Gas smell on start up
1982gl4 replied to desertsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYep that's what my WRX does when it starts getting cold out, the temp drops the lines harden and seep fuel, that's when I know it's time to get the winter beater out!

New guy: Should I buy this '82 GL 4x4 Wagon
I would pay that for it! (probably more) I hate how rare these things are in the north east! I'd say it's most likely a simple fix as edrach has already said.

What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
I have a brat like that.... Also I totally get where you are coming from with *most* Wrx owners, I started with my Brat and then moved to a Wrx (still have the Brat plus an ea81 wagon and a gen one lego) Some of the kid's I go to collage with just don't fully appreciate the older gen Subarus, all they think about are turbos and shiny wheels It's obnoxious!!

1982gl4 replied to 1982gl4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA Very good point I forgot to mention! I just swapped it out because I had all of it and it was free!

Fender flares
^ Outrageous I have heard of people using toyota pickup flares, I'm not sure on the years but it sounds like it could work.

1982gl4 replied to 1982gl4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks! They are off a Forester. I ran them on my wrx for a season and this year I decided I wanted something with less power and a lift (plus I don't want the salt monsters to eat my baby) so now I have four Subarus. I can't get sick of that flat 4! -SB

New Guy, Is an '82 Brat worth $2500
Everywhere haha! Look really closely at the bed and the rockers, those tend to rust out very quickly, also look right behind the front wheels that's also an area of concern. If it's in good shape ( not rusty and mechanically strong) I would say it's probably worth that. If it need stuff (as all old car do) you could easily be racking up repair bills right after you get so be careful. If it's not a good enough car, spend some time looking for the "right" one, trust me I impulsed bought a Brat and spent way to long and way to much $ on fixing it up when I could have had a perfect one shipped to my house for way less then what I have into mine now! (I'm not saying it wasn't worth it just a lot of work)

Wish I could still find them like that where I live! Here's a link of everything I have done to it except the lift! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=117327&highlight=meet+spiffy

1982gl4 replied to 1982gl4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI didn't notice anything that needed lengthening on the gen 1 Pretty much everything fit nicely, even the abs harness bolted in the stock location . I'm not sure about the rear brake lines, mine were looking really rusty so I replaced them at the same time. BTW Nice Lego!

1982gl4 replied to 1982gl4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm sure there is somewhere on here... A lot of people have done this. Pretty much I took the strut assemblies out of my outback (for the gen one you have to change the rear mounts as they are different and no matter how much you want them to fit they wont ) I also took all the subframe spacers so my camber would still be in check. You have to take all the hardware from the outback because the bolts are all longer. And then you spend a few hours putting it all in! -SB

1982gl4 replied to 1982gl4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt's so worth it, It was nice having a whole parts car. Every time I forgot something I could just go get it! I also took the interior! It's sweet! I'm going to add bash plates next week, but first I have to change the oil pan because it's leaking pretty badly now. Has really good ground clearance now too, right about 10" at the rocker panels.

Rusty 4WD wagon.
Same here, the nicest one I have seen in a long time was far worse than the one posted above. Rust the one thing that can kill a Subaru.

All hail the Subaru!!! Best snow vehicle EVER!!!
This was today in the beautiful state of VT. Nothing better than a Subaru and some snow! This road hadn't even been driven on yet!

Lifted!
Yesterday I decided I was really board and that my Legacy (a.k.a. Spiffy) need a little more ground clearance! I gutted my outback parts car and took the struts, and spacers out of it, swapped out the rear strut mounts and the thing is sweet. We also got our first real snow today so that made it even better! It has much more ground clearance now and it made it up a bank my friends Colorado pickup wouldn't even go up Here are some pics. What do you think?

6 cyl Subi
1982gl4 replied to MaddCelt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX+1 On the gen one lego! I just got my first one three weeks ago for $650 needing a door and an alternator ( I had both) It's been awesome! Even being an auto (which i usually hate) it's surprisingly peppy and gets decent milage. It can be a little annoying on the highway because the auto likes to shift a lot up hills, but with a 5speed the thing would be amazing. -SB

Rusty 4WD wagon.
It took me forever to learn how to post pics! And that's nothing for rust! you should have seen the ones that I have fixed Vt winters are a little rough on the cars from the 80's! Any other plans besides fixing the rust? -SB

will this fit/work?
+1 on what GD said. the 82 cluster was just a red colored version of the white gages that came on 83 and later ea81s. That one is a little older.
