Going to redo pretty much every removable hose on my EA82T - any kind of special hose I should use? Is 1/2" and 5/8" heater hose alright on boost-side intake piping? Cheers

Yeah, I think I might be due for a new thermoswitch, just took a look at it and someones put rubbish crimp terminals on it. Looks dodgy. Can't find this glass viewing filter though. Heres a picture of my engine bay I took a while back - can you point me to it on there? The AC line with the red cap on it is the one that goes to the radiator dealie in front of the radiator - the other one seems to go back into the firewall.
-
I'm following the line (behind the right hand headlight if you're looking from in front of the car) and its covered in rubber/foam from where it bends from the metal line from the compressor all the way down to where it disappears into the hole beside the radiator, nothing on it. Is this one the one you're talking about?

So I just had a look, can see four plugs - two 2-wire and two 1-wire. All were fine with good contact, pulled them all apart and had light corrosion on all. Cleaned that up with some hot water, plugged back in, but still the same. I can't see the actual pressure switches on the line though, only the connectors. Anyone have a photo/diagram of where they are?

Hi guys, recently removed the radiator on my 85' EA82T wagon to backflush the radiator. Now that its been reinstalled, the air con fan runs when I turn the ignition around to accessory and on positions. I'm fairly sure it wasn't doing this before, and I've checked the plug for the fan and the aircon isn't on in the car. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

I've driven both, and let me tell you, if you can find a GC8 WRX Sti EJ20T, I would go for that. Even a WRX EJ20T out of one of those is a hell of a lot better then a twin. That is, if you're talking about the early twin turbos. I haven't driven a newer one, but I hear they're a lot better than the old ones. Don't let the whole "twin turbo" thing fool you. They're a horrible, expensive to run, unreliable, laggy POS. They're everywhere in New Zealand, and they're not called "holiday wreckers" for no reason. Single turbo EJ20s are better in just about every way, plus they're way more fun to drive. I wouldn't even look into a twin.

I'm fairly sure the early JDM EJ20D is OBD1, which is good news. So basically what you're saying is to cut the plugs off the end of anything that isn't related directly to the ECU, bar the Fuel Pump relay and the Ignition relay, the dash meters, and the diagnostic plugs? Also, if I swap a dual range box in, how do I wire the neutral switch? And do I wire it to the clutch pedal or the gearstick?

I've recently picked up a EA82T GL-10 with a 3AT in it (badged as a Leone GT-AT, JDM) but the engines pretty buggered and I've wanted to do an EJ swap for a long time. Been on the USMB for a few years now, watched builds and I'm quite excited and motivated to do it. Thinking about a JDM EJ20D from an 89-93 model Legacy with a 5sp D/R. I know you guys didn't get the early DOHC engines, so don't worry about that. I'm not worried about the gearbox swap, I figure that'll be the easy part, along with the mechanical side of the EJ swap. I'm just wondering about the harness stripping. I find the EA2EJ swap guide pretty informing, but there's a lot of grey area with the whole stripping the harness side of things. What's the best way to go about it? I've seen a lot of people sort of say "just identify the parts you need and strip everything out" but how do you identify that you need? From what i gather you need, crank/cam sensors, water/oil/knock/air sensors, fuel pump relay, etc. Do you basically strip everything that doesn't come out of the ECU-side plug? In short, is there some sort of "idiots guide to stripping harnesses" I can use? I'm really keen to do this and I know the learning curve will be steep. I just want to know what I'm letting myself in for with the wiring side of things.

Cheers. Anyone have any idea on what could cause the tach to jump? It's only the tach and the voltmeter, pretty steady until I put load on the system (lights, aircon, etc) then it starts jumping up and down. Voltmeter usually reads 14v when driving, and 12v at idle with the lights on, but I've seen it charging at up to 18v. Are these alernators internally regulated and would a bad regulator cause this to happen, or could it be the alternator? -

Okay, great, sounds like you know what you're talking about. Any ideas on where to start looking for more air leaks? -

Got the idle sorted. Turns out the hose from the intake to the idle air control was split right through. Threw a length of 1/2" heater hose in there and idle was good as new. Also got the shifter lined up with the inhibitor switch. Now my reverse lights come on when I'm actually in reverse and not in park! broke the tiny red plastic dealie that shows what gear you're in on the shifter, but I'll just superglue a tab onto it to fix it in the weekend. Stoked! -

Sure, if I get around to it I definitely will. Gonna be a wee bit down the road anyway, moving house this weekend though so will have a garage to store it in! Haha, tell me about it. Cheers, got the Legacy two years ago for $500, new radiator and battery, respray, and its done me amazingly well for nearly 40,000km. Very happy with it! -

Is it just connected to hoses or attached to the block/carb? -
This is going to be one epic build, am watching very closely!

