Who was the person who got stranded on a mountain road with it collapsed both in front and behind? They took the fast way down to the next switchback and I seem to remember a wheel got ripped off? I've bashed my legacy pretty hard on rocks and stumps. the tank seems to crush with out leaking in my experience, and who hasn't felt the floor ripple as something rubs it? The only big vulnerability is an unprotected oil pan. I saw a loyale in Jackson WY with the control arm twisted and the radius rod bent, far enough that the wheel was almost touching the body, but it was still being driven. I could tell by the bald tire on that wheel. Seems tough for a car to be beat like that and still drivable.

Well I was out testing my wagon and getting it to climb stuff so it would fully compress the suspension, and I saw gas dribbling out the back. Come to find that the EVAP hoses have had their nipples rust right off the tank. So now I have to invest another $250 in the car to buy a new tank. The nipple for the main fuel feed started leaking when I poked it, so it was time for a new one. I dropped the old tank today, with only one bolt having to be cut off. The rest of the tank looks reasonably good except for the nipples. How many other people have had their nipples rust off? And has anyone found a tank cheaper than $250?

I'm back. I will look into reserving campsites if possible. How many should I reserve? I'm thinking minimum of 3, but I don't want to be paying for empty ones. 4x4 ing trails. I have no Idea. We need a local to say where some are. Looking on topo maps for 4WD or Class 6 roads are good ways of finding legal spots. -
#1 free car, did decent in snow and woods, but needed more clearance. #2 6'3"+ frame doesn't like sitting down into cars. Sliding in sideways is better for the back. #3 Hatch issue. same with hood. I've dented my skull too many times on low hatches. #4 working under the hood. I don't have to really bend over anymore to rest my elbows on the radiator support.

the EGR system is purely for lowering NOx emissions. It works by reintroducing the inert exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber to lower peak combustion temperatures, where NOx are formed. Misconceptions range from thinking that it is "reburning" the exhaust gas to make it cleaner. It can't burn to start with, so it can't reburn and the amount to reburn to clean up the exhaust would make the engine stall. I can't tell how many times experienced mechanics have stated the reburning Croc'o'sht. Improves gas milage. Bullhooy! By reducing the amount of combustable mixture in the cylinders, you are lowering the power output of the engine. Thus, you open the throttle more to let more in increasing the power to what you need to cruise. Gas milage stays the same because the same overall amount of fuel/air mix is being burnt. Removing the system will not kill the engine. Just make sure both ends of the system are sealed off well. The engine will not run rich or lean because of the system because the gasses are inert to start with and only take up volume, reducing the amount of metered and mixed air/fuel. When it is removed, that volume will be replaced by an equal amount of METERED and MIXED air/fuel. It will be mixed properly, and may lead to a power gain because of more A/FM in the cylinder. But not that much. The system is a matter of choice. Sacrafice a bit of power to lower NOx emmisions, which are a major ingredient to smog, or strip the system in the name of simplicity and dinky power gains and FUBAR the air we have to breath. Its up to you. My personal opinion is that the CO/HC convertor should be ditched and the lean/rich cycling of the injectors should be set to a linear steady mix. The lean/rich cycling seen by the O2 sensor is mostly just to feed the catalyst and keep it up to temp, it seems. I'm not sure if the cats are really necesarry anymore or just a holdover from simpler days.

Help... I need someone smart to help.... please?
WoodsWagon replied to xoomer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If this is the left hand head, mabe you got the camshaft timing 180 degrees off? That would stop it from starting. -
Crisis!!! I Need Help Quickly And Badly!
WoodsWagon replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it 4wd? If it is, just drive it till the axel breaks, then remove the remains of the halfshaft from the DOJ and drive it in 4wd. -

I'll be back home in a week. Then I'll do campground booking, trail finding, ect. Anyone else interested in doing some research, please do, and post it here. I have no event organization experience, so I'm hoping enough people will show up and we will find things to do so it will not suck. Lets make it a good time for all. -
tapping the brakes with an open diff will help get power to the other wheel. Belive me, I used the trick the other day to get a stackcruiser out of a slippery spot. GM posi-lockers will act like open diffs till you spin one wheel fas enough, then whack and it locks. Kinda a high wear system.

Why dont subes have free-wheeling hubs
WoodsWagon replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Reasons for locking hubs: increases gas milage. The lack of half the drivetrains rolling resistance helps Reduces cost of drivetrain. The parts between the transfer case and the hub don't have to be rugged, because they are only used intermitantly. Drawbacks. They break. always at the wrong time. They get stuck. ANyone ulse used hot water and a hairdryer to get the hubs to lock in winter? Autolocking hubs are notorious for shattering or stripping. How many rear axels and differentials do you hear of going out on a subie? The rear end is built for full time drive duty, as used in datsuns, so it has no problem doing part time drive duty and just spinning the rest of the time. I personally find locking hubs a PITA, but they are so common that people get in the mindset that manual lockers are the best because they are better than autolockers, ignoring the fact that you don't need a disengagement option anyways. -

Yes, that sounds good. The date will be the second weekend in september. That is September 10th and 11th. Everyone agree? We got a couple of people already signed up for work vacation for those days. -

