High RPMs at freeway speeds, is this norm?
samo replied to 211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
^ my dad's old '85 Accord had 55 in orange. The 3AT is geared really low, as mentioned above. If it is indeed shifting into 3rd, a 4EAT swap will help, but even better would be a 5-speed swap. My 5SP Loyale cruises nicely at 70, running only around 3500 RPM. I still get bad gas mileage, but oversize snow tires and lots of extra weight will do that to you . -
Keep in mind that unless you have an early Loyale, in many states an ER27 swap will not pass emmissions, as the swapped engine often has to be of the same year or newer than the vehicle it is being swapped into. If you can find a late XT6 and you've got an early Loyale, it's a go, though. Even so, the EJ22 would be my swap of choice. It's incredibly reliable, plenty of power, and goes in reasonably easily.

I'd be happy to go back up on Saturday. There's a great, really long trail outside of Hyak that has TONS of turnoffs, everything from gravel, to some serious mud, stream crossings... everything you could want. It's a fun road. The snow stopped last night at about 9:00, but hopefully it'll start again before Saturday. Where would be a good meeting place for everyone? Here in North Seattle is fine with me (and probably Eric too ), or anywhere along I-90. I can make directions to the trailhead too, if anyone wants. -

Well, I'll certainly be up here tonight. Dunno if anyone else is coming or not, but I hope so! It's still snowing like crazy up here. -
THIS IS AN ALL-POINTS BULLETIN! SNOQUALMIE PASS HAS 3" OF FRESH SNOW! I'm up here for the day, and I WANT TO GO PLAY IN IT! I know some sweet roads just out of Hyak. If any of you can make it up here today, please let me know! My cell is 206.351.8258. The pass is exit 53 off of I-90, about an hour out of Seattle. Please let me know if you can make it! I know it's last minute, but there's TONS OF IT! SNOW!!!

Thank ya . Made it the other day. V2 of the bumper looks great. I was almost thinking to have the reciever either on top or flush with the plate where the fogs are mounted to. Where it's at right now, I'd be worried about it getting hung up - that underpan on the bumper is too nice and smooth to break up with a reciever. ...but that's just me.
-
Likewise - I'd want to see the design, perhaps a prototype. I'd like to see a 2" reciever on there, and perhaps the turn signals more integrated into the bumper. Where they are right now, they're rather exposed.
-
As said above, just look for the driveshaft, rear diff, and CVs. It'll be pretty obvious once you get under there. As Brian mentioned, the 2WD models usually sit a little lower than the 4WD/AWD ones, so a trained eye can spot them, but looking for the rear drive hardware is your best bet.
-
I would buy this. Looks awesome! I'd want a receiver on it, right in the middle under the fogs.
-
Talk to Primitive Racing. They make a burly rear diff protector for the WRX. Perhaps it might fit your Legacy. It's worth checking out, anyway. I like how the cars in those pics are all RHD. I wonder why an EA82 needs a rear diff protector, though? That diff is tough as all hell, and probably stronger than just about any skid plate. EDIT: Primitive's website says it should fit early Legacies. Perhaps that includes '95?

Yeah, and depending on the meatiness of the tread as well, and how soft the compound is (i.e. a tire that wears faster will generally start larger), and whatever the manufacturer feels like. Trust me, if you saw the 185/70R14s I have on my wagon, you'd think they're significantly bigger. They're big fellas .
-
Despite the measurements listed on the tire, different tires are made somewhat different sizes. I have three different sets of 185/70R14s, each measuring a VERY different size. For example, my old cheapo Douglas street tires did not ever rub on my rear fenders, even when fully loaded. My Yokohama snows rub like mad. Same wheels, same size, just a different tire.

Looks great, Austin. That wagon of yours is looking intensely cool! Can't wait until the day I get to see it in person.

Spotted: Red EA82 Wagon, I-90 East- up the pass
samo replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I was SUPER late, that's why I was flying as fast as I was. My wagon at 80-85 MPH is a little on the scary side, but she does okay, at least until the really steep part just before the summit exits . -
Ha! Good ol' Marysville. Always good for a laugh.

Latest mod.... at LEAST 50hp :)

Music Millenium on NW 23rd in Portland, OR. I would guess that any self-respecting record shop should have one. Noah: When you make it back to the left coast, and after my wagon is lifted, we ought to do a photoshoot of the ridiculously stickered wagons . -

As the locals know, I'm a big fan of band stickers. Slayer, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Marylin Manson, Shadows Fall, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Pantera, Jellyneck (props to anyone who has seen them live), Ozzy, a couple Motörhead ones, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Arch Enemy, Black Label Society, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath all grace the tail of my wagon. I love stickers. There's three or four more now since that photo. METAL FOREVER! -
I put an 80-mil (a little over 1/16") self-adhesive clear vinyl on mine. It's tough stuff, but the company that makes it is no longer in business, sadly. I know where you can get 40-mil (a little over 1/32"), but it's not as tough.

You know, I don't rightly remember. I know it couldn't have been a terrible amount, because my boss was too cheap to spend tons of money, but I honestly don't know. Sorry :-\