Photos are up now Think this is the one for an EJ swap, engine is screwed. Fairly sure its got a blown head gasket, water is milky green, sludge in the oil filler, and around the radiator cap. Doesn't smoke or misfire though - I'll tell you how it goes on water in a couple days. Also (this really freaks me out) when I pull the oil filler cap off while the car is running, it stumbles and dies. That's really weird, its got suction through the oil filler. I'm thinking blown turbo oil seal? Either way, I think this engines gonna have to come out. I'm thinking JDM DOHC EJ20 - from early JDM Legacys (89 - 93). 150HP and a DR 5MT swap. Woo! -
The selector in my 3AT 1985 EA82T wagon selects gear just fine, but I have to push the shifter hard up to get the P light to show on the dash, and its difficult to get the reverse lights on in reverse. Is there adjustment on the inhibitor switch and where abouts is it? On the gearbox itself or in the shift lever?

Hi all, haven't posted here in ages, mainly since I haven't had any issues after buying my 89' Legacy 2.2... I've just picked up a sweet 85' model Leone (or GL in the states I guess), EA82T, 4wd auto (think its a 3AT). It's a weapon, been so long since I drove an EA82 I forgot how much fun they are!!! I'm going to post some pictures tomorrow when its light (its 9:30PM in NZ now) so you can see the epicness that is the Leone GT-AT. Factory badging, its a JDM import with a high touring roof, factory roof racks and sweet sweet electronic goodness all around... Even has air con! Never had an EA82 with that before Anyways, its got a funny idle, and a jumpy tach. Voltmeter says its charging around 14v when driving, runs sweet as a nut when you're on the move, but when you stop it seems to rev out to about 2k RPM, then almost stall, then back up. I figure it might be a dirty air flow sensor, or maybe a cracked/damaged CTS. But the jumpy tach sort of freaks me out into thinking it may be a charging problem. It died on me at the lights earlier. Had to push it around the corner, got the Legacy out to jump it and it started fine. Started it three or four times since and it goes good as, even idles alright for a while, then every now and then starts hunting for an idle again. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas before I get into the engine bay of yet ANOTHER ea82 and figure out whats going on - just don't want to throw too much cash at it if its an easy fix. Sorry for the wall of text, I'll post pictures tomorrow. Stay tuned - its a beaut! EDIT: Here's the pictures!! Sorry about the low quality, had to use the work camera and it sucks. Think these are factory, they say Subaru on the glass. Rare? Not sure if the States got the "Touring Wagon" version, anyone know? Never seen the panels behind the rear wheel with no rust before... Score!! Some more JDM badging goodness The Subaru Crew (ignore the Jag in the background - it's my flatmates, and surprise surprise, its not running ) -
Just take them out and switch them to opposite sides. They only wear on the side the force pushes on if you get my drift.

Hey guys, been noticing a weird phenomenon in my EJ22 89' Lego when I'm going around corners. If I drive it easy, then sweet, no problems. But if I push it hard, when I straighten up it seems to buck/jerk pretty hard until I take the foot off the throttle or push the clutch in. At first I thought it was a fueling issue as I was a poor student up till about a week ago, and usually had next to nothing in the tank. But now I've filled it up it's still doing it. I figure its something to do with binding with the AWD, but I've only ever heard about that sort of thing on ATs, and its a 5 speed AWD. Anyone got any ideas?

It's just a duct for hot air, on your airbox they'll be a little lever you can change that pulls air from that pipe. Handy when you have very cold weather, but pretty useless otherwise.

You guys both seem to have some pretty good skills behind you, so why not just drop it? GD, if you don't like the idea of building an EA engine, why even bother look at the thread? Its not your money he's putting into it, so whats the deal? The consensus is that EJs make more power, are more reliable, and more economic, but he's not building an EJ, he's building an EA, end of story. Seems pretty straightforward to me. Personally Quidam, I think this is pretty cool! I don't really know the limits of the EA82 engine, but you seem to have some pretty solid work there, and I hope it goes well for you! Will be watching this thread!
