THey aren't claming to be for the street I'm a little sceptical here... It straps on? I dunno if Id strap that onto Subaru's flimsy excuse of a bumper.

86 rusty red gl hatchback not running

Here's my super general advice on no start situations. Air Fuel Spark Timing Figure out which one(s) are failing and go from there. Good luck -
That paint job is high speed Miles

One bolt on and go option is the Peugoet 504 and 505 rims. The came in a few flavors... steel, aluminum, different styles, 14" or 15".... I run a set of pug 15" steel rims. Really expands your options for tires going upto 15" as thats the 'standard' light truck size. Where it limits you is width of the tire due to the 4"s of backspacing. On my EA82 wagon the widest I could go was 9.5"... even then it was REALLY REALLY close; just a difference in tread pattern might have made them rub. This is where the advantages of going to 6bolt comes in; you can get rims with less backspacing and therefore allow wider tires. Good luck !_! No worries about looking like a newb here I think youll find here, unlike a lot of other online forums, we are quite accepting of new comers and happy to help them out. Afterall you prolly would have went and bought some rims and found the the hard way; had you not come here and asked

Upsizing the oil filter possible?
MorganM replied to freedster's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't really buy into the theories presented. That aside, it's not a bad thing to do this mod as long as its a quality filter; as Archemitis has noted. One thing I have noticed about the EA82 oil filter is that it's practicly double the size of filters on other engines. It's 75% larger than the oil filter on my wife's 3.3 liter Buick engine. Most certainly 100% larger than the oil filter on my KIA's 1.5 liter. Should be easy to find a larger one. The thread pitch and diameter is a common size. All you'd have to do is find one longer. I'd go to the parts store, grab the proper one and start comparing to others for one with the same thread and diamter but longer. Let us know what ya find -
Prolly the best and least invasive idea yet

Best All-Round Tires for EA82
MorganM replied to 85Sub4WD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For your rims its tougher to find GOOD tires. I'd find the meanest Mud and Snow (M+S) rated tires you can find. All Seasons usually suck unless you spend lots of money. Just Snow tires will wear out too fast. -
While tech inspection regs say nothing about a cat; it is federaly mandated already that a cat exist. One of those things that depends on how anal the inspector is that day :-\ Might just look at your muffler and say "yep" or he might bust out the mirror on a stick and go around your whole vehicle; then lecture you on federal and state statues :-p The only way around a cat, legaly, that I have found is for 'racing or event purposes'. So race cars and event trucks dont need one for the event or race. Now if you drive that vehicle on a county/state/fed road; you are then required to have one. Rules suck

Might need to trim those fenders a bit I'd wheel it !

Archemitis has had an EA82 MPFI and now an ER27 in a hatchback. It's possible

Totally agree, new hoses. You can get the metal intake tube out of the pump w/o remove the hose at all however. Just did this 2 weeks ago. Had good hoses on it so I didnt want to remove them. Unbolted the tube from the block... wiggled and pulled real hard :-p It's a tight fit! Prolly the second hardest part of the job. First being getting the old gasket off the block w/o scratching up the gasket surface.

Adjustable Timing Pulleys… who might want some?
MorganM replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Your esstimated price sounds resonable at $150 - $200. Maybe you could do a core charge of $50... so $150 for ppl who supply you pullies OR $200 for those that want to keep their stock ones. Breaking down the price like you did really helps ppl understand where cost comes from. The advantage is proven in my book. I remember on the old boards the ppl who did this noted significant increase at the 'seat of their pants' dyno This mod has been done on other engins also; it works Its kinda funny you made this thread; not 12 hours after Arch and I were talking about this very same thing in my garage! -
Yeah it's kinda weird eh? I read the reg on it and said "okay imma find me one of them fancy federaly approved spark arrestor mufflers for an ORV"..... dug around for hours. Only one I found that said it was an actual spark arrestor muffler designed for a car/truck was by Super Trapp. From talking to local Jeep duders it seems that they all pass tech inspection with anything but a straight-through glass pack. For instance the Flowmaster 40 series I guess is a spark arrestor muffler. Is it federaly approved? I dunno! :-p Thankfully I don't think its that big a deal; DNR/USFS just dont want straight pipes, open headers, or straight-trhough glass packs out on the trails. Time to price out some Flowmasters I guess

Ah so you scored that fine rig! Good form sir. And yes; offroading by yourself w/o recover gear is asking for trouble. Atleast you had a cell phone and good friends just a phone call away. I should get me one of them thar fancy cordless phones Got a CB but nobody uses those hardly anymore Time to weld'er'up

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/TechReference/index.html OMG a link to Pirate 4x4? Blasphemy! I'll save my opinion on their forums but they have VERY excellent technical articles. Hit that link and look at the "Steel" section. You wont regret it

I know exactly what you mean; I was in the same boat. Thats why I went to true duals. Simple to make and cheap on materials. Y pipes are super rare in MN becuase the EPA will not allow the resale of a used catalytic converter so junkyards cut them out and scrap them. I would still highly recomend a custom or OEM Y pipe. They are not that hard to make now that I've done one. There are several ways of doing it also. I guess if you are dead set on the duals; bolt them on and find out what I'm talking about Might not be a good comparison as a rotted out Y pipe and exhuast system is going to be just as bad as true duals. After I bolted on my custom Y pipe and felt the first pull in 1st gear I knew what I was missing. Do what you will

I remember back on the EZboard a couple people did this for their own application. If memory serves they did 3 degree advance at the cams. Results were good performance but 'ran hot'. Those are well crafted; good work man. Hopefully Tex and Shadow can test them fully and find out if the engine will run hotter. After all the bugs are worked out this should be another real performance upgrade for the EA82. I'm continually ammazed by the diversity of knowledge and craftsmanship we have in the USC. While a lot of clubs just buy bolt ons from some 3rd party manufacturer; we have people who love Subarus so much they craft quality upgrades and share them with the community to further the greatness of Subaru -
Gettin' a little tired of my wagon!
MorganM replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I swear '88s suffer from Subaru Middle Child Syndrome. Had many words with mine and almost kicked her to the curb on more than one ocassion. Seen many on here fruastrated with their '88s. Dunno what it is... I just stuck it in the garage, ignore it for a few months, and I always came crawling back :-p Do what you must... -
Just my 2 cents but I wouldnt recomend 'true dual' exhuast on an EA81 or EA82. All you will get is excesive noise and a loss of low end torque. I've tried several true dual exhuast systems on my EA82, a custom Y pipe and now an EA81 y pipe. Y pipes are best on these engines due to the fireing order and the promotion of scavanging effect. True duals will not scavange due to the large gap in exhuast pulses from the way these engines fire. The best dual exhuast system on these, IMHO, would be a Y pipe and splitting to duals after the Y pipe. This will give you the superior function of the Y pipe and the 'cool factor' of dual exhuast

Sorry for the short notice. Totally forgot to post it here also! http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1495 30 JAN 05 at "Jeff's" place. He lives near Maple Grove which is a suburb of the Twin Cites. Email him for specific directions as he does not want to post them on the forums. His email is autocycle AT juno . com Bring your own oil and filters. We could prolly do some other wrenching too. Just nothing major where you might be stranded if repair/upgrade is not completed. Wouldnt want to impose on him due to an inoperable Subaru having to be left there. Should be a blast and hope to see some of yall there
