Every time I go wheeling I am re-amazed at how incredible these cars are. Do the Japanese have anywhere to drive where a car as hardcore as the Subaru is needed? So anyways, I goes up to Anderson Butte today to ride my bike, which I built specifically for that mountain (although you wouldn't know by looking) and it had snowed a lot, like a foot. On my way up, a guy in a dually Ford was towing a trailer down the mountain, so I pulled over into a snow bank to give him plenty of room to pass. His tires (all 6 of em) are spinning faster than the truck, fronts pointed left, truck still going straight. Being nice, he stopped and offered to pull me out backwards if I couldn't get out, (I did bury the Soob pretty good) but that wasn't neccesarry. I have d/r and 205/70/R15 studded snow tires that hit the fender wells when fully turned. Near the top, there's massive hills made up of broken rock and hard packed gravel, covered in snow. The steepest angle I climbed was maybe 30 degrees, and only one wheel spun a little bit. No LSDs here. After that, I tried to climb the same hill on my bike, couldn't do it. Then I tried it on foot, still couldn't do it. But the Sub made it up just fine. I am going to miss this car when I move. I'll built up a lifted EA82 instead Subarus for the win!!!1 __ __/ / / / / O/ <----- thats my car car, can ya tell? / / / /___ /O /

So, if you're going down the freeway at 70mph, what is your RPM in a Legacy? Auto same as 5spd? ----- I hear about "limp mode"... sounds scary. What causes the car to do this and is hard to fix? And if the oppurtunity to get a RHD Legacy shows up, are they any different that LHD ones? Do Leg's eat axles? Is the AWD full time, or is it sometimes 100% FWD? Tell me everything, I must know!

Why do *YOU* prefer old gens?
SakoTGrimes replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1. better looking 2. well engineered opposed to over engineered 3. unique opposed to bland and conforming 4. off-road capable as opposed to.... not 5. reliable-er, see #2 -
2nd gear synchro going out
SakoTGrimes replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I'm only going to have this car for another 8 months at the most, so 'spensive oil and super slow shifting will have to do. -
Recently going from 1st to 2nd is grinding bad unless I do it careful and slowly. Can I buy a syncrho? It's a little rubber thing, right?

Crap! 83 GL won't start - Corvallis
SakoTGrimes replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
w0 f***** 0t! My dad's freend played around with some wires, a little U-shaped thing called a "jumper" on the right side rear engine bay got wet and came loose. Plugged it back in, the fan and lights came on and it started no problem! I was about to give someone a great deal too. Letting it run right now to make sure it's real nice and dry. I think waterproofing will be m next significant investment! -
Crap! 83 GL won't start - Corvallis

I just got back. I used a crescent wrench and it moved fine, with the plugs in. I'm thinking my ignition switch might have gone out because a few years ago that happened in my Camaro and I could start it by putting a conductive object between the 2 wires on the starter. I tried that and it turned over like it normally would, but still no startup. Key was on and someone helped me by pumping the gas pedal. I'm out of ideas for the moment. -

Both wires are connected to the starter. Where is the crank pulley and what size is it? -

OK, so i went back an hour ago. fuses all look good, didnt see water in oil, but i wasnt going to drain and refill it in the parking lot either. Wiped off spark plug ends and inside of disty cap, horn and rear lights work, still no turnover -
My GL has a golf ball in place of the hi/lo lever and I don't like it. I've twisted as hard as I could with a death grip but it wouldn't budge. Tried the same with a couple stock handles at junkyards, no luck. Twist clockwise maybe? A solvent?

So I went through about a foot and a half of water a little faster than I should have, and it made the engine want to die out for a minute, then it idled OK but the tach was jumpy at idle and was reading around 600 rpm too high while driving. Went to get gas, car started up fine, then I went to WinCo and when I tried to start again, the headlights flashed very briefly then nothing. Distributer cap is try, battery is charged, I don't think the carb is flooded. No turn over, nothing. Does it just need to dry out? I'll go back tomorrow and see. -
Front wheel drive subys aren't bad either...
SakoTGrimes replied to EA82Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How nice of those [roosters] to help you out. It might have been that the sudden throttle caused the rear of the car to lift and give the front tire traction. Pretty cool for a 1WD either way -
Why do people hate Loyales?
SakoTGrimes replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I love Loyales and miss my 92 very much. It had power crap, but never failed to start (until the cam pulley thing) and had a great heater+great looks. I want to buy another one when I get to AZ. -
Engine revving up without input
SakoTGrimes replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, carbed 83 GL. I was driving and I noticed that the car was keeping speed (25-30 or so) without the gas pedal and that's when I clutched and the engine revved up. -
A while back when it was freezing I pumped the gas pedal to the floor a few times before starting and when the engine started it revved up to 2K for a few minutes, just like my Loyale did to warm itself up. That part was OK, but weeks later when I pushed the clutch in it revved up to 4K and was still climbing (no gas pedal) so I put it in 4th to bog stop it. I made sure the throttle wasn't sticking, there was no input, just did it by itself. ???

disconnecting 4wd
SakoTGrimes replied to 95 super subbie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, you could convince the event organizers to just trust you not to push that little magic red button, so you wouldn't have to remove stuff (Demo cars should be heavier anyway, right?) Or you could scrape off all the 4WD decals and cheat, although someone with a good eye might see the rear wheels spinning. -
warming up?
SakoTGrimes replied to 97OBW's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I always let my car warm up fully before driving. 4-5 minutes in the day and 7+ at night depending on the temp outside. I learned to do this when I got my first car with an oil pressure gauge, it would shoot all the way up if I just turned on and drove. Warming up uses hardly any gas and your engine will last longer. -
Snow is even more funner.
