Saw a Brat with an EJ engine
MorganM replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes yes! I'd like to know what he did for transmissions. Did he swap in the whole drive train or did he adapt the bellhousings to his old Brat tranny? Any cutting to make it fit? how about the main crossmember? Thx! -
A lot of times the dim light is caused by rusted reflectors. The gasket between the lens and the reflector wears out, water gets in and the rust begins Pull off your lenses and take a peek. All the wiring in the world wont matter if the reflectors are rusted up.

When will it ever end?!

I like those neat oranges you see on like the new 350Z. http://www.nissanusa.com/m/cma/i/335/3350z_gal_med11.jpg -
Still havent secured mine and its a couple years old now. I offroad it all the time and for a while it wasnt even in the bracket; just flopping around the engien bay. I'm with archemitis on this; they just break. I've had 2 OEM ones go out for no visible reason. If they typicaly lasted "20 years" parts stores wouldnt stock them becuase ppl would rarely be buying them. I'll just replace my Accell Super Stock with whatever is cheapest when it breaks

If the vehicle came with AC should be able to just hook up the OEM secondary electric fan and it will automaticly come on when the AC is on. The other one (main fan) you will want to tie into your ignition switch circut if you want it to turn on/off with the ignition switch. Personally I run my main fan on a lighted toggle switch. The light helps me remember not to leave it on

Hey I got an idea; lets compare some more modified vehicles to stock vehicles! =P Apples, Oranges, you know the rest... My wife would kill me if I spent 2500 on my subaru. I spent $85 on a 4WD D/R tranny, $30 for the whole rear subframe assembly/drivetrain, $300 for the BYB 3" lift, $200 on tires, and $150 for pug rims. Budget offroad

So how long can your car run without coolant?
MorganM replied to Danbob99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya that little hose sucks I remeber just getting my EA82 all back in and fired up. Ran like a top during warm up. Was takling to someone while it was ideling and then I see coolant leaking from my fresh rebuild!!!! It was just that stupid little hose that had popped off =P -
I've had insulators crack when trying to remove them. Putting it in you might have gave it a very small crack and its just now getting worse with use (lots of vibration there) Could also just be a less then perfectly formed insulator which is now giving out on you. They are pretty cheap for a reason; they are cheaply made. I'd replace it before you have a stuck plug on your hands

After offroading this SAT Archemitis and I swung by a truck scale. I weighed out at 2780 lbs with half tank of gas, 3" lift kit (heavy!) 29" tires, 15" steel rims, full tool box, box of larger tools (BFH, harcksaw, etc) and nobody inside the car. This weight was not including any recovery gear also. Sitting kinda heavy No wonder it's such a dog on the road! haha I'll have to weight it once I get some recovery gear in it and maybe with someone sitting in it to get a real total running weight. As a side note my 2004 KIA Rio sedan weights 1600 lbs.... time to boost that thing up!

Welcome Some people here have just chopped the springs and had good results. Check out the Search feature and I bet you'll find lots of info or atleast who to talk to. Peace

I say if it drives 100 miles it will drive 10,000; rage it! I've helped Archemitis swap in a junkyard SPFI EA82 and watch him drive to Texas and back (from Minnesota) 5 days after the swap. His cousin drove a gen2 brat from MN, to Texas, and back to MN and this thing was JUNK. The only thing holding the body together was the drive train! I've driven mine 100 miles mixing coolant and oil the whole time when the headgasket blew. They are TOUGH! Sounds like you have been under the hood plenty and have a good idea what shape it's in. I have faith that you can make that BRAT get to WCSS6 under its own power; all it takes is for you to have the same! Good luck!

Quit reving it to 6 grand in every gear Nice one! Never seen a broken cam on a Subaru. Seen a few at the junkyard. I'm amazed it didnt trash your valve train on that side... or did it? Any fun stuff in the bottom of the oil pan?

Ticking Moter? heres the trick..
MorganM replied to $ubaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Never had a ticking valve train that SeaFoam wouldnt fix! -
Archemitis has done an MPFI swap into his hatchback. Send him a PM or Email I bet he could help.

1990 loyale wagon, can't get the hood to open
MorganM replied to sunking247's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When this happend to me I had to remove the front grill. Then you can barely slip your fingers between the AC condensor and the latch. Feel where the cable goes into the latch and find where it actually hooks to the latch. That is where you wanna PULL HARD. Might help to push down on the hood while you pull; that can relieve some of the pressure. As for a new one that's kinda steep for a hood release cable. Especially when a set of hood pins is $10 and about 20 minutes to install May seem funny to have hood pins on your Subaru but they arent just for hotrods. My wife's '91 Buick has a defective hood latch. After replacing it 2 times I just put on hood pins. I think a hood release cable is something you coud honestly do yourself. Toughest part I would think is routing it back upto the hood latch. Give it a go; worse case you gotta have someone finish it? Good luck! -
I'm with GD here. Sounds like it's getting burnt off. Prolly wouldnt even see the smoke with that little of oil consumption. Tha'ts realy not an alarming rate of oil consumption but it is noticable. I've had PCV valves get stuck open causing above average oil consumption. Might start there. Also smell your exhuast. Even though you cant see the smoke I bet you can smell burnt oil. It has as pretty signature smell. How's the oil pan gasket? Look really good with a flash light up between the pan and main crossmember. That's another trouble spot for oil leaking. Good luck and I wouldnt be too woried unless the rate of consumption is increasing quickly
