Legacy springs and strutcaps fit right on Outback struts. I just finished putting outback struts in a 95 legacy brighton. The suspension doesn't squash down much when you take the car off a jack, so I'd be hesitant to put 2" bigger springs in. Seems like the car would have no flex, and you'd be maxing out the struts all the time. Putting just the outback struts does enough to be able to fit larger tires, and it is a noticeable difference. You can actually see the ground on the other side of the car!

Did you get the 4/4 lift? My loyale has the same stance in the front, \ / I wondered if i screwed up, but others said it always ended up like that. I've got my doubts, but there's not a heck of a lot you can do.

Someone drilled holes in my exhuast pipe.

yeah, your car has issues. My old carby EA82 whupped butt. I'd check the accelerator pump. If you take off the air filter housing, and look down the throat of the carb, it should squirt gas in when you snap the throttle open. 83 horse is pretty small, but it feels good when you have it all, which your engine doesn't right now. -
Hells yeah! The brighton just made a big leap down the road to de-brightonization. spent the past 2 afternoons working on it, and the KYB GR2 outback struts are in. totaly bolt in, perfect fit. not bad for an amature mechanic using a pit instead of a lift. I'm proud of myself, it only took 10 hours total for all four corners, and that was with rusted brake lines and bleeder screws in the back. I used the sawzall trick in the front, so I didn't have to take the flexline off the front. The car rides way better, no float in washboard any more. Feels nicer being 2" higher. Now it only needs a skidplate and tachometer.

Saw a mint Brat drive down route 124 in Mason N.H. yesterday. It was blue, with a big arse roll bar, chrome, and it had 3 off-road lights bolted to the top. Only got a short glimpse, so I can't guess at the year, but I'd say it might have been a first gen. Beautiful shape, and engine was running good. Whoever owns it must take pride in it. If it's yours, good job and nice Brat.

Are these rare? I was under the impression that most turbo legacys were automatics, but I've seen pictures of manual ones. Saw one for sale in the local Want ad and gulped at the price-$10,000 obo! Yes, the comma is in the right place. Seller claims that it is designated and "Experimental" car by subaru, 1 of 15 made. I think that all that is B.S., but I wondered if it might be true. I'm looking for a EJ22T donor car for my wagon, and I don't think the price is right for this one.

Update: The XT6 is MINE! ALL MINE!
WoodsWagon replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, don't go too far down the fuel route. My dad's 86 gl had its timing belt snap, and he took half the wiring harness apart trying to figure out why the fuel pump wasn't working. Take the distributor cap off and crank the engine, if the rotor turns, the belt is good. -
Hey, I happen to be a lesbian trapped in a man's body, and I ride bicycles. I find that statement offensive, seeing as I think the Tribeca is an ugly pointless SUV. My opinion wouldn't be as concrete if it had a manual tranny with dual range to back up the H6. I have posted too many times in previous threads my objections, so I aint gonna do it in this one.

The engine crossmember spacers only use the 2 origional bolts? There is a hole in the unibody for a third larger bolt that I would think is good for adding extra strength. The further you block something away from its origional location, the more breaking leverage everything has. Nice score with the car, and good job lifting it. Have you fixed the engine yet?

I've been pondering the dual E-brake on my car. Only difficulty is making a bracket to attach the single cable to the lever, but if I got off my rear I could get it done. I've used the Ebrake to balance out the power when one front and One rear wheel are spinning. I've found that flooring the car while hauling on the E'brake will get enough power across to get out of the stuck spot. Better watch out on sunny days, all that shiny diamond plate would make that like a tinfoil oven! Sexy though, looks really nice.

I'd watch those front shackle mounts. I had that whole section of frame get rusty and it *ahem* kinda fell off. the car's structure seemed fine, even after that heavy piece of metal fell off. I'd brace the h*ll out of it. That looks real nice though, good work.

So.. with a bit of a suspension work out the camber will correct itself a bit? I think I can arrange that I'l retighten all the bolts afterwards though. still have to get those 2 bolts in somehow, and the steering linkage isn't quite right.

More CAlifornia Smog Drama
WoodsWagon replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I personnaly believe that the only smog test should be a snifter up the tailpipe. As long as the emmisions are within factory limits or below, it should pass, no questions asked. All that really matters is that the car pollutes the least, so what it has under the hood should have no bearing on the tests. Mabe a check on the EVAP and PCV systems might also be needed, but nothin else. -
Help! Really did it this time...*update*
WoodsWagon replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow..bentness. It looks like stuff bent enough for the halfshaft to hit that body flange. That takes skill. Glad to hear its all back together. I'd get that wheel balanced just in case, I'd guess it's bent. -
I got the struts in, and all the bolts except the 2 that stripped, and put the wheels on and lowered it down. The only problem is that the front wheels lean outwards at the top-2degrees on the pass. side, 3.5 degrees driver side. I put the strut cap extenders in right according to the markings on them, but maby they were marked wrong? I don't think the camber is supposed to have the wheels leaning out. It must be something I did, everything that's gone wrong so far has been, I just can't figure out what I did.

So it has a twin turbo SVX engine in it?

Does it still hold coolant? Other than the rim and tire, is the allignment good enough? If so, I'd rally the hell out of it and then swap the parts into the Wagon again. That sucks that you lost it.

I once saw a jeep grand cherokee, mid 90's, with quadra-track or whatever AWD they use with mismatched tires. Actually, I heard it first. It was howling like a banshee and screamed its way alll the way to the gas station I was fillin up at. The noise was obviously eminating from the transfer case. I approached the female driver and mentioned the issue. She said that "Its been doing that ever since I bought new tires for the back." She had matching tires, just the back ones were brand new, and the front ones were bald. Needless to say, the LSD in the transfer case must have been smoking wreckage, but the noise was really amazing. If you have to buy only a pair of tires, put them on opposite corners of the car. That way, the rotational speed of the front axel and the rear axel are equal, saving the center diff. each end diff gets more of a working, so the only way is to get all 4 and be safe.

Well, I broke the handle off of the BFH throwing it at the wall, so I'm in the same temper controll category as the subarujunkie. I'm going to let it sit for a few days and come back to it when I feel more optomistic.
