiting gremlin?
  18. Ask any pro driver and they will assure you that the proper way to break in an engine is not to break it in. Turn the car on, put it into first, or D, then step on the gas right away. Under no conditions should you let the oil get up to normal pressure levels or tempurature. Shift at no less than 4500 RPM and brake at the last minute so that your front wheels turn a nice dull-red color from brake dust. *The following was the exact opposite of what you should actually do, unfortunately, most people don't know or care.
  19. I drove the 92 Loyale to WinCo a couple hours ago and while it was warming up it made noises that sounded like an electric drill press at high RPM. It went away when the engine RMP settled down to 750 but did it again off and on while I was driving. It didn't sound to me like a belt squeaking and I forgot to open the hood and look (it was dark anyway) Has anybody expiereinced this before? I also think I smelled friction, kinda like the smell my old Camaro used to make when I would dump the clutch.
  20. Isettas had 4 wheels, the back two were just really close together.
  21. Hey, my thing got deleted. Guess I'll vote then. My vote goes to the 87 RX street legal AutoXer.
  22. Put cyanide in all berry bushes within 20 miles, it could be a family fun weekend projet.
