MOAB meet April 15, 16, 17.

S'ko, you're still coming? I hope you can get your Brat running good. It's on 14's at least, right? Even if you bring the OBS there's some great stuff that you and yer wife will dig. I still want to go. Wife is alittle apprehensive about driving the 11 hours in the Brat. I have to pass smog first with the Brat. Then everything else will be ok. NO. unfortunately I am running stock wagon wheels. I did want to fab a lift kit, but the main thing is time. I could go on a welding binge and try to get it all put together. Sorta torn in the direction I want to build the Brat. Just found out that there is a rallyX series being held locally. Would like to use the BRAT for that, but problem is I am in the Street Stock 4WD drive class. I would get my butt kicked b/c I am going against stock WRX's. hmm.. 1.8 carb motor vs. 2.0 turbo.... The other direction is 6 inch lift and 28 inch wheels. Regardless I will not get things done by the time Moab hits. So will probably be running stock. Can cruise with you and check things out and go along the bypasses. OBS currently is not registered b/c I have two tickets on my license and it costs me $250.00 per month in insure. SWEET82. Dude I haul my butt all the way to Utah and you flake. Sheesh... You'd better -
Welcome. Glad to see the BRAT are being taken care of. BW

Here a stab at answering. I assume you mean rear differential. Open/AWD (rear diffs in AWD are mostly open) PRO: Stock set up, plentiful supply CON: limited off-road abilities Applications: Stock set up, trail-mild off-roading LSD Pro: Better off-road traction Con Hard to find, May have wrong gear ratio Applications: auto/rally cross, mild-hard off-roading Welded Pro: BEST off-road traction Con: Requires removal of axles for street use, breaks parts due to added stress Application: Hard Core off-roading,

Hmm.. I remember seeing an episode of Junkyard MegaWars where this British Team used a Cherokee as their rig. They build these small ramps to help them go over the rough stuff. Looks exciting and fun. Do we have a roll call for who is planning to go and what they are driving? I will be coming with my wife. I have an unlifted BRAT. Although I may take my OBS. -
looks like the ground clearance is 6.1" http://www.cars101.com/subaru_archives.html click on the appropriate years. It would problaby be lower since the weight of your Legacy is more than a WRX.

Jeep Wagoneers also run a 6 X 5 1/2

Sorry to hi-jack this thread. is there a decent number of Subie addicts in Charlotte? I will be there for a wedding on July 3rd, but I am eventually going to move down there in a few years.

*dances* Some GL Wagon questions

Don't forget that the wheel could also fall off.... BW -
Anyone ever tried making this on a soob? here is a great article on four-link suspension making. part 1 http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/suspension/131_0306_link/ part 2 http://4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/suspension/131_0307_link/index2.html This seems to offer great articulation and travel for a solid axle truck. (THIS IS ALL THEORETICAL, DO NOT CONSIDER THIS A HOW-TO.) So for a independent set up a subframe could be make to mount the diff and connect it to the wheel housing with semi-rigid metal. (Like a leaf spring) this would essentially make the rear almost like a solid axle. The rear diff would move with the bumps and then on extreme movements that axle could move up and down. You may have to beef up the springs to compensate for holding up the diff. Like I said this is a theory and I lack the expertise to fabricate something like this. I would like to see if it could be done so when I do get the skills/tools I can attempt it. BW

Old Gen vs. New Gen seems to be this: Old Gen wrench and tinker and do the mods themselves and know a whole lot about their rides. Ingenuity and DIY are the rule of thumb New Gen plunk money to a tuner and pay for every little performance mod they have. Money and the ablility to swipe a charge card are the rule of thumb. Of course they don't respect. It's b/c they do not understand what you have accomplished. I think you increased your HP from stock to 160 right? That's roughly a 50% gain in HP. Tell them that you took a WRX and increased the HP to 340 by yourself w/o a shop and they will drool all over themselves. Keep up the good work and know that your ride w/all the mods cost a fraction of what they paid for theirs. Ohh.. and you can continue to spank those honda ricers and stuff b/c if Soob owners are clueless, they are definately clueless. Keep the faith brother and know that we are rooting for you. BW

new to site....oil leak prob. on '86
s'ko replied to jamoz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome to the board. Yes soobs are notorious for leaking. Now for the intake I am not sure what he's talking about. Likely places for oil leaks are 1) Oil Pump seals 2) Front main seal 3) Valve covers 4) Oil Pan 5) Rear main seal The first three you can do w/o removing the engine. Valve cover seals being the easiest. What part of the engine is the oil coming? BW -

Congrats on the RX!!! Glad that it's running again. BRAT is running ok. I have to get the exhaust sealed up and the car is leaking oil like crazy. I need to get the oil pump seal kit. I think that should resolve the leaking oil. -

I might be in town July. My wife's sister is getting married on July 2nd in Charlotte, North Carolina My brother is trying to plan a family vacation to the Outer Banks, but that may not work. If not then we will be going over to DC to spend the 4th of July there. I was so tempted by that BRAT in Radford. But I thought it would be a waste to get a soob that I could only fondle once or twice a year. BW -
Hows the selection of parts? Can you inventory what they have there? Thanks BW

spend atleast one week a year in Fairfax VA. Usually during the Christmas time. -
I found this in the Craiglist for DC. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/car/55001598.html three free XT-6's in various conditions. See if there are still there. Looks like 5 lug swap material and at least 3 alternators. bW

I am a tentative yes. Trying to get another friend of mine w/a BRAT to make the trek to. Will need more definate info about where and when. Also need to fix the oil leak on the BRAT. BW -
I guess the main question you have to ask yourself is will the soob engine give you the level of performnace as a suzuki swap. If the gains are worth the extra work and headache, then go for it. (Unless you just want to have one b/c that's what you want.) We off-road soobs b/c we want to. Even though Jeeps and other 4X4 rigs have more aftermarket support and performance goodies. We believe that the extra time and effort to mod a soob by lifting it or other DIY mods are worth it. If you are going to do a swap like this and are going EFI, an EJ engine would be just as complicated and give you more power and aftermarket support. But then again you have the EA82 motor handy. Just take measurements and then determine if you have the skills/money to get what's needed done. BW
