  1. I Made a set of copper head gaskets when i was doing my testing for my custom intake and exhaust and head work porting and polishing and shaved heads and block all my other gaskets are copper my copper head gaskets failed though v2 is in the works v2 will be ringed for my next build but i have other things going on and my ea82m is on the back burner till summer mine leaked water out the bottom i only took the heads off 10-15 times with the sam3 gaskets while i worked all the bugs out of my ea82m build the last 18k was on felpro gaskets and the rod bearings failed before the head gaskets but all the other copper gaskets are holding even after going on and off 10-15 times i just coat them with copper gasket dressing each time i reuse them been there did that too
  2. The webber can provide the corect air fuel ratio the makuni carb wont been there did that 20 years ago while you were still sucking tit on my volkswagons swaped to the webber to fix its issues this isent new its its older than you are
  3. Port them up get the ports.as close as you can dont worry if there a.bit.off the unequel lenght header makes every ports path diferent anyway so close is good enuff i shortened my valve steams and reground my valves for.better flow and polish the exhaust side the best you can and the cumbustion chamber port match everything and grind the weld bead smooth on the inside of the header after the cat go to a 2" to the muffler and 2.5 out the back of the car in my opinion anyway not worth anything other than ive done it and had good results
  4. "Off topic, but if you lost that much MPG i think something else might be at play. Did you advance your timing enough? Did you follow the mixture control settings properly? Is your jetting correct? After ten years, I’m sure your Weber could benefit from a seal change and a good internal cleaning. " I havent touched it at all my vws are just yard art now days i just keep them running to move around the yard
  5. I have the webber on my vw although its absolutly reliable and works great its not very fuel efficiant i lost around 7 mpg and i dident gain any power but it always runs however mine floods out real easy probably needs a float adjustment or something but ive been running it for 15 years and never touched 1 screw on it since installing it i still say the msd ignition is the biggest power gain you can get for the money i got mine for $100 i know there cheaper than that now it hooks up with no modification just take the wires off the coil hook them to the msd box and the box to power and coil and you have around 10-15% more low end torque it wont increese peek torque just bring it on alot sooner with 30" tires i went fron struggling in 1st gear to being able to do a second gear start with eazy from just adding the ignition box
  6. Go with fuel injection from a ea82 and or upgrade your ignition system to a msd style ive had tbe msd cure alot of carb issues and it make it feal like its got more low end but realy its just burning the fuel more efficently it was by far the best doller per dohnut power upgrade i did to my rigs another cheap trick is to raise the carb by puting a spacer under it that allows the air and fuel to mix before the mixture turns the corner while also providing a.higher volume of air right when the throtle opens making the car feel more responsive if you want to spend some money ram enginering makes intake spacers a cat back exhaust would help to a electric fan should free up a few hp removing any extra waight makes a big differance if your gona go in to the motor than port polish and shave both the deck and the heads and new pistons to raise comprestion alittle but remeber each mod only dose a little bit so the more mods the more noticable the new power will be
  7. I think it would depend on weather or not your using the ea82 controle arms and or strut top mounts the ea82 set up is wider than the ea81 the ea82 top hat has 3 bolts and i think you can manipulate the position a little bit since you need to drill new holes anyway if your building the lift your self just get extra steel in case you need to redo it if you take the strut off the car and use some pipe for mock up bolt it to the hub and plumb up the tire set your ride hight with a jack and mesure the angle of the pipe it will atleast get you in to the ball park or leave the strut on jack to new ride hight plumb tire measure the distance from the mount holes to where the new studs are gona go then devide by 4 then figure out the angle using math stuff i prefer mock up and measure method over the math method but both will get you close enuff to awnser your question
  8. Its sposed to be a sealed system to stop the fuel from evaporating but other than that its probly spilling out of the filler pipe also a bad o2 sensor would cause that to a point maybe the o2 sensors wires got snagged on something and pulled out of there socket wich would cause the computer to go in to a run rich mode or maybe a combo of things but thats what comes to mind right off the top of my head
  9. Ford tempo springs read jeseks post for specs i can add 90+ nissan 300zx front struts work great on the rear of our l series wagons you just need the top hats from your old struts the shafts are alot bigger and the dampening is better and i think the traval is the same as stock making them alot stronger with out lossing traval
  10. For the air box pull the pasenger fender and remove all the intake piping it will help alot with throtle responce ther3s only a 1" opening to feed the motor leave the under hood piping alone its fine for what the motor is capable of
  11. Dude cut your self some lift blocks about $5 worth of steel and pick up a set of old chevy or toyota 6lug wheels and tires i got mine for $100 the best mod you can do for the gl10 off road the plans for the simple 2" lift are still running around on this site somewere im sure with a alittle sawsall work you can fit 30" tires
  12. You can always cut your springs if you want stiffer springs the ford tempo springs fit the front and cut those there cheap also honda springs for the rear i bought my tempo springs on ebay for like $20 A pair just take a little bit off at a time used springs would be best as there already broke in you will still have camber issues though you can always get new used springs cheap if you mess up
  13. Considering i can sell my truck for what i payed for it and insurance is only 400 a year newer trucks are awsome but you will never get your money back most of the people i know who have newer trucks spend more on maintaining them than i paid for my truck even my old landlords toyota is breaking down he just replaced the rear end and now the trans is out over 5k in repairs thats almost twice what i paid for my truck i did have to replace a water pump and a manual fuel pump and the turbo is almost ready for a rebuild as is the injector pump but even after all that im still under the repair costs of the toyota its old and kinda slow but it pulls reliably thats all i need in a truck if its a daily driver and not just a tow pig the newer truck will save gas and be more comfertable with more bells and whistles i guess it comes down to are.you gona work on it or have someone else maintain it a old truck cost way to much to pay someone to maintain it for you the newer trucks need less maintinance but cost 3 times as much when they do break down my friends 2003 chevy cost 2k to replace the fuel pump and it had to be towed home more money towed to the shop more money so it cost as much to change a fuel pump on a 2003 silverado as it cost me to buy my truck when my pump went out it would still run just was hard to start
