Yes we definitely want pics of the process. Always nice to see a complete build.

Nice.

That sucks. Sometimes a little self preservation needs to kick in BEFORE going for the action shot. Kinda why I like my long, lower center of gravity wagon. Could still happen, but a little less chance.

Cool. Alot of the camera work was just setting it on a rock, hitting record, running back to the car and driving by it cause you don't have any one up to film. hehe. Tends to give ya neat low angles though. Need to get brave enough to put it in the middle of a trail at an obstacle so I can get a drive over shot of the chassis doing it's thing. But that will be the time I bottom out and smash the camera. I just know it.

Yeah 'll proly be out this winter in it. And I've stayed away from any good mud cause I have no way to pull my car out if I stick it. I'm fixing that with this pay check this week.

Nothing too spectacular. Stock GL (and in it's factory color at Wilcat Mt.), lots of dirt and rocks. The Goat Mt. one was fun. Kinda did an automotive feeble grind on the way back down.

October 7th at Hillsboro. Who's gonna play? (last ORG RallyX of the season)
TeamCF replied to eurowrx's topic in Rally/Racing
Wish i could. Try to get to all of them. Gonna be out of town. -
I would think most good 4WD shops should have 'em. (Or can get them for ya) I see Jeeps out in the woods all the time with shovels 'n' stuff mounted to them. Maybe even a GI Joes (I know it's "JOES" now but I wont give in:lol: ) Or an REI might have them, or something very similar. I would just print that pic out and take it to show them.

As far as I know next weekend would be great. Pretty sure I have no other things going on. Even if I did have other plans I usually still get out for some wheelin' most weekends anyway. The weekend after I'll be out of town though (10-6&7th). Gonna miss the next RallyCross.

Good luck finding the cause of the noise. It does sound like a CV issue though. Just redid both sides on mine. I have a few noises of my own as well. Hitting bumps causes the left front to make a hollow metallic "loose part" sound. And accelerating in low gears gives me a quiet "knock knock" sound from the same wheel that speeds up with road speed. (Thought maybe my CV boot hose clamp started hitting, but no) Everything seems tight, wheelbearings are new, and some days no noises at all..... So I know how frustrating tracking them down is. I just call the booming from my roof "The GL war drum".

I had to do both sides on mine. Was able to get the parts at a local parts store. If I remember right it was under $10 for both. There is a trick to it to make sure you tension the front diff bearings properly. It helps if you have the special tool but I just made one out of an old chunk of the right sized exhaust pipe. You'll see what I'm talking about once you look at it more. I beleive this is the link I was given when I did mine. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78975

Went up to the goat mt. area. Found lots of nice trails. More than I could go down in one day. Ended up running across "Michael appel" off the board. And he showed me around some, like how to get up to the top of the mountain, which rocked. Gonna definetly go up there many more times to try and hit all the trails. But until then here are a few pics. The lake I guess you are not supposed to go to (according to the sheriff). There were no signs or gates, just a road leading right to it. The "flex rock" had to get a pick of the Subie and the Land Cruiser which was my guide. It was getting dark and I forgot to put the camera on auto so it turned out kinda blurry. (Plus it's a $40 digi cam great for out in the woods) Same rock other side. I have some vid footage of me doing a rutted climb (and decent kinda sideways) up near the top 'o the mountain. I'll have to put it up and link to it somewhere. Ok heres a vid of various clips I have.

loyale cv boot replacement help
TeamCF replied to captainkf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think when we take our cars off-road over uneven terrain it streches the boots farther than they like on our cars, hence the shotened life. But it's so much fun taking a family wagon out on the trails that I just look past it and enjoy the looks of confusion on the Jeep guys faces. I have an old EA81 and have just recently done all four boots up front. I used the stainless hoseclamps. Seems to hold the boots quite nicely, and I have not noticed any vibration on the highway. I also on the small end of the boot, clamped it down a little farther out (just about 1/2 inch towards the actual CV joint from the grove in the axle) so that when fully extended the boot is not quite as streched. Seems to work ok. I even went out and bought the tools for both styles of CV clamps and they STILL would not hold. -
Oh man. That sucks. Wishin' I could have made it.

As far as I know all we got was the first little boxes. And everyone just seems to have drove them till death. I found some on used car lots in Portland several years back but thier conditon was not so good. I see one driving around every so often. But it's getting rare. I always thought it might be fun to have one just for the hell of it.

No problem. I've gotten bummed about running in a class I didn't want to run in too. Took the moldy (no door seal, it was bad) interior out of my RX7, put me in modified, rest of the car is stock, tires are half worn out street tires. But we're drifting off topic kinda now.

Good point. I was shopping for a Yugo at one point. Just wanted one for some reason. But could not find one that was actually maintained at all, they were all ran into the ground.

Horrible news, Colin McRae dies in Helicopter Crash
TeamCF replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Rally/Racing
They have too much NASCAR to air to get to it..... -
True. Guess I was using the "modified" term too loosely.

Yeah the coil is fine, I was just going over anything that could be it. My tach and misses were caused by the dist, about 1/8 inch play. I picked one up from a u-pull it that has good bushings and used it and my old one to build a good one. Gonna get the old one rebushed and build it as a spare. Also put new cap, rotor, wires on (the plugs were already new) and no more missing ignition! Runs quieter too. Did the reving and blocking the carb thing (I used the bottom of a pop can, seals the carb off nicely) and some Seafoam. That seems to have helped a ton. In the process of replacing old dried up vacuum lines. No leaks have been discovered yet though. Took it out off-road tonight and it acted up once, didn't stall, just idled low and rough. But after a minute it was fine. I'm thinking the carb just may still have a chunk of something in it. Guess it's rebuild time. And I'm being lazy and still neglecting to put the new fuel filters on that I bought. Gonna do that this week.

For the price you could get some real rally tires. (and proly a cheap spare set of wheels to put them on)http://www.taborrallyteam.com/silverstone/silverstone.html But then you would have to run in a modified class. So if you're looking to stay in stock class then those do look like they could be good. Just gotta watch out as some events even look at agressive street tires as modified. Check what the maximum tread gap requirements are where you race.

expanding foam bodywork, you know you've done it
TeamCF replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Exactly. It was for the magazine but the car was right off the lot. (They had a body shop do it I believe) If I did that to my GL. It would proly rot faster unless I had the shell acid dipped and preped first. And I'm not tearing down my entire car just for that. I'll save that for a full on race car project that I can't afford. -
EA81 distributor, rebuild or replace?
TeamCF replied to TeamCF's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah they have several older subes in there. Most of the distributors I ran accross were of the Nippon variety (checked the markings on a couple). Can't say exactly what year/engines, and exact condition though, but a few looked clean. If it didn't look like mine I passed right by pretty quick. (kinda easy to tell by the way the vacuum advance looks) The one I got had the cap off so I only had to clean out the inside some. But other than that it is in great shape. I thought I had a rod knock too. Guess it was just my sloppy dist. I mostly noticed it at start up though. Seems to be gone now. Time will tell but I'm way farther ahead than I was so far.
