ARGH! EA81 oilpump STUCK!
Sweet82 replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It has been my experience that they don't like to come out. I had to pry on my pump to get it out and broke that stupid mounting plate:mad: It will be stubborn but try to not touch that stupid plate as your prying..... Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester -
The fuel pump control unit may be black or blue depending on the year. My 82 was black with a Mitsubshi logo on it, 84's are typically light blue. You must match the FPCU to the carb. They are not necessarily interchangeable. The relay for the fuel pump may be under your passenger seat? Check under the carpet for a small cylinder. Trace the wiring back and you should find it. I'd also test the wires going off the FPCU and see if it is sending 12v back to the pump?

trailer hitch on an ea81 hatch, how strong??
Sweet82 replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I made some industrial bumper reinforcing mounts. I bolted to my bumper and also bolted to the underside of the rear deck. I used a bolt plate inside the Hatch to mount the bolts on. I also ran the hitch through the rear valance to keep it close to the bumper. Never had a problem, Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester -
Clutch Cable Snapped... Yikes!
Sweet82 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My cable always seems to break while waiting to make a left hand turn in traffic. I've had to kill the car before to stop and restart with the starter motor to go.:-\ Not much fun but it works. Get use to it. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--currently on it's 4th cable since 1982 84 GL Mad Max--unknown cable count. 01 Forester--still on factory cable. -
Anyone gonna be in Moab this week? I'll be down there doing some trail ridin. Shout out if you'll be slumin around Moab, Utah this week and we'll hook up. I'll be easy to recognize, I'll be the one receiving a citation from local law enforcement representatives... Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester

First and formost, Welcome to the board! My recommendation would be to start with another Subie! Kinda joking and kinda not. A Subie will never be a perfect starting platform for a hard core rig. The older Subies adapt to light-medium duty 4wding way better than the newer ones. The main reason why is because the older Subs have a Dual Range tranny. The D/R tranny, while not perfect, is the key to getting a Subie around in the hills. Putting bigger tires on will give you a bit more clearance which is good but don't try climbing any hills! If I had a 92 Legacy, I'd put 14" Pugs and a slightly over sized tire and call it good. Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester

EA81 4sp DR tranny mounts? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10707&cat=500 Is this what a healthy tranny mount is suppose to look like? I'm wondering if there is suppose to be rubber on the top side of this? Thanks, Glenn

Looking for transportation for some rims from Washington to SLC, UT area. Anyone headed this way? Happy to help with the ever increasing cost of gas....:-\ (but that's another thread) Thanks, Glenn

I'm using a HF $39 (sale) #2000 winch. I have a snatch block to double my effective pulling power to #4000. It's cheap, small and effective. I don't intend on lifting my car, just encouraging it to move in a direction it didn't want to go... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32&cat=500&ppuser=584 Having said all that, a Quality come-a-long is a great low weight, low cost solution to moving your car in a given direction...(Note: I have folded up several cheap #2000, come-a-longs trying to pull things)

Tail lights and front running lights won't go off
Sweet82 replied to Rollie715's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have you tried switching that little red "P" switch off? It's usually on the steering column? -
No activity since 6/21/04? Sweetart...MSN and sweetart...@hotmail Yahoo! newlondonhottie . Some how with names like this, I'm thinking this person was really into things other than Subarus?

It's a good thing you were able to pull that Jeep down the hill safely in pic#25. Subaru helps out again!

I did, driving with no doors is cool. You'll loose anything that's on the floor?

Highly modifed 1982 Hatch up for grabs!
Sweet82 replied to Sweet82's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Didn't I put Serious Inquires Only? I was looking at this again yesterday and I was amazed it was still here? anyway, Bump! Any takers Emmissions has never been a problem, Never had A/C till lately, Window definately rolls down, I think you could safely say "I'm willing to part it out", Test driving it would tell all, there is a hood (not pictured) that you could lift up and look under, I have all the bumper parts and lights. I had envisioned using it in parades with legs rather than wheels. Then the rest of the time I thought it would look nice on the Deck against the house, just to make the neighbors wonder why or is that real? Still up for grabs! -
Favorite Subaru Feature.....
Sweet82 replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is a good chance that if the Subaru's didn't have the dual range transmissions of the 80's we wouldn't be talking here in the first place. I think the reason people like the cars is the fact that they can go where other cars can't. The Dual Range tranny allowed Subarus to go places where all-wheel drive cars of the same generation have now faded into obscurity. My favorite feature was the D/R tranny, followed closely by the cyclopse light. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Mad Max 01 Forester -
I never noticed that? I was thinking it just went into the front of the tranny. Now I unner-stan! I just may do that as I don't have the same linkage restrictions you folks have.
-
That's how I remember it, which brings up the question in my mind... How does one make two levers do independent things off one linkage rod? By pushing the linkage one step forward, doesn't it click the tranny into 4wd and high range? One more step forward 4wd and low range? I don't understand how you would split this out.
-
Does anyone have a tranny pic? I only remember one rod going into the tranny from the 4wd selector lever?

Bump! No takers I find that hard to believe... -
It's been my experience that the people here are decent and knowledgable folks. I think the Jerks hang out on other boards.

Really Stoopid Things We Have Done
Sweet82 replied to subbum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is a seriously funny thread:lol: I don't usually laugh at at posts but this one has me rolling on the floor!!! (and I have no leg to stand on, I'm just still trying to think of which one of my automotive mishaps is the worst? soo many to choose from...) Ok here is one of my favorites... In High School my water pump started leaking through this round hole in the bottom of the water pump? It was slowly getting worse... Being resourceful and cheap, I got some JB Weld and solved the leaking hole problem! Needless to say the pump seized-up shortly thereafter and caused all kinds of problems. So I go to the Junkyard and pickup another never knowing the real purpose of the hole in the bottom of the water pump. My "new" lasted less than a year and starts leaking...so what do I do...? Boy that JB Weld is good stuff! Shortly there after the "new" water pump starts making noise and leaking everywhere. I finally ended up getting a water pump from a parts store, never knowing till years later what that little hole is for... Glenn, Automotive Idiot! -
As usual Ferret nailed it! Even though the fuses under the dash were as the should have been, there is a second set of fuses under the hood for the clock / stereo and other vital organs. So if you blow the clock radio fuse be sure and check both fuse banks. I hoped to make enough key words that someone else could do a search and find the answer to this in the future. I had a helper in the car to assist in the in-flight inspection & repair effort. No safety violations occured while I was driving. Glenn, 2001 Forester
