  1. Lookin good! Before you paint it... may I suggest a couple more triangles where the steel meets and turns corners? Wouldnt take long, and youd thank yourself if you ever hit something. My .02
  2. Actually, the tractor is my Dads. I was changing engines like underwear for a while there, and was getting sick of "owing him one" every time I borrowed it. :-\ My brat is much more nimble anyway
  3. Ok boys and girls, At last its here.... the perfect solution to the age old problem. How do you pull an engine out of a car in the "back 40" ?? Here she is.... the fully mobile, rough-terrain engine hoisting system. Adjustable angle of the swing arm via increase/decrease of chain length.... and the winch does all the work! (all handily removable with a couple of pins and clips for on-road use) *sigh*
  4. To answer your question, when it starts "spreading out" from multiple oil changes... it is almost to the point of splitting. SPLITTING = BAD Just do what I do... match your crush gasket to a copper one, and just keep flipping the copper gasket each time.
  5. I have the same style ammo can as bed-storage in MY brat! Good job!
  6. First off, I LOVE the leather BAJA seats in my BRAT! What makes em great though is when you attach em to the floor with "wing bolts" for quick removal. Need extra seats at the next fireworks show and DONT wanna sit in the vehicle? NO PROBLEM. Running the winch on my brat goes hand in hand with heavy DRAW, so I wired up DUAL BATTERIES. no biggie. But I also do LOTS of camping... and so decided to hard-wire a power inverter to my batteries via a relay... and mounted it right in the cab. Now I have 120V wherever I need it! Helps when you NEED to grind fresh coffee on the trail and run the coffeemaker I found the analog thermo-gauge on the dash to be insufficient, and so wired up a digital gauge that feeds right from the coolant lines off the block. = temperature readings to the 10th of a degree (in real time) I also discovered that a compact set of old computer speakers mounted under the radio (in front of the shifter) keeps things high and dry when wheeling and water crossing. They keep the tunes flowing long after the wet door speakers were dead and gone. Ive done the 2WD HI/Lo mod as well... but lots of folks have. (highly recommend) Ive welded my jumpseats frame to a piece of corrugated steel, and welded 14mm nuts into the bed. Now I can bolt my jumpseats in or out in a FLASH!
  7. U joints will do it every time. Crawl under there and shake that driveshaft like your strangling a cobra. If theres any side to side clunking.... change em out!
  8. I have spent my share of time cursing out those little white plastic pop-nuts myself. The ones for the tail lamps were never the issue on my brat. The ones that hold the grille/fascia on the FRONT of the brat were a PITA though. The idea stopped dead in its tracks when (on a whim) I brought a sample piece to my local CarQuest. THEY MATCHED IT! Very best of luck.
  9. Rockauto Search under 1983 station wagon IIRC They used to be dirt cheap
  10. Not that it helps a WHOLE lot... (but I have to brag) I actually ordered the LAST NOS D/R plate from SOA last year. Anybody interested?
  11. Ok Briggs: Here I am posting! (better run) I had a great time at the cookout as well, and it was great meeting Rob finally. GOOD BURGERS!!!
  12. NOT cool! I have yet to do a flight on a commercial airline... and when I do it will be carry-on only. :-\ Good luck man!
  13. We know. I was kindof thinking it was a "party till Connie tells us to leave" type of gathering (lunch/dinner etc) ...but that is up to Connie of course. Connie : What say ye?!
  14. Geek. jk Hey Connie: just an idea... if you end up having to BUY wood, dont. I can bring a truckload (bratload) with me when Jess and I come.
  15. Lookin good Connie! You may think that LB doesnt look so nice all stripped down... but take it from a guy who sees this daily, that car is CLEAN. Ive seen the odd 2006 with more rust. You know, I think this every time I work on your car, but TRULY this is a rare opportunity on the east coast... To work on an EA81 like its 1983 again. Gotta love it!
  16. +1 vote for the brat! (I had to) I *almost* voted for the hatch, as that is gonna be my next project... but brats are too unique. (I will be curious to see who the runner-up is)
  17. Connie, You know the rules for every subaru meet... (and its always true) -Somebody doesnt show that said they would - Somebody comes who didnt say they werent gonna -Somebody comes in on the hook AND -SOMEbodys car gets worked on Just gotta wait and see what happens!
  18. Its never bothered MY 4-spd, and I run in low all the time. (2WD lo) I did the 2WD LO mod on my lifted brat about 2 years ago. With my 29's I NEEDED it! Anyway, I have found that 1st lo IS excellent for starting off without having to slip the clutch. However, there ARE perks to using LO in the higher gears that were not apparent at first. For long, steep hill climbs for instance... Lo range 2wd gives you "shorter" gears, and with that some considerable advantage. For accelerating on long flats, HI range 2wd is best as it gives you taller gearing, therefore FASTER accel.
  19. Where's Psycho? Briggs: this looks like YOUR yard!
  20. Not to jinx you, but I would be willing to bet the rod bends at one of the welds... since the steel has lost some temper from the welding there.
