  1. Gross, it looks like subaru wrtoe a how to for the driveway replacement of a DOHC timing belt. http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/StepEWAug07.pdf here is a SOHC http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/TBeltEWWin05.pdf nipper we should make these links a sticky.
  2. Yup thats why i said do a drain and fill every other oil change as oposed to a full flush every 3/36000 miles. Its just easier for what may be heavier then normal use. Though i often wonder how people in San Fran make out with clutches, brakes and Auto tranny wear. nipper
  3. it just depends upon how it is worn. All the answera you seek grashopper will be revealed when you remove the old bearing.
  4. No thats why you have a torque converter, it multiples torque. the only thing you may want to do is maybe add a drain and fill to your oil chnage ritual. Every other oil change do a drain and fill of the transmission, that keeps the fluid refreshed. As far as your hill holder, it most likely needs to be adjusted. http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/BasicsEWAug07.pdf
  5. YOu need to get all the moistur eout of the AC system. You have to read up on how AC works and to get a better understanding of what to do, otherwise your just going to throw money away. Also not being able to pull down a vac will tell you if there is a leak in the system or not. Your system is not "empty" its just at atmospheric pressure. nipper
  6. Out of curisoity i did a google on CVT issues. Honda may have a hiccup in their CVT hybrids but thats about it. Surprisingly aside from drivers whining about it not downshifting (they have no gears so they dont downshift) which is mostly an issue with people not understanding the dynamics, they seem to be holding up. Nissan Toyota Honda Ford Audi (which i did not know about) Jeep and BMW seem to be holding up well. there are a few horror stories out there from Audi and BMW, but hell, my sister had a BMW that went through a auto tranny once a year, so i chock that up to the MFg and not the transmission. nipper
  7. Easy. Crash standards have increased. More air bags require a stronger structure. We have gotten fatter. We have gotten more "stuff" that we need to drag along for our darling children wherever we go. We also demand more "stuff" be incorporated into our cars. We also insist on safer quieter cars. Thats what happened to the small red wagon. nipper PS: The new one is smaller then the 2009 and in the same weight class and costs less as you gte upscale then a 2009.
  8. No need to you are correct, but that can also be the exhaust system if it is hanging down. nipper
  9. I would take a lump of it and just try things around the house. Start with gasoline and work from there. be careful as this is a chemical reaction and can give off bad fumes. nipper
  10. http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/StepEWAug07.pdf How to do it in your driveway, as opposed to previous postings that showed it from the dealer/tech point of view. nipper
  11. That quote is directly from endwrench, as i just checked myself. Remember there is more then one way to be an interfernce engine, in this case they mean the valves are not going to hit eachother. nipper
  12. Yes there is a glimmer of hope, well more then a glimmer. Replace the TB, tensioner, idler, waterpump, cam seals, main seal and re-seal the waterpump. You will be good to go untill you break the next belt. nipper
  13. I would say replace all 4. I had a blown one in the front but it always passed the bounce test. I would bet they are all original and very very tired. How many miles on this car? nipper
  14. 1996 you probably need all 4 struts. Bounce on each corner of the car, it should stop in 1.5 bounces. nipper
  15. Do a search here on 2010 there is already a long indepth discussion on it. It will give you more info. I saw one in person it isnt that ugly looking. Digital pics suck sometimes as opposed to film and dont do it justice. nipper
  16. Recirc doesn wok in any defrost mode. you have a loose electrical connector in the back of the control unit, easily fixed. The bulbs, do a search here on HVAC bulbs and you will find out how to replace them. nipper
  17. Then you didnt look hard enough http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/30/2010-subura-outback-priced-from-22-995/ Subaru's all-new 2010 Outback "Sport Utility Wagon" is arriving with a base price of $22,995 (*add $695 to all of the prices for destination and delivery), the same dollar amount that was adhered to the window of the outgoing 2009 model. The standard model is fitted with a revised 2.5-liter normally-aspirated flat-four rated at 170 hp and mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The stick shift can be swapped for Subaru's new Lineartronic CVT, but it will bump the base price up to $23,995. Though i may suspect thats why you can get a good deal on a 2009. nipper
  18. Every single bolt in a car has a torque value, that doesnt mean that you should use a torque wrench on everything. Just make sure they are tight enough that they wont fall off the car. nipper
  19. It's a valid diagnoses. Just get a used one from a junkyard. He is prbbly balking at it due to the cost of replacement at the dealer. nipper
  20. Walk into the service departments of each. If anyone is waiting for thier car, ask them how they like the service. And yes it can vary that much. The 1st dealer is just trying to get what he can get out of you.
  21. Something like this.... http://jalopnik.com/5225023/garage-mechanic-ghetto+rigs-subaru-impreza-with-eaton-supercharger nipper
  22. This is an electrical unit. This is a good time to replace the bulbs as the unit is going to have to come out. Its possible that this is as simple as a loose electrical connector on the back of the control panel. It happens. nipper
  23. SO does that mean we may have our very first tribecca off roading?
