  1. Date: Saturday April 3rd, 2004. (See bottom for date conflict, we may adjust date to April 10, 2004 instead, or April 17...) Location: Monona County, Iowa is the area. This county is located between Sioux City and Omaha/Council Bluffs. County features Preparation Canyon State Park and is part of the "Loess Hills." (pronounced "Luss") Loess Hills Other Loess Hills Attractions/Lodging This landform is unique to anywhere except China. The terrain is not typical flat farmland like the state is known for. The plan is do a tour drive of the area either originating at the State Park or ending at the State park, depending upon how many people are coming, when they are coming, and what direction they are primarily coming from. The drive will include interstate highway, gravel, County Road blacktop, small town streets and dirt roads. April is known for muddy conditions and we will try to allow for people that don't have 4wd Subaru's, or Subaru's that prefer to not get dirty, to have options for meeting up with us. After the tour drive we will do a show and shine back at the park. RC Brat races too. We will probably stop in Onawa during the drive to give everybody a chance to wash their Subaru's at a carwash if they wish. The State Park features include a campground. Iowa has pretty good campgrounds at its parks usually. Weather permitting some of us may be camping the night after the meet. Maps: 1) General Area so you can figure out where this is. 2) Detailed road map of the area. (Yellow highlighted areas are DIRT roads.) 3) Planned route for the "dirt road" portion of the tour is in orange alongside the roads on this map image I have added a Poll requesting an "RSVP" for the Event. Please comment in the thread here.
  2. Details on the meets tentative plans are coming in another post in the next day or so.
  3. What that a 1/2" breaker bar you would put in the square end then?
  4. Hey no worries, I will measure my ea81 flywheel if I can find it so we can know the weight gain/loss from doing these swaps.
  5. I bet you have a vac line that isn't right causing that. Look for one that isn't plugged in or one thats plugged into a solenoid/vac switch that isnt electrically plugged in.
  6. It is sacrilidge. The axles will slide right on. You should consider doing a 5spd 4wd Ea82 Trans changeover if finding a transmission in your area is the problem.
  7. You should use PM for this, or email him using the email address on ozified.com
  8. Due to the hump in the swaybar the trans sits tilted. I don't think there is anything wrong with Jerry's kit, all of it would line up if it weren't for the hump. I guess I might have to install the trans and then resort to cutting the swaybar and welding a straight piece in instead after i get the car rolling again. (no welder here) Any more ideas?
  9. People have done conversions to make them a 5 lug. The rear is rather easy but the front is complicated and requires a lot of parts from what is mainly an xt6.
  10. Yup, was told to use the MT 4wd 4spd one. The auto one wouldn't have accepted the MT crossmember.
  11. Im putting an RX 5spd FT4wd box in my 83 Turbo wagon (former auto 3spd) and I can't seem to get it to line up with where it should on the car. I got a 5spd kit from Bratsrus1 and have mounted the trans crossmember and such to the trans and then mounted it in and it almost lines up but the tail of the trans hits on the front swaybar. That is the front swaybar out of an 84 4wd 4spd dual range.. The top 3 pics in this album illustrate the problem area rather well. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo50 Thanks in advance for the help.
  12. Ive got a cluster here if you can't find one.
  13. Does anybody here know the length of their car's rear driveshaft? Measured from where its first visable to the flange that bolts to the rear differential would be the prefered measurement.
  14. Guess the days of picking on Justy owners are over...this is a class act.
  15. That sounds like pretty respectible mileage but I haven't driven at 8000 feet in a car equipped to do so before so I wouldn't be a good judge of that. Does a car usually get better/worse/same mileage at altitude? NGK plugs would be worth the small price to try out, especially with amount of backing they get around here on the board(me included). Reread the question and am a little confused are you going for more pep or more mileage?
  16. On the early Subaru ones do have to be turned to get them to go inward, if you can get them to go in with a C-Clamp something is wrong with it. 90 and later Legacy models have the type you can C-Clamp.
  17. It sounds like you might have gotten EA81 engine wires, they tend to be too short as the distributor is on the right rear of the engine instead of directly in the center like ea81's. Since you have an 85 thats highly likely to be confused due to the overlap in models of GL. I haven't heard of the brand of wires you are talking about though. A google search left me wondering if you were talking about taylorcables.com but I couldn't see anything that was Specifically for a Subaru on their site. AdvanceAuto has an inexpensive brand called Xact that tends to have OEM length wires and lifetime guarantee. $14 with tax or so.
  18. If I lived in your area I would head over to Pick N Pull and get a caliper off another Subaru and swap it. I think thats going to solve the problem.
  19. Auto parts stores tend to stock them for Ea81 powered cars so give it a try with yours. I had to special order one at Advance auto but it was like 9 bucks. I didnt end up getting it cuz mine is a turbo and needs a shorter one but it was right for the carb model.
  20. I think the dash will pretty much be okay if it has an analog dash. The oil pressure readout has nothing to point to though. Theres huge differences in the wiring and I think you should re-think undoing the turbo setup. If you need a distributor and an ECU that would be a lot easier to get a hold of than re-wiring the car. Both of these items can be re-built and I have a hard time believing you need both of them cuz how do you know you need one without the other working?? Idea: Sell the carb motor to somebody and use the $ to buy used or remanufactured parts for the turbo.
  21. Details on what kind of oil, how much, and what filter were used will help. # of miles or time since last oil change too please.
  22. Hey, I would like to know the weight of the flywheels for the engines below (4wd models prefered). I found some posts in search saying X clutch is 4 lbs lighter, etc but no actual weights. Ea81, ea82, and an ER27. Im not asking for how much yours weighs after lightening. Id like to try to figure out what weight flywheel would be ideal in this engine/trans setup for a street application since they never made a model with the config I am building. (83ea81T wagon with Rx ft4wd trans.) If you have installed any of these into an 83 or 84 EA81T engine with a 5spd 4wd trans and can give me your gut feelings on how it drives on the street that would be appreciated too. Thanks!
  23. Thats pretty funny actually, glad they turned up. Not many old Subarus have their original owners manuals anymore but if yours does check to see if it has the key code written in it. Also check your keys for keycodes and jot it down while you have the chance.
  24. Youre sure its not a wire or plug gone bad? Sorry just wishful thinking maybe I didn't read something completely.
  25. I suspect they removed the wrong drain plug. Previous incidents show that they have drained the front differential oil and put none back in there but instead put oil into the engine. The only way to know for sure is to drain the oil and measure the amount of oil in the catch pan. When its 7 quarts or more take it to firestone and demand new oil and a refund on the previous service. (thats what I would do at least). They have contaminated the new oil by mixing it with the old and now you dont have any clean oil and thats what you paid to have changed. Driving a car that is overfilled is twice as hard on an engine as driving it with a quart low. If you have a Subaru dealer in the area use them instead. They use an OEM filter, drain plug crush ring, and oil that is appropriate for the car. They also know where the drain plug is. Good luck!