I will be in wyoming for 2 weeks starting tomorrow, so I may or may not have internet acess. Looking at the areal photo, see the road going north out of town? on the left hand side, there is a baseball dimond. Right by the baseball diamond is a parking lot. There is a cemetary across the street. Should the parking lot be the meeting point on the first day? Moosens. How tall are you? just for sizing the bike. It will be a beaten POS, but it will work well enough. It only has to last the weekend. My bike is also a really beaten POS, except with lots of expensive broken parts, so you're not going to get the short end of the stick. Anyone else need a bike? The more bikes stacked on the roof of the wagon, the louder it will whistle, and keep the deer away! -
Satelight is good for downloads. Pictures and movies load pretty fast. Execpt during thick snowstorms. I went out and swept off the dish more times than I can count this winter. Pretty much all the ways of being online get schooled by the connection at my high school. I belive its a T1 line going to an in house router? It is smoking fast. you click and BAM you're at the link.

I get my vehicles buried all the time. Does that mean I suck at off-roading or am I just tdoo stupid to avoid big mudpits? Getting stuck is lots of fun, its the being stuck part that sucks. Amount of air while offroading can add to overall score. Doing jumps in the mud would out score anything though.

I would be willing to piece together multiple mtn. bikes for anyone interested. Nothing special or really rugged, but wheels to get you into the woods. Prerequests for rolling bikes would be nice, then I can start finding parts. Good point on the swimming. Mabe fishing would help prevent pneumonia. Month: September Days: some weekend. the earlier in the month the better for the weather. Location: East Burke VT I'll start looking for links to things in the area, and put them up as I find them. http://www.kingdomtrails.org/ http://www.allstays.com/us-vermont-hotels/east-burke-hotels.htm http://www.islandpond.com/hiking.htm http://www.nulhegan.com/nulhegan/What_to_Do/Outdoor_Activities/Camping http://www.nulhegan.com/maps/camping.php Area map http://www.hillclimb.org/ August 13/14 at burke mtn. http://www.wildflowerinn.com/recreation.html -

whoo hoo, the spamming worked. I will never do that again though. Lotsa typing. Dirtbiking I know isn't alowed ont he kingdom trails, but I'm sure someting could be found. Good to have awareness of an upcoming meet. Thanks for cheking ont he hill climb moosens. They have them half open shed thingys for campin in at eh campground, adn firepits. So your sleeping on a wood floor, not the ground. Coin op showers (hot) and water spigots. Decent campground. -
Back in the olden days, before people got so TV addicted, they relied on words to convey thoughts and images. The reciepient of a message used their Imagination to Visualize what the sender was describing. See if you can bring that long lost skill out of the closet where it was bannished during long hours of having everything handed to you visually. It might get some brain cells exercised. I'm pissy because I've seen so many posts with people rudly telling them that its worthless without pictures when the writer has done more than enough to give something you can visualize. Like the snorkel thread, he used the stock SPFI hole from the airbox to the fender and ran it inside the fender untill he probably ran it through a hole in the side of the fender and ran it up the A pillar. I can see that in my mind, and I don't need a gawddamn picture. I don't have the knowledge to post pictures on the net. I have all the equipment available, but I'll be damned if i'm gonna ask my dad how to post pictures on the net. Hell, I don't even know how to get them out of the camera. Techonoligcally benighted, yell, but I don't care because my Imagination gets me by. Learn to visualize stuff. And quit ***************in about "Useless without pictures". Its 4 am and I'm in a ***************y mood, but this needs to be said. everyone who doesn't post pics and optes to describe it instead just gets ************ from the people who can't be bothered to visualize the desciption and just takes it. That sucks in my opinion. I try to respect people here and be mostly helpful, and I don't see the point of giving someone ************ over not having pictures. Does it make you feel good to harass others? Anyways, my car is whoopen arse, and when its finished, you can see it on the road or at WCSS8 hopefully. Untill then use yer imagination.

Apologies to anyone I just kinda spammed. Be aware each was individual and hand typed. I never come by the Meet greet section so I figured that it would be a good heads up. And if you're readin this, it worked. So throw out some dates that would work. -
Can we see a pic of the other side? I'd like to see the damage repair progress. I must say it looks good from that angle.

New ones are realitively cheap and the K&N's aren't all their cracked up to be. The impreza sports have pointless hood scoops, mabe you could work out a way to mount a airbox under that and get a bit of forced induction at speed? Put the MAF right before the Throttle body and the airbox tright after that? would that be near the scoop? a bit of squishy foam would join the hood to the airbox when closed. Sucking noise coming from the hood would definiately up the cool factor.

Keeping the thread alive. September? Everyone in agreeance? Send a PM to anyone you know in NH, VT, NY area. Anyone know the name of the local motor club? I know there's one up there, they were holding a hillclimb event when I was up there. Doing a run just to see what our cars can do would be cool. Probably a fee or becoming a member deal. Everyone bringing a Mtn. bike? The area trails are 110% worth it. single tracks through trees with berms, doesn't get much better than that. AND a local bike shop. Research 4x4 trails in the area. I'm bringing my wagon, so there should be some off-road action. Who's in?
