  1. lower the good one, lift the rusty one? sell its body kit and keep the wing so it still looks RXish. just a thought.
  2. you stoled you a truck! buy your neighbor some beer. a 6pk a day for a year ought to even out the deal a little
  3. nngh, slow. my car's front end is still all apart (excuse: i'm waiting for the lift to arrive so i don't have to take it apart again), and I've done next to nothing on the wiring. I am in the process of getting my flywheel adapted, and I am going to cut out my adapter plate this week Oh, and I need to reinstall my heater core and dash. argh.
  4. aside from changing the sensors and accessories, the japanese use a paraffin based motor oil as they have little to no domestic petroleum resources. you may want to accelerate your oil change schedule at first and run some seafoam and/or MMO to clean out the crankcase.. cleaning and refilling the hydraulic lifters would be a great idea... good luck.
  5. this is a good service to offer. only a few have made their own wheels and i hear it can be a lot of work. they look good too. i have converted my project car to 5-lug wheels, but whenever i get a set of wheels, i like to have a matching 5th for a full size spare. i'm guessing that's $400 for a set of 4 wheels? i think you should list prices for singles too, or a package of 5. maybe offer them non-powdercoated in case someone wants to paint theirs or chrome them...
  6. Q: how do you know if a hippie's been sleeping on your couch? A: he's still there!
  7. YOU SUCK. but only because i'm jealous. thrown rod, huh? I smell an EJ22 conversion pending...
  8. they're supposed to be screwed to the door panel from the back. either the fiberboard in the door panel or the plastic threads in the back of the switch are broken and someone glued them back on. you can probably get switches from a parts yard. If the backing is torn, you'll have to come up with something. perhaps you can patch it somehow.

*hides* I want to go work on my wagon this sunday, and I need to take pics of the GL10 seats for someone.. I'm going to pull n save saturday so i could drop the camera off on the way out, and get it back that evening before/during work downtown?
  11. yeah, try putting in a quart of ATF for a couple of days.
  12. I'm going to check on this tomorrow and I think they're $120 now.
  13. hi and welcome. regarding the heater: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27537&highlight=heater+core don't forget the bleach BTW I tore my dash out to change the heater core (haven't gotten the new foam yet so it's still apart) and it really is this easy. you may not have to remove the center heater box with the actual core - depending on where the mouse set up shop - but you might anyway just to check out your core. low miles are nice but that doesn't affect the car's overall age.

    ha. ha. ha.
  15. DAMN. that is one impressive project. I want your transmission. please send it to me; I'm in 99220. my GL10 wagon is similar in some ways.. it is (slowly) receiving a 2.2 swap and it has a kevlar clutch between that and an RX transmission.. I have a pistol grip shifter from a 4WD XT with the differential lock wired to the pistol grip's button (a little proud of that ) I also have a 4" lift in transit right now, and I have converted the suspension to that of a Legacy so I have larger brakes and the 5-lug bolt pattern. how is the gas mileage in town with those 4.11 gears and on the highway with the forester 5th gear? I am going to be losing sleep at night now thanks to you! we need to track down this subaru savant who built this car!
  16. wow. is there anyone here who wouldn't buy that in a heartbeat "if it was closer?"
  17. wow. well it sounds like you've got it mostly figured out i hope it urns out to be as cool as it sounds. BTW those pics are postage stamp sized.. got bigger ones?
  18. what i'd be more worried about would be all the people who would see what you've done and decide to do it themselves without being as conscientious.
  19. The idea I object(ed) to is the thought of driving a dirty car though the lake. It sounds as if you are taking pains to keep the engine clean and to minimize the amount of exposure between the water and the engine, which is admirable. If you want to do this in a way that serves as an example to others, then I wouldn't really complain. I would go the extra step, if it were my car, to spray off the underside at the car wash before going into the lake. That may still wash the crap into the water, as you are correct to mention that many cities don't prevent such substances from being rinsed into the local waterways. It will at least keep the pollution with the other pollution in the city, and not spread it out by taking it to the lake. That is no worse than washing your car if you *don't* float through the lake afterward, so it really doesn't have any significant impact. One thing that can be done to minimize the impact of urban drainage is to pay attention to when it rains. I.E, don't wash your car right before or during a rain (hehe, no problem there) because the extra water from the rainfall distributes the pollutants further. Not doing laundry or showering during or right after a rain is a similar consideration. Of course you can't do that every time (I don't always..) but it's good to keep in mind.
