  1. Try running a N/A diesel at 7k feet. loses lots of power. Turbo's do a lot for power in diesels. Blowing black smoke is just wasted fuel.
  2. do a compression test, that will tell you which headgasket went. Replacing headgaskets on any engines is a crapshoot, sometimes you'll get thousands of happy miles out of it, others (like a ford 361) will run good for a couple of days, then blow up in worst ways. Do they like the car? If not, sell it cheap to someone else to fix.
  3. i keep screwing myself over while lifting my loyale. The directions are a bit vauge at times, adn I'm a bit overzealous at removing bolts. I've managed to tweak the engine and tranny in the body and can't get it back straight. I stripped the threads of one of the new bolt in the process.. seemed to be going in a bit stiff. i screwed up the steering linkage, and I can only get one strut in. All the things that have gone wrong are my fault, and I get feeling stupid and have to take a break. Christing A' this thing should be rolling by now. I'm postponing the D/R and Ej22 untill I get some road miles on this thing. My lack of self motivation is really dragging this project out.
  4. I used a oxy/acy welder to melt and put 6 points on one of those lock nuts. Then pounded a 6point impact sokt on to it and removed with a breaker bar. the nuts were trash, but the stud was good.
  5. They put a crossbar between the two tow hooks and the bumper only supports the tounge weight. Now, if you build a custom bumper, the tounge weight could be boosted a bit. Just remember that the bumper is hooked into crumple zones, so putting the fore/aft forces of the trailer purely on the bumper wouldn't be a good thing.
  6. wow, thats a lot of metal shavings. A big hole too. Owch. Did it still run on 3?
  7. yeah, pull the clip off that holds the brake line to the strut, then carefully sawzall through the bracket from the side and bend the two halfs back to pop out the brake line. Go real easy on the pinch bolt, lots of penetratin oil and heat if you need it. I took my struts out tonight, and the pinch bolts almost had their heads snap off, even after lots of propane torch aplication.
  8. Its not an impreza, its a legacy, so I have no idea about the suspension similarities between the two platforms. Thank you LosDiosVerde, exactly the answer I was looking for. This Brighton is going UP!
  9. $600! You lucky bastard. I'm green with envy. Them things are like gold round here, even the old late 80's ones are selling for twice that. Those are nice trucks. A couple of my friends have ones just like that and they kick but. high clearance on a stock truck is a good thing.
  10. EA82's are seen in loyales and the other boxy style cars, EJ's are found in legacys. ER27's are found in XT6's. EJ22's are considered the most rugged overhead cam engines, the EA81 is a pushrod engine found in most of the pre 1985 DL's and GL's as well as brats. Simple, but lower power. I forget the SVX's designation.
  11. the car has 185/75R14's on it right now, do the 205/70R15's would only be about an 1"-1.5" larger, giving round a half inch of clearance.
  12. thank you very much. were the struts bolt ins, just to make sure. how much did just the struts raise the car?
  13. I've checked the prices on a couple of sites, and the outback struts are a differen't part and ~$5-10 more.
  14. I was under the impression that the turbo were the lowest compression engines, the SPFI were the highest at 9.5:1 and the carb's fell in the middle. Will the mpfi turbo intake manifold bolt up the the cab heads though?
  15. I'd be worried about cold shocking the turbo on water crossings, even thought the turbo is mounted pretty high on the subies. other than that, it would be nice.
  16. My dad's car, a 1995 Legacy Brighton w/ 2.2L, is leaking shock oil from all four struts. The struts seem to function fine, but its definiately time for new ones. The car, being a brighton, rides kinda low, and the outbacks seem to ride higher. What raises the suspension hight on the outbacks, the strut body or the springs? I was figuring it would be the strut body, and since all this would be being replaced, I could gain some ride height by putting in outback struts. Does anyone know if my scheme would work? I know people have been putting outback struts on impreza's to lift them up a bit.
  17. rear diff lock. Electric or air would be great, but a mechanical one would be better than noting. A diff lock would be the best for off roading with pavement driving also.
  18. more space for the gilfriend while on cruise controll right? would seem like a good Idea, but the seatbelt angles would be off if you went too far back.
  19. from 0-10 bucks. seriously easy to do. won't fix all your problems, but its a step in the right direscion. I'd be worried about the crank angle sensor the most, it has the biggest affect on driving.
  20. look at the interior. spotless. all mine have gerase stains on the fabric from working on it. That car is in beautiful shape.
  21. Coolant temp is easy. Its right on the intake manifold, to the left and closer to the front when looking under the hood. It has one wire going into a epoxy filled plug. There is 2 of them right next to each other. One is the dash gauge, the other is the computer. 5 minute job. I forget which is which. would make the engine run happier knowing it was warmed up. Has it been hard to start? Crank angle is inside distributor, under rotor. lots of them in J/Y's
  22. The EGR valve recirculates some of the exhaust to introduce the inert exhaust gass to reduce combustion temperatures. NOx is produced in large quantities by high temperature combustion. So the system does affect emissions, as NOx is a major ingredient to the smog seen drifting around. If you disable any emmisions system, no matter whether you are a mechanic or not, you are subject to huge fines and I think jail time in some cases. The law is not well enforced, and the only real risk of getting caught is if you get in an accident where defective equipment was thought to be a factor and they investigate your car. Then you can be up ************ creek without a paddle real fast. Systems like EGR are expected vacuum leaks and the computer must be adjusted somehow to run leaner in their absence. The computer is delivering fuel for MAP reading + expected vacuum leak. That would make the mixture rich in the absence of the vacuum leak. My possibly wrong $.02
  23. Being 2wd doesn't mean 4wd can't be swapped in.... Real nice find. That car looks to be in pristine condition.
  24. Killing cars while they still have useful parts is wrong. Think of all the miles that somebody could have enjoyed with that vehicle. Now, destroying an old, rusted out beater with crap parts all over is more legitamate. Can't say i haven't participated in that. Prety much, my rule is if the body is good, you can't beat it. If its rusted out, it's free range. burning a good body in a bonfire is wrong, and i sympathise with you. That sucks hardcore to lose an opertunity like that.
  25. Nice! Thats great the trip worked out. the Topas can suck hardcore. When I was down im mexico, we stuffed 5 people and the driver into a nissan tsuni (centra) and bottomed out on every one of those damn things. People wait to beg and sell things by some of the topas. I hope you took lots of pictures, so we can get a visual tour of your trip. That must have been great traveling through all those countries.
