Power steering issues
nipper replied to nuteeter's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it changes with the angle of the steering wheel, it is most likely the universal joint in the steering shaft. nipper

bad svx trans
nipper replied to TN svx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWOW that must be a record, it sure as heck aint the original transmission. Cracked flex plate or not, the fact that it will move only at higher rpm means the tranny is fried. A common conversion is to change the tranny and rear diff with one from a legacy. nipper

97 OBW alternator went bad
nipper replied to skibumm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubaru rebuilt. A proper rebuild (bearings brushes all electronics and everything tested and cleaned). Other rebuilds may just be the bearings, or the diod trio, or just the regulator. nipper

97 obs 5 spd bucking????
nipper replied to Pgh_Scoob's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTime to service this car. Change the tranny lube, and a tune up and new pcv vlave wouldnt be a bad idea. Inspect the rear tranny mount to see if it is broken. Test the clutch: Put the front bumper against a tree or a building. Set the parking brake. Put the car in 5th gear (running). Release the clutch. Do everything in your power to keep the car from stalling. If the clutch is good no matter what you do the car will stall. If it is worn then the car will keep running. nipper

97 OBW alternator went bad
nipper replied to skibumm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI went through quite a few 97 Alts (autozone was one) from various sources within a year. I finally said screw it and got one from subaru. It is now 3 years old and still working. Gte ont from sooby and be done with it. A weak alt can cause starting issues. nipper

car died on hiway won't restart
nipper replied to Tahoe Subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFine its the fuel pump, it is always the fuel pump. the headlight goes out its the fuel pump. The windw washer died its the fuel pump. I have had a rambler sheer a fuel pump, a fuel pump failure on a dodge, a vw, a honda, but all those cars were at least 20 years ago. the last thing i would blame on a subaru is a fuel pump without doping the proper diagnostics, otherwise its just a waste of time and money. Thats all im saying. And if someone disagrees, its the fuel pumps fault you dont agree.

How to remove really tight screws
nipper replied to idosubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs that for the screw or the engineer? i still think we kill the MF who invented shrinkwrap packaging first. May he die the death of 1000 papercuts.

car died on hiway won't restart
nipper replied to Tahoe Subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIve had them go out on my 1981, but that doesnt mean i am going to compare that a newer generation sooby. Thats just silly. I have also had them go out in a 69 rambler while driving. Just a newer gen sooby it is rare for them to just die instantly.

car died on hiway won't restart
nipper replied to Tahoe Subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGo back and put all the original parts back on the car. NEVER just change parts willie-nillie in an attempt to solve a problem without proper diagnostics. You can make things worse, to almost impossible to find the problem. Now if the car just stalled on the highway you can rule out fuel issues. Why everyone blames the fuel system first is beyond me, as on sooby's they are trouble free way beyond 200,000 miles. Do you have spark? Have you checked the codes? My gut is telling me something went wrong with the valve drivetrain. This could be a timing belt, a cam gear, or worse. Other possabilities are dead crank or cam sensor, a bad engine temp sensor. nipper

New Subaru Owner, a couple Noob questions.
nipper replied to Scrim's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe fact the shudder comes and goes is a good thing. With soobies- 1- Always make sure all four tires match, and preferably bought at the same time. 2- Autos LOVE tranny flushes at any times in thier lives. Tranny flushes cure many issues. 3- See rule 1 nipper

98 OBS rattle/clang/annoying sound
nipper replied to gwilson87's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhay are you having problems? Its just a generic O2 sensor, a universal kit. I never had a problem finding them. Look for a universal fit O2 for the rear. You will have to trim and assemble connector yourself (hence the universal) but it works fine. nipper

Emergency question re: CV joint/halfshaft
nipper replied to mva5142's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've put a few 1000 miles on a cv joint like this, and also had them snap right after making this noise. It is the luck of the draw, but if it is a sudden onset noise, odds are things are going down hill very quickly, if you just noticed it you should be ok. Just be aware of any noticable vibration. You should be OK, but once you get it home I wouldnt press your luck. nipper

How to remove really tight screws
nipper replied to idosubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGet a proper screwdriver (with a hex fitting on the shaft) to fit the head, or the proper bit. Press down on the screwdriver while torquing the scredriver with a wrench. The longer the shaft of the scredriver the better. Also with one person applying torque to the screwdriver (with the wrench) and holding the handle, hit the head of the screwdriver with a hammer. This is where a good screwdriver is important. nipper

So... wtf is this black box?
nipper replied to gwilson87's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWow i am impressed. lojac has been around for a while, yet there is very little information on what it physically looks like on the net. I googled lojac and these mystery boxes come up on dodge, VW, Honda and other forums. The same descriptions of the mystery boxes show up, pretty much in the same locations. I thought they were hidden better in the car. It is a lojac. nipper

Turning on and off ABS on '97 Outback sport
nipper replied to zyewdall's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNot really a fair comparison to base the engine alone on. The older sooby has differnt gear ratios and smaller tires which make a big differnce, plus they were alot lighter. A 2.2 can handle a real dual range nicely. The modern (aus) dual ranges from what I have heard isnt worth the expense since there isnt really alot of differnce in gearing. I may be wrong on this. Killing the ABS in 4wd low is an excellent idea. nipper

From our cousins ...
i disagree. It is a site that has users post their favorite trails. Since it is brand new people havent had a chance to add to its library yet. It's like calling wikipedia a failure after its second day.... "Simply, Trail Tracker is both a user-generated trail guide and an interactive tool geared toward improving the planning and sharing of off-road excursions. Drivers can create visual interactive trips by uploading GPS data and photos" and GOD i hate that inane "fail" raiting. nipper
