  1. go with name brand pipes. It is an easy job so you can do it yourself. i always used walker pipes as they last a long time. Buy cheap pipes and you will be doing this again in a year or two. nipper
  2. if you feel jerkyness in low speed tight corners thats the sighn its going bad. If its an autopmatic get the tranny flushed it will love you. nipper
  3. i love my 1997 and will throw a new engine or tranny in or both when it comes time. The 1997 feels better and looks better then the 2006. As long as the noise goes away your fine. Mine sounds like a deisel on a very cold day. nipper
  4. do a search here. Your park interlock system is having issues or your ignition switch interlock solenoid thingy on the shifter is having isuues. Will it shift with the override?. When you press the brake pedal and the button you should here a relay click. if not then check the brake light switch and the interlock relay
  5. what he said. also at low speed the sound may drive you nuts. The vibration is from the extreemly aggressive tread pattern. nipper
  6. not that i truly understand wht your trying to do, but cant you do that through the valve stem. In all my knowledge of balancing, and the history of car repair going ack to about 1900, i have never heard of this... nipper
  7. the car has a speed limiter on it. I'm not going for the faster spedo, im going for the reverse white face. nipper
  8. Ok folks, as we all know if you have anything newere then a 1996 legacy you cant get reversable faces. Sp i decided to see why not. I have a 1997 OBW with a 120 mph spedo. The 1996 Reverse face is a 140 mph. First the good news, the dash panels are almost identical. The bad news. The 1996 has a 3 prong connector for speed (which i am assuming is two wires). The 1997 has a 5 prong connector with only two wires. If you put the 1996 spedo on the 1997 board, the spedo is way off, and its not incrimental. I still feel if you put the 1996 board in the 1997 dash, or even just do a complete swap you will be fine. The problem is that connector. Now if somone can dig me up that pigtail, i would love to try this again. Also the odometer is easy to reset (scary) it just takes a little patience to do. nipper:banana:
  9. There are some things that just arent worht doing yourself, this is one of them. Even to do it manually requires a special bead breaking tool. Doing this manually can be dangerous with the worng tools, so go and pay for it. Not to mention they should be rebalanced when the tires are re mounted. nipper
  10. you really cant compare cars 13 years apart. The 2006 forester weighs 3200 lbs. Yes the engine has more power but it does have differnt gearing, and your car since it is lighter will have a better hp/lb ratio. ALso 14 " wheels on your car as opposed to the larger 16" on the 2006,. Thaty ion itself will make a HUGE differnce in acceleration. i can go on and on and on. Your 93 legacy is 300 lbs lighter, has differn gearing, and only 30 less horsepower. www.cars101.com if you want to compare apples and oranges nipper It really is an unfair test as we can do this all day.
  11. One is a roling brick. Aerodynamics has a lot to do with performance. Forester has bad wheel bearings, and other things i do not like (like the interior). The new foresters i would possibly choose over a new outback. Unless subaru changes thier color palet and designs again, looks like im not going to get a new subaru, ill just throw the money into this one untill it rusts. The line has been lifted where "gee its not worth putting money into". looking at 25,000 cars, would rather throw a new drivetrain in ol blue, asits prettier, if that time ever came. then there is always the svx drool nipper
  12. i said my 1997 OBW was torquey with the 2.5L, personally i have a very very strong dislike for foresters. nipper
  13. My 1997 has 187,000 miles on it. The only major mechanical work was rebuilding the AWD unit (previous owner had a mismatched tire and that came back to haunt me even after i replaced all 4). i like the 2.5L personally, its torquey. As far as HG (ad nausim) once you get over 125K any aluminum engine can blow a HG. i had a 98 legacy, and love the extra height of the outback. The legacy kept hitting curb stops. nipper
  14. The front 02 sensor shuold always be an OE, the rear one can be any generic replacement. nipper
  15. Viscous coupling is sealed. The fluid can not be serviced. Causes for TB on a sooby are mis matched or under inflated tires. Tires need to be within 1/4" circumfrance of eachother. Once it shows its ugly head ona a manual nothing you can do about it. Do a search on Torque bind, there are hits on manuals and automatics, though more manuals are showing up now as they age. I know there are threads on manuals as i respond to almost all of them. nipper
  16. Could be one of two things, a loose heat sheild, or piston slap. Love a SUbaru, love your piston slap. This is one of those noises that we get used to owning a subaru. Do a search on piston slap. And welcome top Subaru, now should i tell you about the switch on top of the steering column or wait for you to find out on your own..... nipper

  18. Put the FWD fuse in under the hood and see if the sounds and vibration goes away. If it does..... Immediatly either replaced the worn tires, or place them both on the same side of the car untill you do. This difference in tire size will quickly destroy the AWD. If it doesnt let us know. nipper
  19. remember when cars had driveshafts ? well subarus still do. You have a couple of possabilities, the tranny mount or the universal joints in the driveshaft. nipper
  20. it is most likely the surface protection they use on the metal parts to prevent corosion after the car is made. It will fade with time. nipper

  22. Varies literally between individual cars and individual brands, weather conditions etc etc nipper
  23. the correction factor is for the differnce in ambiant temperiture and atmospheric preassure from the known standard used in the claculation. nipper
