  1. After 1996, no rear disk brakes on 1st-gen. Impreza, and no ABS except on OBS (but still with drums); of course not counting the 2.5 "what's these bubbles in the coolant" RS. On 1993-94 LS, you can have a factory sunroof!
  2. Have you removed the spark plugs? This always helps. Also, hold the belt to the sprocket with one or two small, soft-jawed spring clamps. I have to say that reading these stories makes one think that you'd be better off driving on an "overdue" factory belt for a while, till you can DIY, rather than taking it to a mechanic.
  3. Looks like the bezel/housing has to be swapped anyway. But as long as it's of standard (single DIN) size, it should fit. It's mounted in the same way as the big storage pocket or the radio, that is, to access the screws, you need to slide out the radio bracket. Send him the ashtray, too, in case '98 is different from '97. PS: Does the ashtray still not fit after you remove the bin?
  4. eryque: Go ahead and do the swap. I'll just buy new pieces when I get to it, I have too many SubaruBucks.
  5. This code is not listed in the OBDII section of 1995 Service Manual. It does have P0443.
  6. If you remove that little bin unscathed, I'll buy it. Could swap for the ashtray but you already have one.
  7. Apparently in Canada, the dealers carry a separate "value line" of maintenance parts which are really aftermarket products with a Subaru logo. In US, such is the case with Chrysler. The idea was to compete with independent shops and chain stores. The solution is to always order by part number.
  8. I use MaxLife oil and auto transmision fluid. Can't say I can notice the difference made by the oil, other than you can change is less frequently since it's semi-synthetic, but I the transmission shifts very well. Also, besides Dexron & Mercon, the trans. fluid meets other, more stringent specifications, and I hope this is good for the transfer clutch.
  9. The ashtray simply snaps into the trim bezel, which also holds the lighter socket. If you remove it, there's just a hole. The bezel itself appears to be mounted by its sides to the metal frame for the radio, it's DIN-sized. Is the bezel different between smoker and non-smoker versions? I have a '95 with a "smoker" version of the same center console. They didn't have a non-smoker version then. Incidentally, my minivan has an optional smoker kit, with two ashtrays in the back for the kids.
  10. The third fitting is for the charging hose (yellow), the tank/can adapter is for that one.

  12. If does fail on CO2 at idle, I don't understand what can be done, unless the idle speed is too high. The carbon in the fuel has to go somewhere. It's either CO2 or CO, right?
  13. So did you replace the Impreza switch with one from the Legacy kit? FWIW, a 1995 wiring diagram shows 3 wires going to the command switch from the clockspring (roll connector). Is the combination switch original to the car?
  14. It used to be the other way around. From 1995 to 2001, there were no turbo models for N. America. Plus there are no grey imports here.
  15. Maybe the purpose is to protect the brakes from road debris and/or reduce interior noise level? The outer side of the rotor is shielded by the wheel, although not so much if you have a spoked alloy type like Ron says. But the inner side is still more exposed because of the offset. These backing plates sure make it harder to clean the rotor w/o taking it off.
  16. FWIW, I replaced an inner boot with the axle still attached to the hub, but this doesn't seem to be a preferred repair method even though it's described in a factory TSB. You're OK to drive several hundred miles because there's still plenty of grease in the joint housing, the round metal part. If you caught the torn boot early, replacing just the boot might be a good idea because you'd end up with a good-as-new original factory axle. The right inner boot seems to last shorter than the rest, likely because it's next to the cat. converter.
  17. The actual pdf documents are in English. Same files as you would get from techinfo.
  18. It happened more than once that a plastic plug needed to push the switch was missing from its bracket on the pedal. Although if you have just installed the kit, the plug should still be there.
  19. I may be wrong about the hub with four studs, but loooking at front axles in the catalog of remanufactured parts at http://endwrench.com/oepropdf/remanufactured.pdf, one finds that all 1990-99 Legacy and 1993-99 Impreza models are covered with just two numbers, with one number for 1990-94 FWD Legacy and the other for the rest, including all Imprezas. Granted, they must have consolidated several OE numbers into one like in the aftermarket, but it does say something about the spline count.
  20. All 2.2 Imprezas were AWD but maybe they standardized the hubs by the time the 2.2l engine was introduced? If memory serves, 13" wheels on the base FWD model came with a hub that had 4 studs. By 1995, they did away with it. In any case, I just hope what I saw in the manual will apply to the Legacy.
  21. For Impreza, this probably holds true for earlier 1.8l models. The '95 FSM says both axles have 25 splines.
  22. A FSM for 1995 Impreza does show an axle with three bands, identifying it as 87AC-25. I believe it's a FWD axle and would be the same as one for FWD Legacy. If so, you need FWD boots. Between the two kinds of axles, the splined ends are the same on both sides but apparently the thick axle comes with bigger CV joints. Maybe it was later used on some 2.5 models? Just speculating. The axle with two bands is called 82AC-25.
  23. You can get them from discount dealers for about $80 but there will be shipping cost.
  24. Odometer reading seems strange, but the picture isn't sharp enough to be sure.
