  1. Age. 237000 thousand miles at 80K change intervals asuuming he changed them regulary, which i suspect he did not.. Its age pure and simple. nipper
  2. Its sealed, it would be the same thing as spilling you coffe or a coke on the seat. On the other hand, the seat foam and covering may not like it at all. nipper
  3. all i can think of is that there is lag when the awd engages. Put in the fuse and see if there is a differnce. SSee if you have lazy awd. I would do a tranny flush first, then wonder if one of the speed sensors is bad (or how ever the car says it needs awd). But really sometimes that is not a fair test. nipper
  4. If you want a car that wil operate and look as good in 200,000 miles as it did brand new, get a subaru. The bodies seem to last for ever, and as long as you have a good body, the car is always worth fixing. COmpare a 200,000 sooby with a 200,000 mile toyota, and alot fo things on the toypta will not have faired as well, or would have been replaced. where as all the subaruparts will be where the factory put them. You rarely read about broken switches, turn signals, door latches or trim peices falling off the car. Soony knows people drive thier cars for 250-300, 000 miles and they are built for that where they can. Other car manufactursers want you out by 100-150K and really dont care what happens to the car after 80K except for emisions. Thats why i buy subarus. Each one had over 250K when it died, and once by cancer, the others by crashes. Thats another thing, i am qute comfortable that the crash worthyness of a 300K mile subarru is as good as the day it left the factory. I can still get parts from subaru for a 20 year old car. I have never been told that part is no longer available. Not only can they run for ever, i can always get parts. SUbaru has one of the best resale prices on the market, where as othercars tend to tank with age. nipper
  5. Yes just take them apart when you yank them out. They are seperate units. For the cost of postage i even think i have a the filler pocket that goes in the place of the cd unit nipper
  6. The synchro people will fight you to the death for parts .... better watch your back nipper
  7. actually it sounds right ... like its working. Its not an instant full power to both axles. The computer figures out how much power is needed to get the car moving, then it moves. Sounds like it works to me. nipper
  8. could be that they are dying. Its easy enough to pull out the stero and check to see if there is power to it. If there is its dying. nipper
  9. Altenators get hot. Its a by product of producing electricity. NOw in my opnion, with winter coming.... if its an old alt, and you think the bearings are going, ild just go ahead an replace it. An alt will get over 200 degrees, so not to worry. nipper
  10. a clutch can last from 60K to 200K, it just really depends upon the drivers, terrane, and how the car is used. nipper
  11. I would replace them asap. All it takes is one overheating to strand you somepleace, or one really good overheating to bake the engine. It's always better to do repairs on your time schedual, as opposed to when the car demands it. Its only a matter of time before youdo real damage. As it is now, the more you drive it with oil in the antifreeze, the more likely you will clog the radiator and or heater core. nipper
  12. CLutch pedal check under the hood and look at the adjustment. If it is adjuste and shifts fine, go get another cable (you can always return it) and see if it is the proper cable. The cable should be replaced when the clutch is replaced. nipper
  13. Another thought ... tires. Generally Tires guarnteed for high miles are of a harder rubber. They offer less rolling reistance, but the trade off is in handling. this may not be an issue if you dont drive aggressivly. more sticky tires have softer rubber and less gas milage. Not alking a big number here but who knows. nipper
  14. I swear in the picture the entire front end of the car looks woodgrain nipper
  15. Changing the oil while cold you will never get all the old out of the car. Oil is thick when cold, and colder it is the thicker, leaving more old contaminated oil behind. Also instead of making it a 15 minutes job, it can now become an hour or so wating for the oil to stop driping. nipper
  16. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW ok i got that out of mey system. DId that paint come from a speed shop and is it a high perfromance engine paint Actually this seems to be coming up alot. If your looking for performance bolt ons for an outback, it doesnt happpen, unless youconsider a complete turbocharged engine a bolt on nipper
  17. we may have taken 100 miles off the clutch. This is why a freind of mine retrofitted a hill holder to his car. nipper
  18. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Traction+T%2FA+T&partnum=07TR5TTAT&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&place=0 This is waht i bought, good reviews, great buy for the monys, i ma very happy with them nipper
  19. Drive it? usually will tell you if it goes or not. The problem is with the electormagnetic clutch from what i understand, not the tranny itself. nipper
  20. I bought BF goodrich .... from tirerack.com they were the best buy for the money, and reviewed really well. Sometimes its better to cheap cheap tires with plenty of tread, vs expensive tires that are down to the treadwear indicators. nipper
