AWD/4WD Impreza, it works! WHOAH! (4EAT = AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, not 5spd)
HA HAHAHAHA HHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was a good burn! Well, If I still had my 4EAT Impreza, or a 4EAT for that matter, I would be doing this mod. Good info to know regardless though, good work!

A grinding or whirring noise
I am pretty sure the 98 Forester still used drum brakes in the rear. It is possible that the shoes are not fully retracting, for whatever reason, and rubbing against the drum. I guess I would try and gently pull the parking brake up while driving to see if the noise changes, but make sure you keep your finger on the button so you don't engage the ratcheting mechanism. Can you "feel" anything when you do this? You could also stick your finger through the rim to touch the drum after driving...If one is really warm and the other isn't too bad, then that may help guide you in the right direction. If it isn't your brakes, then it is the wheel bearing. 1998 Foresters love to chew them up and spit them out. Take care, Kevin

I'm not bustin' your chops, but there is no sense in creating new threads about issues that have been covered recently Happy Holidays!

First time Subie owner needs snow tire advice
kevinsUBARU replied to motorhead53's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had to borrow my moms 03 Outback during our last snow storm. Yes, I felt confident driving normal highway speeds on snowpack, but when I had to pull into my driveway, I managed to get it stuck about 4 times. I finally got it up, and went and picked up my 01 Legacy L wagon since it's service was finished. I have 4 Winterforce snow tires that I got from http://www.tirerack.com . I had absolutley no problem with my car in the foot of snow. any kind of snow tire > stock tires

Another head gasket bites the dust? MY2001 Legacy
kevinsUBARU replied to kevinsUBARU's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSo I just called them...they cleaned it up, added the additive, and told me to bring it back in in a few thousand miles. Hmmm.... So they add the additive AFTER there is a known external leak. Anyone want to take a guess at the odds of it actually working? I'm thinking it won't and I really don't want it to...

kevinsUBARU replied to PetterFan's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAlpineRaven: In that era of Legacys, there were no turbo models available on US shores. So Petter, you can use any 15" wheel your heart desires Take care, Kevin

Another head gasket bites the dust? MY2001 Legacy
kevinsUBARU replied to kevinsUBARU's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere are well over 850 topics here on the USMB that have the phrase "head gasket" in it in the New Gen forum alone. I've been here at the USMB for a loooong time...ever since the HG problems started to pop up. If someone else wrote what my symptoms were, I would say "It's the HG dude". But now that I am that dude, I really am having a hard time with it, if that is even the problem....ya know? Anyhow, she is safe and sound, anxiously awaiting diagnosis tomorrow AM. Have a happy "give peace a chance day" (here in Woodstock). Take care, Kevin

Another head gasket bites the dust? MY2001 Legacy
kevinsUBARU replied to kevinsUBARU's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI took my skid plate off and there was coolant all over it. There is no trace of leaking at the radiator hoses or timing belt cover. It is coming from the engine somewhere (obviously) and spraying back on the exhaust which is why it is smoking(duh). I'm driving it over in a few minutes and I am kind of laughing...this is my second Subaru and BOTH of them have had coolant related problems at this mileage! Why do I love these cars... Take care, Kevin