  20. i'll bet that's the distributor gear on the cam/crankshaft. or from an old distributor. makes you glad someone decided to put a screen on the pickup tube!
  21. i know there are plenty of sketchy vehicles out there that are *designed* to be in the water but that doesn't make it OK. If this were a boating forum I'd say the same thing to the owner of such a craft. I've even mentioned before that I don't feel OK about the idea of driving through rivers and such while on offroading runs. Like it or not, cars and the petroleum economy are slowly on their way out. it is in every auto enthusiast's best interest to consider what they can do to make the hobby more acceptable. that to me means minimizing its impact on the environment and giving its opponents less ammunition. Yes, it is a sacrifice in that rivers and creeks are a fun challenge to drive through, but it is also as easy as consulting a map and planning a 4WD run that doesn't "need" to go through water to complete the route. It's empowering ourselves to preserve the hobby before someone else can use such practices against us. Who wants to go swimming and come out of the lake with oily hair? Imagine the positive reception that we'd get if we could say to everyone, "look: we no longer drive through rivers, and we organize trail cleanups and restorations along with our 4WD events". Pillars of the community and such. Adjustments like these will enable us to insure the longevity of our hobby.
  22. Eric, I hope you're celebrating the same way I am
  23. I've got to say that I'm not a big fan of this idea for two major reasons: One: the car's weight is not balanced in a way that it will be stable and safe to pilot as a boat. Amphibious cars are designed to be stable in the water as well as streetable. You'd have to add a lot of weight to the bottom and rear of the car to add stability while floating, and that will create its own problems. Two: I think it is environmentally irresponsible to drive a street car in a body of water. Think of it as using the lake or river as your own private carwash. All that grease and oil on the bottom of your engine and chassis ("all" subarus leak oil, it's no secret) is going to end up in the water, as well as the exhaust pollutants. Our rivers and lakes are having enough problems caused by callous industrial practices, and I'm sure the fish would prefer that you didn't expose them to this crud. I don't know about the geology where you're from, but Spokane sits on top of one of the world's largest freshwater aquifers, and it is where we get our drinking water. Burlington Northern just built a railroad refueling depot right on top of it, and of course the damned thing leaks like a sieve, so now our aquifer has f#$%ing diesel fuel in it. Of course your subaru is not capable of causing problems of that scale, but the point is that petroleum products and public water resources should be kept separate. It only takes a miniscule amount of petroleum contaminants to pollute large quantities of water. I for one would be one of the people sure to scowl at someone driving their car around in the lake. I hope you don't do this.
  24. well, you have the impreza spindle and ball joint and strut. that saves you a lot of piecing together. the XT6 spindle, the Legacy spindle, and the Impreza spindle all use the same ball joint. you can use the XT6 caliper on any of those spindles to retain the front E-brake setup, as the Impreza and Legacy brake systems have the E-brake in the back. Or you can improvise your own setup. as far as what you've got now... if you drill out the brat control arm it will accept the larger ball joint in the impreza knuckle. you can then keep the impreza strut and put the 2-bolt EA81 strut tower mount on top of it. I have been told to match the spindles, rotors, and axles all from the same type of car for proper fit. You will have to use custom axles because the EA81 cars are too narrow. the EA82 cars can use the EJ axles because they are wide enough. in other words, there's not quite as much piecing together as you might think. so, if you want to use STI brakes, you will have to reengineer the E-brake cables' routing, as that will dictate that you run a rear E-brake setup. You will not be able to use STI axles for the reason noted above. If you want to use STI control arms then you are on the right track with what you're doing, I guess.
