  1. There are no solenoids under the dash. Those are relays. NONE of them operate the starter.
  2. The loose wire was in my head. Was thinking last night about what Dave said about the black wire. That's the one I overlooked. Hooked it up this morning and it turns over. Test drive is next.
  3. Looks like the AFM is the "flapper" style. Was only used in the 85/86/87 models. Also can tell if it is from one of these years is to look at the thermostat housing. Fairly sure the distributor changed in 1988. Cylinder heads the weak link. 3 versions used over the years. Early version tended to crack.
  4. BRAT - Slider open , dog in bed. Topper with side windows but on the east coast or anywhere they are harder to find in functional condition. I shipped a topper like that to folks in CO once. $$$!!!! Hunt out the Brat with a topper. Long term it’ll hold value. Two door - the dog will only kill it , even if a good dog. Good luck !
  5. There is no relay in the starting circuit of these cars. The only solenoid is on the side of the starter motor, it throws the pinion gear forward to engage the flywheel.
  6. Thanks for the reply GD. Gave Lithia Subaru a call and Matt answered, he said the part number for a '82 GL Brat Clutch Cable is 737026032. Ordered through my local dealer, in 3-4 business days the Brat should be back in business.
  7. Starter ground to bell housing? Maybe forgot to slide bolt thru the ground cable when finished with clutch job?
  8. On the back of the starter there is a small wire. Unplug it, and get 12v to the terminal on the starter, to verify that the starter cranks. These cars did not have a starter relay, and it is common for one of several connections or switches in the circuit that feeds the wire mentioned above to become high enough resistance to make the startery not engage. Although, this usually begins as an intermittent click no crank problem.
  9. Looks pretty clean! You and I might be about the only ones with old FWD Subies
  10. New to the forum! I picked up my first Subaru in April: '84 GL sedan. It's the definition of poverty-spec and I assume one of very few FWD models anyone bothered to keep going this long. There's some rust along the rockers and a few other kinks still to work out, but it's exactly my kind of car and I'm enjoying it so far. It's one-owner and 100% original, with plans to keep it that way.
  11. Just picked up this 1982 GLF Hardtop the other day. Very little rust, but needs some serious interior work, which I happen to have a bunch of parts for from an old Brat. It pays to hoard I guess.
  12. Stunning. That's fantastic. I just finally brought this guy to the city - parked up near the GWB