  14. My 4eat looks huge next to my ea82 5mt as for the ea81 its been 20 years since i had one i just know there smaller than a ea82 how much room is there for a ej in the brat with out cutting or hammering i figure the engine needs more.room than the trans thats why i sead 8" but 5 would probably work but back to its been 20 years since ive even worked on a ea81 and i cant remeber what engines fit and what ones need clearencing seeing as how 5he op dident give any engine info im just asuming its the one that wont fit and would then need to be mounted under th3 stock frame rails hence needing alot of lift
  15. I would say no i tow a 10k lb 5th wheel with my old ford f250 it dose just fine even towing up and down the sierras its not fast but but it dose the job the original owner bought it to tow a.5th wheel and thats what it did since 87 and its still towing today the turdbo is realy nice to but it will never keep up with that toyota but how fast do you want to go with that kinda load the fuel mialage might be better with the toy but the differance in price can buy alot of fuel im on the road alot and im always seing chevys dead on the side of the road with big trailers a few fords yotas and dodges all newer rigs all towing abou5 5he same load as me i just keep chugg that old freight train on down th3 tracks even pulling 10k up a 9% grade any good maintained truck sould do you good but dont kill your self getting a newer truck cause there not any more reliable than the older properly maintained ones but if you feel beter about a newer truck then go for it just stay away from the ford 6.0h no or any newer ford or chevy diesels
  16. Ya i would like a 6mt brz trans for my outback project then run it to a tcase
  17. derlin is to hard it wont allow for any flex at all might as well just weld it solid at that point the polyurithane has just a little bit of give thats why they use it for replacement performance bushings and you can get just about any size you want because they make replacement bushings for just about averything mine were for a datsun or something i just had to adjust the center hole size but polyurithane is very easy to work with you dont need a laith more than likely you will find the size you need just search by the size and not the vehicle and if you cant find the exsact size look for the od you need you also might have to trim them down width wise a simple hack saw cuts it very easy it drills easy if the center hole is to big sleave it with some kind of pipe its not a big deal dont over think it it just absorbs shock and twist loads so you dont feel them in the car even if you did weld it solid i dought you would be able to tell the differance in the long run the metal might fatiuge faster but urithain is the way to go best of bothworlds stiff but still flexable
  18. Ive made a few bushings ive used rtv ultra black silicone before also tire black rubber tire repair to make bushings and rebuild tire sidewalls on off road racing tires when i worked for goodyear tires also old tires can be used for bushings i do that alot too ive made suspention bushings out of old tires and had them hold good 5he best though is the urithane its cheap easy to work with and outlasts any rubber bushing also they look good lol thats whats realy important right lol the urathain is the way to go i got a 10 pack of urithain bushings on ebay for like $10 when i started to built my long arm kit for my loyale you can get it in just about any size you need i would order the size of the outer diamiter and drill the center out to fit your pin or use 2.bushings one inside the other one thing though if you replace the bushing on the diff with urithane you should also change the bushings on the mustash bar aswell if you just shore up your current bushing with liquid rubber of some sort you probably dont need to mess the mustash bar bushings all the diff bushings should be the same material or else you risk breaking something else not that these rigs realy have enuff power to break stuff but its a posability
  19. Like i sead in one of my first post i think your working with the wrong rig for your driving style but i have to hand it to you as you have done one H E L L of a job adapting it to sute your needs thats 5he closest thing ive seen to a trophy truck out of a subaru i also think if you dedicate it to off road use you can tune it.to do even better i know it can be done and with less were and tear i know you dont think so but street/highway use is very hard on off road rigs in my exsperiance anyway the way i look at it the subaru is like a jack of all trades master of non they will do alot just wont do any of it realy well if you want something that dose one thing or another alot better it wont do other things as good as the roo so it comes down to what do you realy want to do and build for that and deal with the short comings when doing other stuff its all a compramise give up alitle here and gain alittle
  20. I would guess you would need around 8" of lift to get the 4eat and a ej in a brat with out hammering and cutting the body maybe 6" with some sledge work 2" i think would need some cutting and rebuilding but i havent had a ea81 in 20 years so im just guessing
  21. Once you compress them and get them hot they stick if they dont get hot they might be reusable but that depends on alot of things and after a few time they wont seal anymore
  22. Im not sure of the thickness of the copper i use copper isent cheap you wont be able to get the material for under $12 but copper makes the bast gaskets end of story and being reuse able is a plus when i was making my custom intake i had the intake off 12-15 times so thats almost $200 in gaskets if i used factory gaskets everytime i pulled the intake hence the reusable gaskets time is money yes for sure but in the r&d i was doing copper made way more sence i am retiered so the whole time issue is out the window i just enjoymaking my own stuff and when it works better than whats on the market i get stoked on it i enjoy building stuff i see in the stores and or websites the cerial box gaskets do work just fine ive had to do repairs at sea and they work just fine you cant always go to the parts store sometimes you have to make stuff work the copper wire is a thang though its called ringing the gasket you use coper wire rings around ports mostly used for extremely high boost engine headgaskets the wire bonds to the sheet material and makes one hell of a seal
  23. I Think its more about the prep and how the gaskets are installed ive never had any issues with any gasket ive used on the intake i make my own and there far from perfect but seem to work as good as factory so far anyway
