Well, I went to go take a look at the coupe. I bought it instantly. The interior is immaculate, the exterior is darn near immaculate... It ticked for the 15 minute drive to AutoZone to buy some of my favorite stuff (MMO) and threw it on in there... and it hasnt ticked anymore... i'm going to tune it up next week, it needs it bad. oh yeah, and the 3AT "kicks" a bit... and CEL is on. Havent checked the codes, but at the moment it seems ok even with it on there. So... I'm on the road in a VERY nice Subie for less than half of a paycheck! Thank you Jon for hooking me up, and thanks Richard for not buying it.. haha

if you pushed a ground wire into the metal, it wouldnt do anything at all. it was probably a hot wire (i dont remember the colors off hand) check the fuses under the dash. it's one of those... i dont think the radio wires bother the fusible links... ive blown the fuses millions of times, but it never blew a link...

93 loyale with only 70k upkeep q's
misledxcracker replied to mattri's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
id replace the cam seals and the crank seal too, while you have everything apart in the front. -
Just got an '89 xt6, 2wd auto, 100,500 miles. It loses around a quart of oil a day... After driving it for 15 minutes, it smokes horribly under the car... Assuming its oil hitting the exhaust. Anyways, I cleaned up under the car and the oil looks like its coming from the front somewhere... I was told by previous owner that it was the oil pan... Doesn't look like it. He said it loses a lot of oil... He wasn't kidding... Any ideas where to start checking? And where can I get that o-ring for the water pump? The one where the metal radiator hose goes into the water pump... It leaks there. What do I do? Thanks!

need help with transmission
misledxcracker replied to olehippy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does the speedometer move at all when you have it in Drive? If so, its something with the axle. I've spun out a hub before with an AT, it doesnt move for nothing, and it will SAY its going 55, but its not :-p And if you did spin out the hub or axle splines, it may not make noise at all... Mine didnt. If your modulator went out, it'd still move... it'd slip slightly, and it would most likely blow massive amounts of white smoke out of the tailpipe.. (burning your ATF out the exhaust) Governor or other transmission problems, no clue... Never had either one of those problems... Good luck! -
yep, the GM crank removal tool works too.

high odometer = high mpg!?!?
misledxcracker replied to heartless's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm taking it that yours is a 5-speed... and even then... good MPG! Your theory may be right... my old '86 had only 90k on it and must have got 20mpg... heh heh maybe i should have kept it and drove it more :-\ -
Air Bags, not Air Suspension ones. . .
misledxcracker replied to KNIGHTRIDER's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
None of the 80's subarus ive seen have air bags... ea series, that is. I know the SVX has air bags (had a steering wheel from one on my '86) never got the airbag working though, I prefer not to have them anyway. To add an airbag, I think you need sensors of some sort.. I'll leave it to someone more experienced to answer that question. Legacy, Impreza, SVX... all the newer ones should have airbags. Well, a good portion of 'em at least if not all. -
Crank/no start- HELP!!!!!
misledxcracker replied to SLCGL87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
to drain the gas... i usually just plug in the diagnostic connectors, disconnect the line from the fuel filter, and use a long hose to transfer the gas from the line to a gas can on the floor... turn the key to the ON position, and let the pump work it's magic. but it has to be watched closely... because the fuel pump pumping after all the fuel is out, can make the fuel pump really mad! once its done, turn the car off, and there it is. i second the disty idea... and checking codes. -
Crank/no start- HELP!!!!!
misledxcracker replied to SLCGL87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For one, get rid of that gas! Replace the fuel filter, too. If the fuel pump is buzzing every few seconds like that, its most likely that the diagnostic connectors are plugged in. Check those, if plugged into each other, unplug 'em. They're green one-wire connectors, under the driver's side dash. Try starting the car now. Oddly, my 86 didnt start when they were plugged in... Actually... find the connectors, and if they're connected, cool, if not, connect them, and check the ECU codes. If, for example, the crank angle sensor was shot in the disty... the car wouldnt start. There's a writeup on how to check the codes... I totally forgot the exacts on how to do it..... but then if the ECU's telling you something's broken that would cause the car not to start... there it is. Um... well if none of that works, I'll try to think of more stuff... -
Whoo hoo, ticking and leaking now too!
misledxcracker replied to misledxcracker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ea82, fuel injected... and yes, where the motor and trans meet, there's what seems to be a crack in the metal, allowing oil to come out of the SIDE of the housing, not the bottom. its dripping from the front of the engine, if it were the rear main, wouldnt it leak out the back on the bottom? -

Someone's gotta know whats up here, especially on my flywheel housing leaking... -
I dont know if this is bad for the car, but this is what I did to drain the old fuel out of my car when I bought it... Disconnected the fuel line from the back of the fuel filter, led the hose to a jug, plugged in the greens, put the key in the ON position. Once no more gas came out, I immediately turned the key to OFF, replaced and reconnected the fuel filter, put in a few gallons of fresh fuel, added half a bottle of injector cleaner, and it started up. Again, like I said, I dont know if it's bad for the car, I'm just telling ya what I did.

Long one here, sorry!! Well, I drove the GL to work today (20 miles) and was... well, quiet enough. After work, I get in, start 'er up, and I mean, the car sounded terrible, like a sewing machine with a disposition! So... I buy some Rislone, the blue stuff, I'm a quart or so low, so I throw it in there, and drive it around 40 miles...gave it a hardcore Italian special (3AT tranny going 90 works, right? ) Still making that horrible noise! I look under the car, I'm leaking somewhere that's dropping it onto the oil filter and that area, about 6 different places it's dripping... The exhaust, I believe it's the cat, is smoking, I'm guessing from the oil thats leaking being blown back there by the wind? AND... big problem! I'm leaking somewhere on the flywheel housing! Like, a crack somewhere on the flywheel housing leaking some sort of oil... Damn it. So I drove her back home, ticking like mad, got pulled over by a cop and was asked "why the heck is that thing so loud?!".... and now here at home I am. Now... heres the low-down: - I get around 45 PSI oil.p at cold startup idle, and it wont even hit 45 when warm, even going a steady 75 on the 3AT, and we all know those things rev high. I get around maybe 5-6 PSI per 1,000 rpm's, if my math skills are working.. - The tick... It goes away, say when I'm doing 50, cruising, it'll die down somewhat, then dang, loud again... It sounds like a sewing machine mixed with someone tapping their fingernails on a metal table... - The flywheel housing leak... It just started, after I pulled an Italian on it tonight. It's not a horrible leak, but what the heck would cause it to leak?? It's in the "crack" of the housing, in the middle I guess you could say. And it's dark fluid... not transmission fluid at all. I'm taking a wild stab at it and I think it's the oil pump seals going south... Because it did quiet down quite a bit after my oil change, then started the tick with the leak near where, I believe the pump is. And it 'freakin shoots oil all over the place under that hood! Can we try to figure this one out... long road trip planned! -Gary

top of the motor... heater hoses, upper radiator hose, thermostat housing, radiator itself? That's all I can think of...

They sell those here in Arizona, at Big-O Tires. Around $28 a rim, if I remember right.

Personally, I use 10w30 in cars that dont burn or leak oil... But if it does, try 10w40. Also, if the Soob has the Tick Of Death (lifter tick) a quart of MMO is a small investment to add to your oil.

Within 3 months, I'll have a lifted '88 DL wagon, I'm by Bullhead/Laughlin though.
