  1. There is actually a proposal infront of congress and the NHTSA by the association of blind people, complaining that hybrids are TOO quiet (and electrics) and therefor a hazard to blind people. The "automotive industry is working on a solution" Just cant make people happy. nipper
  2. The problem is that this seal shrinks. Additives are meant to swell seals that are the proper side to begin with. i look at it this way, when you have tried everything else, you are staring down the barrel of a major repair bill, a little additive can't make it worse. At best it will avoid the inevetable, at worst nothing will happen. nipper
  3. and as long as your there you may look into replacing the struts. This is one of those jobs that tend to snowball a bit.. nipper
  4. I have been told that this is repairable, and a 600.00 repair. That was on the outback board, but maybe that guys shop is the only person i have ever heard of fixing it. There is also a related thread on here about it. nipper
  5. I have been asked if this is an all day affair, aprox amitly how many hours (i'm not asking, someone else is). Personally i have nothing to do on a saturday
  6. There is always someone that has to make life hard for the rest of us.... nipper
  7. Well if anything, a differential is a big tough peice or metal. Its the main pinon gear that tends to take the beating. They usually die long painful deaths (noisey) when the bearings are in good shape, but for instance, they run out of lube. Now the bearings are what keep everything true. THats why its hard to predict whats going to go on. I dont think youll get much warning when it finally does let go aside from maybe a bang, or some gear grinding noise. It may be quiter in reverse then forward. nipper.
  8. Well if hes asking, technuically they have already failed. I think the better question is something along the lines of "how long before the differntial falls out of the car", or "chews itself up into isty bitsy bits".
  9. Hard to say. As they chew themselves up, more metal gets in the oil, then they chew themselves up some more. I wouldnt go on any long trips. nipper
  10. Everyone is forgetting one thing. Brakes are no longer front/rear. They are left front/right rear and right front/left rear. Rear brakes dont fade. You get fading from front brakes getting hot. YOu may want to go to ceramic pads, as i think the brakes are a little less effective on that year then other years. Brake flushing. Use a baster to get all the old fluid out of the Master, then put fresh fluid on top of it. Don't reuse fluid. Use speed bleaders if you can. nipper
  11. rut-roh There is an internal seal that goes bad. Someone on the outback list said it can be replaced without doing a rebuild, i am looking into it. nipper
  12. I thought i explained how things worked.... but a long thread who knows. What i will tell you is expect that the tranny wont last for the life of the car with just home grown paddles. Youll be bypassing everything that gives the tranny long life. google endwrench transmissions and read up on it there. good luck nipper
  13. This is really old thinking. Ford and GM quality are way up, they just have to shake the bad rep they have. Ford and GM have many more cars that get better gas mileage then subaru does presently. SUbaru right now is at an advantage, as they absorb people dropping big SUV's for subarus. Eventually if gas keeps going up, they wiill loose out to other cars that get better mileage. After all we all know, very few people actually need or use thier 4wd/awd in those SUV's. Subaru will need a 2wd car to stay competative. RWD is more controlable in a skid then FWD (if your not used to it and 90% of the popultaion dont have driving skills past turn key). Also with costs going up, they need a cheap car. Its bad enough people are walking away from houses, and now starting to walk away from car loans. One thing they can't walk away from is food (just had a thought, maybe high food prices will end the obescity crises). People will need cheap cars with good gas mileage. Now is the time for them to jump in the frey, instead of playing catch up like chrysler will have too (ford and GM have cars ready to sell if the market demands it). I tried finding a report that was easily readable, but they arent. Everyones CAFE rating has dropped since 2003 (including subaru from 33 to 29), and thats what has to change. For now on in, yes, its all about gas mileage and survival. If Chrysler doesnt change thier attitude, they are doomed. Even Aston Martin, Rolls,, high end cars you would think that are immune from it, are trying thier best to raise thier CAFE ratings. nipper
  14. Well with gas mileage becoming peoples top concern, its not pissing it away. Remeber they are a small company, and can not afford not too have a small car thats effecient on fuel. Also they started out as 2wd, so they arent pissing it all away. Now if they got rid of thier engine, then yes. nipper
  15. Not that a dealer would ever do this, but are you sure they were OE sensors? nipper
  16. If the engine is running too rich, or if it is burning oil, it may be fouling o2 sensors. It may have a vacume leak someplace, or an exhaust leak no one can find. I still think its a no brainer Has it been passing emission tests? nipper
  17. 90/10varied through to 50/50. It never locks the plates. It pulses them so that the torque bind is constantly released. Ther duration of the pulse is controled by the computer, and the pressure by an internal spool valve. There are also 5 other solenoids in the transmission Don't go to a tranny shop, for the love of all things holy. They will have your tranny apart for diagnoses before you know what hit you (like a 2500 plus repair bill). Go to subaru of at all possible. They dont want to sell you a tranny, just fix the problem. Subaru tranny is the only time i will tell someone to go to a dealer. nipper
  18. OMG I THINK I LOVE YOU hehehehe i love corvairs, I'ce owned them. I have been fiddling on paper putting a sooby 4 cylinder into a corvair. I just dont want to fuin the lines of the car with a radiator. I really miss my vair (1967) nipper
  19. http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Subaru-Concepts/232133/# It may the new "cheap" sooby after all nipper
  20. Replace. There are no rebuild kist for the backyard mechanic. To many possible things that can go way too wrong if not done correctly, too many special tools needed, and that odd attraction the car develops to trees. Find a rebuilt or a used one. nipper
