EA81 Head gaskets..again?
audio_file replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like you're havin' a tough time connie . . . sorry (rock goin' down the one-way road, LB bein' a bit more fun than you'd planned). i'm there too. the weather finally gets better here in seattle for the summer, and i'm really bummed about not havin my G35 anymore, missin' those fun summer drives and shows. back-in-black's stuck in the garage on stands because i don't have the $ to grab the cams i want before i can put the heads back on . . . so its just me and my soobiewagon, which just isn't cutting the cheddar as a "cool guy" summer car. :-\ for what it's worth, once LB is done, you are going to forget about all the days like this and just enjoy the heck out of that car, because it'll be practically new!! chris -

check for vacuum leaks at the carb too (the ol' carb cleaner mist/spray test) my carbed wagon had a very similar issue and it turned out i had a out-of-view and unplugged vacuum hose at the carb causing the issue chris -
amen. i've got too many stories to tell about an 87 wagon (pretty much stock) that goes places it shouldn't be able to . . . i love mine too! as long as you look on the west coast, you'll have parts 4eva chris

coupla pics from me, jeff IN his brat clickonpics and my car, this morning, 5 days later  i love all the looks from 'Yota drivers i get as i fly past them down I-5 at 75mph . . . don't think my apartment management company loves me so much though, i bet they're still working on a way to nicely ask me to put my car in my garage instead of in front of it, they probably get asked about it every time they show an apartment. . . (" . . .you guys let everybody move in here or what?!") chris

no worries, just a tough day glad the OP got it fixed too chris -
subies often leak from their valve cover gaskets . . ."its what makes a subaru, a subaru" assuming your independant used good gaskets, it's still not outside of the relm of possibility that they now leak . . . it's just a design/engineering issue, and until the leaking does get annoying (too much on the patio, somehow leaks onto exhaust and causes smell, etc.) you don't NEED to have anything done about it. (because it'll just start doing it again, in another 10k ) chris

To replace oil pan...pull engine??

. . . i recommend duct tape FTW! just kidding i don't know if anything will stick to such a greasy surface, just tow it if it's only 3 miles, thats easy . . . thats a pretty nice sized dent, and the oil pickup starts at the front and bends it's way back and gets pretty close to the bottom of the pan, so yeah, i'd go ahead and grab the other if you can't get back to it later . . . otherwise just wait till you drop the pan and see. . . i think odds of needing to replace it are 70% chris -

audio_file replied to subieman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
exactly ^ you'll have to twist the oil-pan to get it free of the oil pick up, it's kind-of like a puzzle "how the f does this come off?!" not that big of a deal . . . even with jacking the engine up, a swivel socket or extension is a must chris p.s. nice hole where's your skidplate??? -
"EJ it" but seriously. the main issue RX7's have, aside from the fact that almost every single one left has been abused, is gasket/seal that closes off the "combustion chamber" goes bad, = compression leak . . . the good news is that the 82 is the last of the "gen 1, phase 1" and you don't have to worry about the crappy turbo's in the later models yes that's a 12a chris on a side note, i just happened to see one of the old mazda rotary trucks yesterday, was pretty cool to see . . . . sometimes you worry about cool old vehicles (that aren't quite collector items, but still . . .) going extinct FTL . . .

**edit- haha, i was a little late to the party ^ ** congrats, and welcome to the USMB!! that car looks gorgeous! you'll really enjoy it (especially coming from the VW bus!! :dead: ) at "just over" 100k, i didn't notice any mention of a timing belt change and because the 2.5 is an "interference" engine, you'll want to check out the belt's condition and keep your eyes on it . . . a coolant additive shouldn't be necessary, as long as the system has been maintained well, which the ad says it was . . . the 2.5 as you'll read if you search posts on this topic is a little more prone to head gasket failure than some other soob engines, if it gets overheated, which is why the coolant system's maintenance is so important. if you suddenly start to see the engine's heat rising unusually one day, stop the car immediately, so as to avoid (hopefully) needing to replace those head gaskets. others will chime in with more experienced advice, but again, congrats, welcome, and enjoy!! chris

subaru made such a beast for some it the EJ series turbo'd cars (not sure which ones, but theres lotsa people here who do) might be easier depending on availability to stick with a subie unit . . . (?) b.t.w. congrats on the TWE'S-those look bada$$ chris -
Can I Not trust any garage anymore? :(
audio_file replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, heres an example: at honda, anytime someone came in with an s2000, or an NSX, there were 2 techs (out of the dozen or so that this honda dealer had) who were the only people allowed to touch these vehicles. they were specially trained and certified to work with honda's highest performance machines. at dodge/chrysler, when a viper rolled in, not only would a newb be doing your oil change, but any major service was handed out to whoever was next in the distribution of work orders. could be a newb, could be a veteran, it's like playing russian-roulette with your 70k viper (not to mention your life if you "tracked" the car after a service and someone really f'd up). there were NO specially trained "viper techs" as the info to work on the car was available to every tech on their little laptops . . . (and after the service, they'd send the car out to be washed, driven by a "lot boy" and washed with the same gravely wash rag that was just used to clean the 3500 diesel that was just in before, covered top to bottom with brake dust and road grime ) i still have nightmares chris -
my xt6 (awd) had a "rhythmic" vibration (on-off-on-off . . .) at speeds over 50 when i first drove it home. it had bad doj's on each axle though, so pretty easy diagnosis for my car . . . went away after i fixed the axles. from my experience with warped rotors, they really only gave me feedback thru the steering wheel and pedal when i applied the brakes, not while cruising down the freeway. . . you know more than i do about these things, the only wheel bearing test i know of is the ol' "lock the steering wheel, pull the handbrake, and try to wiggle (feel play in) each wheel" routine, do you think you'd feel it vibrate before you started hearing it grind though? chris

Can I Not trust any garage anymore? :(
audio_file replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
from a former salesman at a dealership, i wouldn't even trust most dealers to touch my car anymore. that extra money that the dealerships make from their service dept, that used to go to training and hiring the right folks is now being used to keep dealerships afloat . . . or to maintain the profits lining the owner's pockets at the same level they used to be. i watched the revolving door of "newbs" in the shops, they'd last for a few weeks, really screw something up royally because they hadn't been trained otherwise (i had a customer's car catch fire because one of the "techs" left a gas soaked rag in the engine bay, heard stories about another one who filled a customer's car with oil until it started coming back out the filler hole ) and they'd be fired. all the old timers, as has been mentioned, became frustrated with the new politics of each new service manager, and left- or complained so much, they got fired too . . . granted, i saw much more of this at the chrysler/dodge lot i worked for than at the honda lot that i was at last . . . hopefully subaru is more like the latter :-\ chris
